But he couldn’t stop the goalie from regressing.

Stole yes, maybe. Made the best of a situation he created by giving Tkachuk a bridge contract. He was lucky there were competing bids that drove the price up.

Extended Huberdeau way to soon without seeing how the players fit, because didn't want to be embarrassed again. Didn't want another Gaudreau and Tkachuk situation. How do you extend Huberdeau for 8 years 10.5 mil without ever seeing him play for you but you were too afraid to give Tkachuk a long term deal in 2019 after already drafting and seeing him for two years? Instead they extended other guys and signed bad FAs like Troy Brouwer and James Neal.

His asset management is just poor. At one point the Flames core was Gaudreau, Monahan, Giordano and Brodie. (These are actually the only 4 players my wife knows) He got nothing for any of them, in fact he had to give up a 1st round pick for Montreal to take Monahan.

Now maybe in a big market like Toronto, none of that matters.

I'm more optimistic about Treliving than you guys, but can you imagine if he's in charge when both Tkachuk and Matthews leave?

Alert the self-appointed fan police. Just bought a Stone home gold jersey with the SCF 2023 patch (which had only came into the store today and I didn’t even really care about but an extra $20 well spent.)

Nice! I've got the hat that matches it. I've only ever seen it for sale at the little VGK store in Park MGM near the indoor walkway to Aria.

Just saw this is the first time in Cup Finals history both teams’ leading scorer in the regular season was an American (Tkachuk and Eichel).

So Treliving leaves and Dubas gets fired because they both want more control. Treliving goes into the cauldron reporting to Shanahan and the 3-headed dragon where it's cup or bust. Dubas gets a big promotion into a probably rebuilding market, although Fenway does have money and Crosby/Malkin could have one more cup run in them. I think we know who came out much better.

Is it because retreads are considered safer? I feel like when a GM in any sport hires a retread and he doesn't work out, it's a lot easier to explain to the (likely mediocre) higher-ups that it was a sound choice based on the knowledge we had. But if you hire someone outside the norm and he fails, then you won't be able to get another GM job after you get the axe.

That's a false narrative. I found that Gaudreau absolutely excelled under Sutter. I think he even admitted that he plays better with strict authority behind the bench. He didn't leave Sutter and the Flames, his wife did.

Patrik Laine? We shall see…

Watching Game 1 at a local BWW because of superstition. VGK are 3-0 when I go there to watch with two eliminations.

Tonight, up 2-1 on the road, they tucked the Knights into bed, went downstairs, poured a rye whiskey, and made love to mamma. I haven't seen them do that in 5 years. (5 years ago they beat Vegas in game 1 then lost four in a row, so...)

Road teams about to be 6-2 in game 1. Hockey is random.
Here is where I have to point out VGK won Game 1 of the 2018 Finals.

There’s a lot of similarities between Vegas and Florida and another weird one is that both owners share the same alma mater (Army/West Point).

I enjoyed finding out in the article in the Athletic about the Blue Jackets and Babcock that the Blue Jackets were not able to come to terms with the Leafs on buying out the last month of Babcock's deal with them, even though they fired him in 2019.

Did not enjoy the pull quote from a podcast where Babcock sets up deniability for the bullying charges issued against him by multiple players.

Through 5 1/2 periods Florida is being outscored 4-3 by the two players it gave up during the 2017 expansion draft.

Need to thank Philly for taking him off TV after this season.

Also a lesser man than me would chuckle at the irony of Tkachuk trolling Eichel after G2 about skating in the middle of the ice and not having his head up then being hoisted on that petard by a (another, like Tkachuk’s) clean hit by Kolesar but I am not that man.

Something to watch is VGK has the 3rd best goal differential in the second period in playoff history. Numbers 1 & 2 are teams (don’t remember which) from the NYI and Edmonton dynasties).
