Re: 2023 MLB Regular Season
One of my favorite annual traditions in the Swamp is when Eric Davis’s name comes up and everyone is like “man, that guy was fucking good.”
My avatar corresponds on my place in the Swamp posting list with the all-time Home Run list. Number 45 is Paul Konerko with 439.

Re: 2023 MLB Regular Season
This is so great to see.
And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.
Re: 2023 MLB Regular Season
Even my love/lust for Grady Sizemore couldn’t displace Davis from the top spot on Guys I’d Like To See Get a Restart.
Re: 2023 MLB Regular Season
Never heard of him. All kidding aside, I didn't really watch much baseball during that time.
To quote both Bruce Prichard and Tony Schiavone, "Fuck Duff Meltzer."
Re: 2023 MLB Regular Season
Now I'm thinking about this again. 1987 Davis was a 25 year old CF, one of only two to reach 30 HR and 50 SB (Bonds the other) and his slash was just a tick below .300/.400/.600. If he had anything close to a standard career arc, his floor was 1st ballot HoF.
Re: 2023 MLB Regular Season
And his ceiling would be Willie Mays, II. I'm firmly convinced of that.mister d wrote: ↑Thu Jun 08, 2023 10:11 amNow I'm thinking about this again. 1987 Davis was a 25 year old CF, one of only two to reach 30 HR and 50 SB (Bonds the other) and his slash was just a tick below .300/.400/.600. Re: 2023 MLB Regular Season
After a year and a half of sorting it out - the Eric Davis from Opening Day 1986 until he ran full speed into the brick wall at Wrigley in August of 1987 was the best baseball player I have ever seen. And it is not really that close.mister d wrote: ↑Thu Jun 08, 2023 10:11 amNow I'm thinking about this again. 1987 Davis was a 25 year old CF, one of only two to reach 30 HR and 50 SB (Bonds the other) and his slash was just a tick below .300/.400/.600. I know I've put these stats in here before, but I am gonna do it again (call it early cranky old man privilege) -
1986 .277/.378/.523 - .901 OPS 27 HR 80 SB ---- EIGHTY STOLEN BASES
1987 .293/.399/.593 - .993 OPS 37 HR 50 SB --- if he doesn't run into the bricks and play Sept. hurt he goes 40/50
1988 .273/.363/.489 - . .852 OPS 26 HR 35 SB
1989 .281/.367/.541 - .908 OPS 34 HR 21 SB
1990 .260/.347/.486 - .833 OPS 24 HR 21 SB
He only played in 132, 129, 135, 131 and 127 games in those five years and still averaged .276/.370/.526 29 HR 41 SB - that's a five year run unlike most anyone outside of early Mike Trout and...again, from opening day '86 to the wall incident in August of 1987 I still haven't seen that matched. Oh, and played a defensive CF like a prime Griffey Jr....
Thank you for allowing me yet another Eric Davis interlude...

Hey, enough about Eric Davis, what about Kal Daniels, who hit like Lou Gehrig for a few seasons before fading?

Between 1984 - 1988 the Reds farm churned out Eric Davis, Kal Daniels, Paul O'Neill, Barry Larkin, Chris Sabo, Rob Dibble, and Tom Browning. And others who had decent major league careers - Kurt Stillwell, Jeff Treadway, Tracy Jones, Joe Oliver, among others.

What happened to the Reds in every year except 1990? 89 and 91 especially. The 1990 season should have been the norm instead of a one-off.tennbengal wrote: ↑Thu Jun 08, 2023 12:06 pmgod he could hit.Johnny Carwash wrote: ↑Thu Jun 08, 2023 10:53 am Hey, enough about Eric Davis, what about Kal Daniels, who hit like Lou Gehrig for a few seasons before fading?

