I also hate that fake orange flavor in chocolate too. Other fruits I don't mind.
On Canadian chocolate: I bought a box of Coffee Crisp from Amazon. They're pretty good.

Lowkey, one of the biggest issues in my marriage right now is that when my oldest and I visited Pitt over the summer, I brought my wife home a Coffee Crisp bar (we stayed with my sister and they had a box of them because my BIL is from Buffalo and loves them) and she hasn't touched it. She loves coffee-flavored everything! And candy! I transported it most of the way across PA! TRY IT!

I think it's just a Buffalo thing. College friend who grew up in Buffalo was upset I never heard of them before. She got me some, and I wasn't impressed. I think she said it was an Easter thing, not sure if that was just a family tradition. She also thought it was a Polish thing, not a Buffalo thing.MaxWebster wrote: Fri Nov 03, 2023 6:16 am Ok, we're good again.

Feels like this is something I should have known about before going to Buffalo: Coffee Crisp is a chocolate bar made in Canada. It consists of alternating layers of vanilla wafer and a foamed coffee-flavoured soft candy, covered with a milk chocolate outer layer.

Nope. I don't like wafer covered in chocolate. It's mostly a texture/mouth-feel thing.
I wonder if the mint-chocolate thing is like how some folks taste soap when they eat cilantro?

Grandpa Joe's Candy Shop!
ha - yup last month we happened upon it while exploring the Strip District - fun store; I bought some Reggie! bars (cannot believe they made them - the orange glow from the box drew me in)
we're actually heading there tonight for parents' weekend, real quick turnaround - will watch Pitt get curbstomped by FSU tomorrow but supposed to be a nice day.
anyways yes - that candy store is awesome and i could see wandering back there tomorrow morning or postgame!

This was a HS friends trip that was originally supposed to center on the 2018 World Cup / 40th b-days but then they missed and covid happened etc etc so one guy was finally just like "we're going to Buffalo the weekend of the Giants game" and we did. Didn't really need recs since we were there to hang out versus be tourists and some others already knew a bit (but not enough to get dinner reservations for 12 ahead of time). Went to Banshee / some german place that couldn't seat us by the casino / southern tier the first night and then up and down Elmwood Ave the second.
How bad of an idea would trying to just go down to the tailgate area have been? It was debated but seemed like there was a huge chance of being stuck in traffic / stuck trying to get back later so we just stayed around where we were. Also one guy booked a 1 bathroom AirBNB on Berkshire Ave for 7 people.

Try living in the same town with him for 3 years and not meeting, just getting stalkery DMs telling you what you and your family wore to the street fair. Although I sent him a similar message asking about his car, as he pulled out of the bank as I pulled in, or stood behind his wife and kids in line at the ice cream place.

Re: Halloween Boo'ing
Oh, I'm definitely the problem. I've hated plans in general for most of my life and its been exacerbated by having kids stuff filling up the schedule so I default to no on a lot of other shit. Like this weekend we have a family party two hours away on Saturday and then the oldest has a tourney an hour away on Sunday and that's more or less ruined my brain because all I can think is "I don't have a free day for 1_ more days". Its a lame thing to whine about, I'm aware. And also I don't meet up with people who I can tell will some day yell at me for how I grieve celebrities.

ah that's cool - a) i wasn't busting on you (like A_B ... KIDDING!) and obviously i saw your post but i must have thought it was a theoretical
and b) i hate plans too for real.
LOL i just looked up Berkshire Ave - like legitimately 15-20 minute walk from where i live
yeah just going down to "the tailgate area" would have been madness. not necessarily not fun, but madness for like a mile radius out from the stadium.

They are having a pumpkin decorating contest at work, and just sent out all the entries for voting. Does anybody have any idea what this is in reference to?

I don't know if I'm feeling it this year for the "Adult Trick-or-Treats" and making up the big batch of margaritas to hand out to the grown-ups. Its supposed to be cold and rainy tonight, so a) not sure how many kids we will get, and b) not sure how excited people will be to get handed a cold drink in 45 degrees and pouring rain.
Thought about doing some kind of spiked hot apple cider instead, but couldn't find smallish "hot cups" to hand out.

I’m bummed, my daughter has an away game at 4:00, so we are missing Halloween this year. We’ll get back by 7:00, but it’ll just be stragglers and middle school kids at that point.

Do you guys still get the same amount of kids coming by? We used to get TONS of kids...but its not really recovered post-covid. The numbers have dropped way off.
Re: Halloween Boo'ing
We still get a ton of kids, but it’s definitely down from pre-Covid times.
A couple of my neighbors have said they’ve got Halloween fatigue and are just going to go dark tonight. The huge groups of people coming to our neighborhood from other places gets old.

Re: Halloween Boo'ing
Hard to say, we moved December 2019. Old hood was perfect for Halloween, as it was a large oval neighborhood with three rows of streets. People from other parts of town would drop kids off in our hood, and we’d get groups from urban neighborhoods. New house is on a street connecting better trick or treating neighborhoods, and our house is set back from the street. Little kids walk past unless we have a table by the street. Just hope my bowl doesn’t get pilfered too early in the evening.DaveInSeattle wrote: Thu Oct 31, 2024 11:18 am Do you guys still get the same amount of kids coming by? i never have any idea what to expect - our first year in the house in 2018 was such madness that i had to run out and get more candy by like 7pm (something at this point i would easily just shut the house down and hide in the basement for) but a few years we've had only 20 or so at the door. maybe it is a covid thing.
Right now just before 1pm it is 75º outside ... but we're supposed to get steady rain starting at 5pm. So either 200 kids or i'm eating a TON of reese's cups tonight. I know which one I'm rooting for.

Weather here is the hottest Halloween in over 50 years. That said, we are at the end of cul-de-sac and we've never really had big numbers. I expect around 20 kids or so.
Back when the kids were still young, we would host a 'hood party to start around 4 or so and then the moms would to go the Smith house (our best friends in the hood and their house is on the other end of the trick or treat zone) for the after party.
Dads would take the kids trick-or-treating and bring wagons for our beer and when the little ones got tuckered out.
Those parties were epic.

I don't know about 50 years, but it's hot as hell here too (currently 84 and muggy). Our neighborhood is insane. I bought $100 in candy and it won't last more than a couple hours. We've had two sets of really good friends move into the neighborhood in the past 2 years so we'll probably hang out with them and stroll a bit. There will definitely be people in the neighborhood with jello shots for the adults.Nonlinear FC wrote: Thu Oct 31, 2024 11:57 am Weather here is the hottest Halloween in over 50 years. We drag our fire table out front and hang in the driveway...usually a handful of neighbors who are not passing out candy will come hang with us. It usually ends up being a good time if it doesn't get too cold. Supposed to be in the 40's so we'll see what that brings in terms of adults hanging out and kids coming by.
I would like expensive whiskey.

I made jello shots last year, and they weren't as popular with the Adults, and I ended up with a bunch left over. I used to dress as Jesus every year, sit in a lawn chair in my driveway, tie a basket full of candy to a remote-controlled jeep and just drive it up to the kids as I saw them coming up the street. Now, all my neighbors have their lights off, so nobody bothers coming up my street. I think I got 15-20 kids last year.

Fun bonding moment with my youngest about plausible deniability today. She's going as Michael Myers but her school has a no-masks/weapons/blood policy so she could only wear the jumpsuit. I gave her a paint brush and told her to just say she's a house painter if anyone bothered to press the issue.
