2023 MLB Postseason - Rangers vs.. wait... the Diamondbacks? Really?
Contrary to DeGen's last post, staggered start times are great. Do you complain about the first Thursday or Friday during March Madness.
With the Phillies-Fish getting the late slot all three games, I am very appreciative of the pitch clock leading to earlier bedtimes, instead of staying up past 1 am.

Staggered start times are great. But having each matchup played at the same time every game is bullshit. There's no reason why the AL games have to be during the day all three days, depriving their fans who can't watch during the day of the chance to see them at all.
And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.
Re: 2023 MLB Postseason - October is here
I just had a complete brain fart, even though I looked at the schedule last night and realized they were facing Miami. Carry on.

The Marlins have always been snakes as far as I'm concerned.

Re: 2023 MLB Postseason - October is here
I'm sure the AL matchups being boring as hell for general fans don't help. I assume if MLB could snap their fingers and swap out all the wild card teams for all the next 6 teams, they'd do it without blinking.

March Madness doesn't really have a choice, there's 16 games. And you're probably just watching a block of games, or the end of them, and it's great to have a bunch of buzzer beaters at the same time.L-Jam3 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 02, 2023 11:58 am Contrary to DeGen's last post, staggered start times are great. I see that discussion. Each league has one series in the Eastern time zone and one in the Central. It could've been Tampa at Noon, Minnesota at 3, Philly at 6, and Milwaukee at 8, and then on the other day switch the slots.Steve of phpBB wrote: ↑Mon Oct 02, 2023 12:07 pm Staggered start times are great. Teams would complain going from night game to day game. On a Saturday in July it's ok but not for a short series.L-Jam3 wrote: ↑Mon Oct 02, 2023 12:12 pmI see that discussion. So the first predictions I saw (CBS) have the O's going out to Tampa in all but one of the experts pick. Great that the O's had the best record in the AL but how many days off is good rest versus too many days.

But if the wildcard games this week were being hosted by the Yankees, Red Sox, Cardinals and Mets, somebody would still be playing at 1pm and 2:30pm and that's dumb.

Re: 2023 MLB Postseason - October is here
Teams play day games after night games all the time. Most Saturday games are at night and most Sunday games are during the day. Teams often play Tuesday night and Wednesday day. If a team starts a series at Wrigley on a Thursday, that game will be played at night and the next game will be Friday afternoon.mister d wrote: ↑Mon Oct 02, 2023 12:25 pmYup. Whatever minor affect changing times may have on the players pales in comparison to the unfairness to the fans.

Re: 2023 MLB Postseason - October is here
Yeah, no. Whatever is best for the team trying to win the World Series is more important than what time fans have to tune into the games. I'd be OK with that argument if we were talking moving all games to night games, but not switching up day/night games during the actual series.Steve of phpBB wrote: ↑Mon Oct 02, 2023 12:54 pm Whatever minor affect changing times may have on the players pales in comparison to the unfairness to the fans.

Re: 2023 MLB Postseason - October is here
I just want consistency. If the majority of games are played on weekday nights (Saturdays are split and Sundays are days) then the playoff schedule should be the same. Or just play all night games and avoid Sundays all together against NFL.
Something like this. (all night games, either at the same time or stagger east coast and west coast)
Wildcard - Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday
Divisional - Friday Saturday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday
League - Friday, Saturday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday
World Series - Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Monday, Tuesday.
Aside: My wife watches America's Got Talent. It's on every Tuesday at 8pm for two hours. Then the finale was 9pm for two hours, too late for her to watch the result of months of commitment. Or college football is played on Saturdays all season long. Then the championship game is on Monday.
This is just stupid tv stuff.

If this were true, why are they the only sport that does it? Imagine the NBA playoffs starting at noon on a Tuesday.

I like the staggering but I think there might not have been enough of it for the pitch clock era. We’re used to 4-hour playoff games. Now they might be over in 2 or 2 and a half?
Re: 2023 MLB Postseason - October is here
I have never seen such apathy and even irritation about a Toronto team in the playoffs. And that includes Leaf teams that made the playoffs with like 20 wins.

Re: 2023 MLB Postseason - October is here
i know none of us are THAT old but did people complain when every world series game was literally during weekday afternoons?
idk i do realize that i'm very lucky in that i can watch while i work (and will be watching literally every single game with multiple tvs); i love the staggered times and while as a fan i completely get that it'd be nice if say btwn games 1 and 2 teams could switch time slots - as has been pointed out above by smarter people than me - there's a very real-world effect on playing <24 hours later and i think in this short chaos series keeping it as consistent as possible keeps it as equitable for the teams as possible.
(although Rex that's an interesting point about this year's games being so quick...wondering if the stagger isn't enough? we'll find out soon i guess)

Well it doesn’t matter because unless we went to school on Memorial Day in 1986 for some reason, my memory of taking a tv into school to watch the Rockets/Celtics is very flawed.
I absolutely did that in 4th grade for game 5 of the ‘86 NLCS.

Maybe you were serving detention at night?
Re: 2023 MLB Postseason - October is here
I was a shitty kid, but we didn't start detention until 6th grade.
I 100% took the TV (it was like a 11' b&w) in at the end of 3rd grade and at the beginning of 4th grade. I remember Mrs. McMillan being a huge Rockets fan and clearly remember carrying that thing on the bus. But looking at the start times, we either had school that day for some reason or it was an earlier series.

Only two teams made the playoffs so it was an issue for a week. Plus it was more a radio sport back then with just the locals attending an afternoon game. Didn't seem to affect attendance, maybe it was a simpler time.MaxWebster wrote: ↑Mon Oct 02, 2023 6:48 pm i know none of us are THAT old but did people complain when every world series game was literally during weekday afternoons?

There could be some good stories. For example Berrios will go in Game 2 against his old team. I love his redemption story. He went through a lot last year and he’s fully earned the playoff start. It’s wild that, if we go to the next round, Kikuchi and Berrios both would start in the playoffs this year while Alek Manoah is doing god knows what right now. The Jays made the playoffs despite losing almost 7 wins above replacement from last season between Manoah and Guerrero.

I remember in '86 getting off the bus and hurrying up to my room to listen to the last inning of Mike Scott's no-hitter against the Giants to clinch the NL West. Then watching the news later that afternoon and seeing my best friends from down the street on celebrating on TV outside the Astrodome.sancarlos wrote: ↑Tue Oct 03, 2023 2:54 pm I remember a couple of us bringing old transistor radios with earpieces to school in 9th grade or so, to surreptitiously listen to the afternoon World Series game. And even still they thought it a good idea to build the new stadium on the same fucking footprint!
Also, whose idea was it to wear Devil Rays gear? Fire that person immediately. Even in 2008 they'd already given up the "Devil".