Re: 2023 MLB Regular Season
They were second in 85 - 88 to some pretty damn good Dodgers team primarily - those were the years of one division winner and no wild cards. 1989 was a shitshow as the Pete Rose betting thing broke and ruined most of that seaosn.degenerasian wrote: ↑Thu Jun 08, 2023 12:16 pmWhat happened to the Reds in every year except 1990? 89 and 91 especially. 1991 they started to transition to the next versions of that team. Davis was already on injury decline, etc.

This plus Tom Browning was one of the most under-appreciated workhorses in the game. Add in 88-90 Danny Jackson before he got hurt made for one heck of a rotation.

Gunnar Henderson deposited an absolute no-doubt, 462 foot HR onto Eutaw Street (one hopped off the warehouse) this afternoon. That swing looked like Junior's back in the day.
The kid's been tearing the cover off the ball this past month.
O's win 11-3 to sweep the Royals.
41-24 on the year to remain 5.5 games behind Tampa Bay.

Re: 2023 MLB Regular Season
Turns out, that shot by Henderson may have been the longest HR ever hit to RF in OPCY. Five HRs traveled farther in the history of OPCY, but all were hit to LF & LF-CF.
If you've ever been to OPCY - Gunnar will have the furthest ball plaque out on Eutaw St.

Later, he scored the go-ahead run in the 8th on a ground ball to a drawn in infield…

Yeah I went searching for longest hit HRs at OPCY and found this.bfj wrote: ↑Sun Jun 11, 2023 5:25 pmrulesEnochRoot wrote: ↑Sun Jun 11, 2023 3:14 pm Gunnar Henderson deposited an absolute no-doubt, 462 foot HR onto Eutaw Street (one hopped off the warehouse) this afternoon. I don't think there's been a ball hit further than 462 to RF at OPCY this season (that link is from February of this year).

Over the past week, Oakland increased its season’s win total by over 40%. (5 game win streak).

I was at my cousin's eldest's graduation party Saturday. I was involved in three separate conversations with Reds fans while there about him, specifically the last row home run and triple mentioned upthread in all three.tennbengal wrote: ↑Sun Jun 11, 2023 5:11 pm An absolute monster HR from Gunner.

Re: 2023 MLB Regular Season
In this night in Reds baseball , due to Sims and Diaz being unavailable, and the game in extras and the reds up 5-4 they handed the ball to a rookie making his big league debut who is up due to attrition and a 7+ ERA in Louisville with a fastball he can’t control and a slider and this was his zone chart
And somehow that translated to him getting the save.

Curt Casali, reds catcher, did some matrix-level shit to stop literally half a dozen pitches from getting to the backstop with the tying run at third.

34 BB in 22 innings at AAA - and then unleashed a live “holy shit” in the on-field post game interview. I love him.

Re: 2023 MLB Regular Season
How is that pitch a strike that appears to be at a batter’s head you might ask as you peruse the majesty of that pitch zone chart?
Well, the royals manager asked one of the unfortunate royals to bunt against this real life Ricky vaughn/nuke laloosh combo as a fastball bored in toward his head and the bunt attempt was fouled off/kept the batter from being hospitalized….

Re: 2023 MLB Regular Season
You would line up a white AAA reliever from every team and tell me one of them has huge control issues and is named Ricky Karcher and I'm pretty sure I'd pick the right guy.

Re: 2023 MLB Regular Season
Someone did a supercut of every one of his glorious pitches last night - enjoy
21 pitches - only 9 strikes and one of those a batter pitch clock violation. NO strikes on his fastball.

I've literally never seen anything like it outside of the opening scenes of Bull Durham and Major League. After Casali makes his third unreal leaping stab of a fastball looking to bean a mascot, you can see him go into "fuck it I'm only calling sliders" mode...and it somehow worked.
I really did think that ball to Massey as he squared around was gonna kill him.

just within the last 2 weeks i've become glued to the Reds - although i keep adding "teams i like" to my MLB account, it's getting a little messy
but for real i want a Pirates/Reds division title race and it could happen
(but when is Joey coming back to singlehandedly/exponentially increase their awesomeness and average age)
