Alright, let me throw a curveball at you guys.

The good... Our new doggo is 7 months old. She is an absolutely adorable dog. She's pretty well-behaved, isn't super food forward (somewhat rare for a Golden) and does funny shit like try to carry 2-3 toys in her mouth at once.

My wife, who is one of those ppl that put up a front about not liking/loving pets put every time she thinks no one is looking she's giving them treats and loving on them. Well, with this dog, all bets are off, she absolutely adores her and is constantly researching things to make her life better and to train her.

The ONLY thing that sucks is that she HATES the car. Throws up every time and drools and more than that you know she's miserable. We are a car family... long road trips are part of the deal. We are told many dogs (specifically Goldens) grow out of this phase. Our issue is that even if she stops barfing, she is clearly terrified of the car now.

So, that's not great.

I’d suggest taking your dog on lots of fun short car trips that include treats, walks, and favorite destinations.

If she’s anything like our first dog, you just adapt the best you can, which meant no food for like 8-12 hours before a drive and dramamine. Still was never pleasant but less to clean up.

Our dog hates car rides when he's in the backseat. Similar results as you've described. However, my M-I-L has a 25 year old Jeep Grand Cherokee that has a fold-flat backseat. When our dog gets in the back of that Jeep - he's looking forward with the folks in the front seat. Lays down, facing forward, etc. No stress. No panting.

weird (and eventually good) update - had a crazy close call with mortality for me and River (the younger of my two labs) at our spot in the gunpowder river yesterday…took him and Ellie (my older yellow lab) to the usual area - the river was a little higher than normal but we’ve been there safely at that level before. A tree about five months ago had fallen partially blocking the swim area and I have been careful to avoid it when tossing their floats - especially when the river is up a bit. Anyway, I tossed the float farther than I intended and it swept swiftly toward the tree - River who was swimming toward it followed it and I couldn’t get him called back. The float went into the fallen tree where the water was fastest and River went after it and I saw him struggle to get turned around. Then, before I could react, he was pulled under and gone from sight and didn’t re-surface. Desperate and terrified I pulled shoes off and got to the spot - the water force was tremendous and I felt as best I could to see if he was stuck on some debris or otherwise trapped. Couldn’t feel him with hands or feet and then I got swept under. Mananged to grab a piece of the tree and get above water and then had the feeling of profound grief wash over me that he was gone and I had done it to him. Looked beyond the obstruction for Ellie (my yellow) and about 15 -20 yards downriver from the tree River all of a sudden surfaced from submerged swimming as normal. Hell, he even had the damn missing floatie in his mouth. Ellie escorted him back to shore and I dragged myself over. He seemed…fine? He was fine. We left and I went and got the two of them special treats and headed home. Checked online and learned generally dogs can go 30 seconds to a minute underwater holding their breath and labs up to 3 minutes. Huh. Never want to test that again. Still shaking really.

Watching her struggle to get back to the bank as she was being pulled away is something that I'll never be able to unsee. She flowed maybe fifty yards away from me before she drifted into part of a fallen tree. She got a foothold and struggled to the bank a way down. When I got to her she looked like she had just had a great time on a rollercoaster or something.

But this was three months after my heart attack and I was worried that another one was imminent.

One thing this confirmed that I suspected - those people that stay behind and die with their animals or refuse to leave their animals in natural disasters - yeah. I’m one of those. Confirmed. All I could think was the trust he had in me and I had let him down in the worst way possible. Would never leave these two behind anywhere.

Something happened to/with Biz Markie over the past week where he doesn't want to go in our backyard, is showing a much reduced desire for affection and is just generally skittish. He's deaf so he's always been a little prone to being surprised, but this is heightened. We can't point to a specific incident that kicked this off. And we've always crated him at night, but long ago fell into a pattern where sometime before 1AM he'd wake up and my wife would let him in the bed and he'd cuddle in against one or both of us. He's now either waiting until 4AM or 5AM or just staying the night in his crate. It's bringing me down, man.

At least he's still willing to go on walks and interact with his dog friends in the neighborhood.

He's not out there by himself that often, but maybe. Has to be something like that? A baby bird did basically jump into his mouth a month or so ago (he spit it out almost as quickly as he closed his mouth) but the timing doesn't line up, he was normal for weeks and weeks after that.
