Hello, Music Fans...
May I impose on you for a favor?
Could any of you please recommend current/recent rock/alternative bands/artists with female vocalists, or, even better, comprise the whole band?
Our eldest (13) needs some help. I can make suggestions/provide examples to about the mid-2000's (L7, Veruca Salt, the Donnas were all mentioned, along with playing some Elastica when taking them on the quick car ride to a friend's house last night, and I have some more stuff from my era to pass along - Sundays, Juliana Hatfield, Tanya Donnelly/Belly), but would appreciate more suggestions for them.
Thank you.

Re: Hello, Music Fans...
Not terribly current, but The Breeders were a mostly female band. The drummer was male but that’s it.
I’d also recommend introducing your daughter to Kate Bush and her wonderful voice.

Everyone's favorite, Hole. That is about as recent as I can get.

Blondshell and Boy Genius are worth a listen.

The Beaches, although their subject matter may be a little mature for a 13 year old.
The Beths, my god the Beths. I love the Beths so much. Super wholesome and lovable Kiwis with a female lead singer.
Courtney Barnett is another down underer (Australia this time). Pretty rocking guitar music with witty lyrics.
Boygenius. Supergroup made up of Phoebe Bridges, Julien Baker, and Lucy Dacus (all excellent solo, Dacus is my favorite). Until this weekend's show where Phoebe and Lucy ripped off their shirts there was nothing objectionable for a parent of a 13 year old. They're all really great musicians and songwriters.

Echo what chedda said re: Courtney Barnett. She's one of my favorite artists. Like Lucinda Williams but with an aggressive, harder edge.

Garbage? Shirley Manson lead but I think the rest of the band is male. Her older sister was a guest at my wedding (which I am sure I have posted before).

If you just need bands fronted by women, add Metric and Chvrches.

Re: Hello, Music Fans...
a few:
1. if looking for some aggressive hard rock - try Dead Sara (impossible to play "Weatherman" at less than top volume)
2. really love Skye Wallace's debut album; great melodic rock from Toronto
3. a little more of a lush/melodic/electronic vibe - Goldfrapp
(although kick it old school for a sec and recommend The Pretenders debut album)

Bully...the project fronted by Alicia Bognanno, just released a new album that's been getting lots of plays on KEXP
Japanese Breakfast, the band of Michelle Zauner, is really good.

I'm just reading through this thread wondering how many of these bands are just random words you guys are throwing out. Woozy-Wuzzle, Starjam, Vanilla Sassafrass!

For something a bit more rhythmic - Hollie Cook has released a number of great mellow reggae/pop albums.

Re: Hello, Music Fans...
Not at all, the point of post was to get some groups DSafe wasn't aware of. A couple names like Darkher Myrker, Sincere Enginere, Phantogram... sounded made up, so it made me laugh thinking of one of these guys trolling by throwing a couple made up names.Gunpowder wrote: Mon Aug 21, 2023 11:37 amAnything that you've heard of would not be allowed to be recommended in a Swamp music thread, this is the first rule of the Swamp. The Sybian wrote: Mon Aug 21, 2023 11:15 am I'm just reading through this thread wondering how many of these bands are just random words you guys are throwing out. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that one of the things that might sink Wander Franco is the fact a bunch of underaged girls have dick pic text messages from him with metadata from earlier this season.

Don’t think I saw Alvvays on this list, 60% female including the lead. Warpaint is 100%. Yeah yeah yeahs I think is just Karen O but they’re one of those bands that only matter because of one member. Big Thief and Beach House likely fit that label too. School of Seven Bells were great (female lead).
Re: Hello, Music Fans...
Apologies if anyone has already mentioned Otoboke Beaver
