Had people over with the brickyard in the background so I don’t even know who won. Thank god for Peacock for showing the replay on a relaxing Memorial Day morning on the patio with my pup and a
good cup of coffee.
good cup of coffee.

Indy 500 is the best sporting event I have ever attended as a fan. would highly recommend. was an amazing weekend (outside of covid wrecking our original group plans and L's massive travel fiasco)

I'm very late to this, but not seeing it posted here: https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/sports/ ... e/2886326/
For the first time ever, NASCAR is going to hold a city street race... In Chicago.
I found this in a very odd way, from a weird chicken puppet comedian I follow on TicToc who was (hilariously) predicting that this is going to be an absolute nightmare for Chicagoans; over the 4th of July weekend no-less.

Don’t know enough about F1 to know whether the start of a summer break is a good time to fire your sack your chief race strategist, but goddamn, they are really shooting themselves in the foot.

Can we get Bronto to explain to us less-NASCAR literate what exactly was going on with that? It was all over my twitter feed yesterday afternoon.
Re: VVVRROOOMM Auto Racing Thread (NASCAR, F1, etc)
The guy who put car into the wall and pedal to the metal had to get more points than Denny Hamlin to make the championship 4 (eligible for the series championship with the next race). So he went all in to get that last spot.DaveInSeattle wrote: Mon Oct 31, 2022 11:53 amCan we get Bronto to explain to us less-NASCAR literate what exactly was going on with that? Also like that his sponsor is The Moose FraternityHe is known for his last lap wall riding pass on Denny Hamlin, at Martinsville in 2022 to secure a spot in the Championship 4 race the following week at Phoenix. His maneuver is known as “Balls on the Wall”.[citation needed]
He is nicknamed The Watermelon Man, or simply Melon Man, due to his family's history as watermelon farmers, which he also participates in; whenever he celebrates race wins, he smashes a watermelon to the ground in Victory Lane.[2]

Re: VVVRROOOMM Auto Racing Thread (NASCAR, F1, etc)
the wall-riding move has worked for years in the EA Sports NASCAR games from the 2000s. but no one has ever tried it.
He was out of the final four on the last lap and needed to pass 2 cars (I think) to have a shot and wasn't going to pass them by racing "normally." So he tried the wall-riding move ... and ended up posting the fastest lap ever at Martinsville in the Cup Series.
it was incredible. and NASCAR has to somehow figure out how to prevent it from now on given how much faster he was than everyone else. Chastain ran nearly 2 seconds faster on his final lap than the race winner and that's just from doing what he did in the final corners. so now others will want to take that risk on the final lap at Martinsville and maybe even other tracks.
of course, it true funny NASCAR fashion, the move ultimately proved unnecessary too. the guy who finished fourth was disqualified after his car failed post-race inspection, so thanks to NASCAR's complicated points system, Chastain would have advanced to the final race with a title shot by simply staying in the spot he was in on the final lap before he rode the wall.

Re: VVVRROOOMM Auto Racing Thread (NASCAR, F1, etc)
So is the idea that you can use the wall to help you corner, so you just mash the pedal? And that help more than offsets the obvious friction and damage caused by the wall?
Totally Kafkaesque

Re: VVVRROOOMM Auto Racing Thread (NASCAR, F1, etc)
basically, yeah. Martinsville is so flat and the corner radius is so tight that you have to slow down a fair bit to make the corner. so by staying in the throttle and using the wall as your guide, you can go considerably faster.
it was surprising how much faster he was. the rigidity of this car helps a ton I think. there's a new car this year that's gotten a lot of (necessary) scrutiny because it doesn't absorb as much impact as the previous car did. multiple drivers have gotten concussions and missed races while others have said they are feeling wrecks more than they ever have this year. and while his car certainly looked beat up, it also wasn't obliterated

That is terrible. As is the headline writing:

There's a vital semi-colon or word missing there.

Got passed on I-40 through Texas panhandle by semis for three different IndyCar teams/drivers (ie three different cars). Looks like next race is Long Beach but not for a few weeks so can only guess they were heading to Indianapolis for testing?
