Life, more affect than on ICEs. I don't remember the explanation for why. But maybe it's just a configuration thing. Obviously they wouldn't have built a semi without addressing range and towing capacity.brian wrote: Thu Dec 21, 2023 11:21 am Saw a Tesla semi truck heading into the Gigafactory outside Reno the other day. Yikes. I'm glad she's okay.Shirley wrote: Thu Dec 21, 2023 4:10 pmThanks. It was amazing, other than some bruises, she just had a broken finger that wasn't quite bad enough to go to the emergency room. The SUV took the damage for her. Luckily it hit her on the passenger side and I guess wasn't going as fast as it could have been. The whole process of dealing with their insurance, finding a new car, buying it, arranging the loan and insurance has been a major pain in the ass, but I'm pretty excited for the Tesla.Johnnie wrote: Thu Dec 21, 2023 11:37 am Holy shit, Dave. The autopilot is also probably way less likely to hit toddlers than cars that aren't using autopilot.

I've probably ranted about it before, but it drives me nuts when the media makes a huge deal out of a self-driving car getting into an accident. It's inevitable, but human error causes a shitton of accidents every day. Ultimately, self driving cars will save tons of lives and injuries, but there is something chilling about dying due to a self driving car malfunctioning than dying because a person wasn't paying attention behind the wheel.Steve of phpBB wrote: Wed Dec 27, 2023 1:27 pm

The reported repair time is 35 seconds... to attach the cover of the accelerator to the pedal so that it no longer slides out of place and gets caught in a seam of the car, locking the car in the fully accelerating position.

It just adds more proof that Elon is an idea guy with less clue than he thinks about how to implement for the long term. Really it looks like "hey, this is working, good job, you're all fired" is a real thought that goes through his mind. Just kinda stops when he's say, 60% of the way there because he saw something shiny or whatnot.Shirley wrote: Thu May 02, 2024 2:33 pmI really like the Rivian too.Nonlinear FC wrote: Wed May 01, 2024 11:33 am It's just so jarring and when you look at how cool/clean the lines are on the Rivian you really have to wonder WTF ppl are thinking.

I guess the way my brain has dealt with Tesla is that, as you've said (dave), that company was full of really brilliant, creative and innovative people before Elon came along. I'm not discounting his role in elevating/advancing the company, but to act like everything that has come out of Tesla is solely due to Elon's brilliance isn't close to accurate.
So... I would never give that company my money... but I do appreciate what the company has done to move EV's forward in a massive way.

I think that the great things that have come out of Tesla are attributable in large part to Musk’s arrogance, not his brilliance.Nonlinear FC wrote: Fri May 03, 2024 1:11 pm I guess the way my brain has dealt with Tesla is that, as you've said (dave), that company was full of really brilliant, creative and innovative people before Elon came along. Which was pretty damned important at the time, and if we manage to avoid the worst of global climate change, a lot of credit will have to go to Musk.
But he’s outlived his usefulness by now.

Followup on the tesla truck: There was one in my town last weekend and I nearly got hit in a crosswalk because a driver was looking at it parked on the street. He put up the "sorry / forgive me" hands, then pointed back at the truck and we both laughed.

Re: Electric Vehicles
If you replace cars reasonably often, have a place to charge, and won't ever really stress the range then an electric car is fine. My sister has a Tesla in Hawaii with a house to charge it at and garage to keep it in, that seems perfectly fine.
My issue is that most people usually keep their cars for 5-10 years, and with the exception of Teslas, we haven't really seen those cars hold up that long, and usually only with a battery replacement. Do people even keep Tesla's for 5+ years?
rental companies are also getting out of the electric car business at a macro level because it has been INCREDIBLY expensive for them to try and service them/there isn't enough supply of mechanics/shops/etc to work on them, which, for a single user may or may not be a huge deal if you buy the unit new with a warranty, but otherwise, seems pretty concerning.
A hybrid car will still likely run into issues, but unless something goes HORRIBLY wrong, it will still function as a gas car.
(big mad)
Also full self driving will absolutely kill you/your family, and your neighbors, so if you are stupid enough to use that shit you deserve what's coming to you.
Edit: The Hyper Truck is the ugliest piece of shit I have ever seen on this planet and I am generally pretty forgiving of most cars, even the Aztek was before its time and now is just kind of ugly.

Re: Electric Vehicles
There's an area in my neighborhood that's about 3.5 acres which would be perfect for a park/charging station for my town. (It's about 5 minutes off the highway too. So yes, it might spike traffic.)
However, since where I live is unincorporated and isn't a city with a true city government, the land is zoned for a business or corporation development. (If it was a city, tax dollars could buy it and then tax dollars could construct someone worthwhile.)
Does anybody know who I can call and rizz up at Electrify America or Tesla or whoever to buy that land and develop it?
I wish I was a philanthropic billionaire so I could do something for the community right now.
