Re: Random Politics
It’s sad that I don’t even know what specifically it is you’re referring to. First thought is the Ted Cruz tweet.

Re: Random Politics
So Republicans are going to start a civil war because a majority-conservative Supreme Court told Texas to stop putting up razor wire and drowning kids in the Rio Grande?

Re: Random Politics
Biden should do a short speech to inform Americans what happens if a state should opt to secede, including loss of federal tax funds, what happens to FDIC-insured bank accounts and mortgages, and so on.

Re: Random Politics
Biden isn’t mean spirited enough to show that a real FAFO would be to start showing photos of an incinerated Atlanta.

He should follow Eisenhower's example of the "Little Rock Nine":DSafetyGuy wrote: ↑Fri Jan 26, 2024 9:58 am Biden should do a short speech to inform Americans what happens if a state should opt to secede, including loss of federal tax funds, what happens to FDIC-insured bank accounts and mortgages, and so on.
When Governor Faubus ordered the Arkansas National Guard to surround Central High School to keep the nine students from entering the school, President Eisenhower ordered the 101st Airborne Division into Little Rock to insure the safety of the "Little Rock Nine" and that the rulings of the Supreme Court were upheld.

I don't think this is the hill they want to die on, but if it is, so be it. This isn't 1861 when most everyone who could vote in the South was in agreement slavery should stay legal.

I wanna see it just to see how fast Florida folds when the blockade sets in.
Hold on, I'm trying to see if Jack London ever gets this fire built or not.
Re: Random Politics
I was thinking of the Ike route as well. Really twist the knife pointing out Eisenhower was a (reluctant) Republican, and show America how far they’ve fallen.

Re: Random Politics
It's going to sound corny, but despite the fact that the National Guard's oath says it will obey the orders of the President and Governor of their state, all the President has to do is federally nationalize the whole damn bureau and the Civil War talk kinda goes away.

This does not absolve these governors from intimating that Civil War II: Electric Boogaloo should kick off because of a border crisis (and obviously being fueled my the multi-million dollar media corporations hoping it happens... For ratings!)
The threat of court martial of military members should be seen as great enough that anyone who tries to "defend their homes" will get prison time way quicker than your typical civilian or Orange Former Guy because the UCMJ is completely divorced and is its own separate justice system with much harsher penalties.
At least, this is my hope.

I'd like to get to the point where
(I do not want to hear anything about the rules working because some people who stormed fucking congress are getting up to 5 years in prison when the outgoing president who instigated the entire mess is legally running again and leading most (all?) polls head to head.)
This one (or cops) is kinda the tipping point of the whole "rules don't enforce themselves" problem.Johnnie wrote: ↑Fri Jan 26, 2024 11:18 amThe threat of court martial of military members should be seen as great enough that anyone who tries to "defend their homes" will get prison time way quicker than your typical civilian or Orange Former Guy because the UCMJ is completely divorced and is its own separate justice system with much harsher penalties.

Re: Random Politics
I can only really rely on the military culture I experienced for over 21 years to guide me on this.
When the Right Wing openly attacked the military as an institution what they're trying to do is sew doubt amongst their base that it's "gone woke" or whatever. From the inside looking out, it was a joke and isn't taken seriously.
So they know that the military won't just crumble and resign to bullies. They have to actively dismantle it the way they did with abortion. It would be easier to reelect Orange Julius Caesar then start CW:II.

Re: Random Politics
This does make me feel a little better, although maybe still curious if Trump were to install sycophantic military leaders, can the rank and file just go against them?
Re: Random Politics
So can we assume that the National Guard in Texas will listen to Biden and not to Abbott?

Re: Random Politics
I mean, that's my worry.
Michael Flynn could theoretically either get called back in to serve, given his 4th star, be nominated to something or just be nominated as SecDef while his brother, who is an active duty Army 4 star general already, could be nominated as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs or something.
Then you've kinda taken over the military from the top down instead of from public opinion and the bottom up.

Re: Random Politics
I will, personally, until I see otherwise. Once federalized there's no out for military members that disobey orders.
The layers of rank insulate it for me. What can a Governor offer to a general to go rogue, shitcan an entire career, turn Robert E. Lee/Benedict Arnold, and explicitly take up arms against...the rest of the military in America? And that includes active duty and reservists.
I mean, shit. Colonel Kurtz was at least in Cambodia when he was rogue.

Re: Random Politics
I think there are a large number of Republicans who fantasize regularly about a civil war where they can freely execute liberals. They don't really care what starts it. They just keep looking for the right spark.
Totally Kafkaesque

And that's why I'm a liberal with guns.

Re: Random Politics
So the whole 'Super Bowl is rigged so Swift can endorse Biden' thing.... she would be performing regardless of KC being in it. What am I missing here?

A traumatic brain injury, from the sound of that theory.

What do you mean? She's not performing at the Super Bowl is she?

Re: Random Politics
Oh shit she's not? My bad. I thought they think she was going to endorse Biden from the stage but I guess she could do the same from a suite •shrug•
