Re: CUBE LIFE! Office Etiquette
We had a DC gathering many moons ago and I barely remember who was at that thing.

Re: CUBE LIFE! Office Etiquette
it was Josie Woods.
first or second night of the tournament.
so who's coming to Houston next month?

I've met the following. Going in order that I remember meeting them:
Sabo
Brian
DSafe
Sancarlos
Rush
BFJ
Jerloma
El Flaco
AB
Johnnie
I may be missing one as I've added three to the list as I've typed this out. Should've met chedda, but he didn't call me when he was at the Katy Chuck-E-Cheese, and then I got COVID when I was supposed to meet him in Austin last year. Everyone has been awesome and can't wait to meet more of you in person.

I also should've met a gaggle of you guys at a USMNT game in Columbus many years back but things went sideways.

I remember you standing us up (it was me, AB and Sabo I believe) but in your defense I think you had a big crew (no pun intended) there you had to deal with.Nonlinear FC wrote: Thu Jul 25, 2024 9:38 am I also should've met a gaggle of you guys at a USMNT game in Columbus many years back but things went sideways.

Yeah that sounds right in terms of the group, and, yes... Hood to coast and bourbon chase pumped my numbers up. Golf outing as well ticked a couple of new names. Then a NJ swampup added two more (3, counting the weirdo in the car outside).

I'm not sure if this a work hack any of you have done, but I get so many questions in chat from people when I'm in the middle of a call that I'm actually an active participant in whether I use DND or it says "In a Meeting". I've found the only status in Teams that actually stops people from messaging you is "Presenting". So when I need some pure uninterrupted time to work on something, I send a meeting request to myself, join it, and then click present. It works EVERY TIME.

A few years back, on one of the scrum teams I was running we started a "Focus Friday", where I send out a day long meeting invite to every one to block their schedules so they wouldn't have any meeting invites for Friday. It worked really well...Giff wrote: Thu Jul 25, 2024 2:46 pm I'm not sure if this a work hack any of you have done, but I get so many questions in chat from people when I'm in the middle of a call that I'm actually an active participant in whether I use DND or it says "In a Meeting". Re: CUBE LIFE! Office Etiquette
Today is the start of my 7-biz-day PTO (going to the Olympics). That resulted in a glut of meetings yesterday. I'm not sure if I set a new record or not, but ... 13 separate Zoom call meetings ranging from about 9 am to 9:30 pm. It was pretty exhausting.
Totally Kafkaesque
Re: CUBE LIFE! Office Etiquette
i feel ya -- last year i was averaging 38 meetings a week (mostly on teams)..
better calendar control this year.
and my calendar/meeting hack
if its my meeting .. it starts at 5 minutes after the hour (or the half hour) no more, lets give every body a few minutes.. i gave you five minutes to get your shit together and be on time.. starting to see some adoption.

The guy who was wearing me out about 7-8 months ago, being a total pain, put in his notice and today is his last day. He never really talked to me after I reported him to HR for being a total asshole to people (myself included).

Yeah, it is. It leaves us in a bit of a spot, since he was really the only guy left who knows how the Data Analysis portion of one of our instruments works, but we'll figure that part out. Just not having to walk on egg shells around him is going to be great. The Sybian wrote: Fri Aug 16, 2024 12:38 pmGreat, that’s gotta be a weight off you and many others.DaveInSeattle wrote: Fri Aug 16, 2024 11:20 am The guy who was wearing me out about 7-8 months ago, being a total pain, put in his notice and today is his last day. Re: CUBE LIFE! Office Etiquette
I go into the office 3 days a week (MWF) and I always ride my bike. I generally get to the office about 7:30-7:45, and then head down to the locker room to shower and change.
For the last few months, without fail, when I get to the locker room, there is a security guard who has taken up residence in the one stall...and he's there pretty much the entire time I'm showering/shaving/getting dressed. Which...ok, whatever. But there are times when, ya know, I could really use that stall myself.
Do I complain? Say something?

Re: CUBE LIFE! Office Etiquette
You should absolutely narc on him. Anonymously, if necessary. You sometimes need that stall!

Re: CUBE LIFE! Office Etiquette
Absolutely not. I don't know the umbrella term, maybe "service jobs"(?), but you shouldn't complain about anyone working one of those unless there's actual danger involved.

Re: CUBE LIFE! Office Etiquette
Are offices with gyms/lockers/showers more of an urban thing? We have one downstairs (that only a select few can access) but I don't know that i've seen it many other places around here. May be the fact I've only worked one place in 1/4 century.

Re: CUBE LIFE! Office Etiquette
Are there other bathrooms you could take a shit in? If so, there's no reason to complain. And if there's not, no, you still don't formally complain, but you can bitch to your coworkers.DaveInSeattle wrote: Mon Aug 26, 2024 1:37 pm I go into the office 3 days a week (MWF) and I always ride my bike. I love dogs and I love seeing them just about anywhere but I couldn’t believe how many we saw inside Penn Station/Moynihan last night and I can’t believe how many are in this mall here today. When did this become a thing?mister d wrote: Tue Aug 01, 2023 4:06 pm Dogs that bark should not be treated like dogs that don’t. There was one in the Apple Store at the rich people mall and I was annoyed by it within about 15 seconds.

Re: CUBE LIFE! Office Etiquette
Barking dogs are like screaming/loud crying children. If you can't get them to quiet down within a reasonable amount of time, you need to leave the establishment. Even if it's just to try and calm them down and try again.
One of my two kids was a REALLY loud one and I wasn't going to subject other patrons to that, so I'd scoop her up and walk her outside. She would eventually calm down.
We also limited when/where we took her. Like... Never to a movie, ffs.
But, yeah, your yapping little dog isn't cute. It's fucking annoying.

probably just belongs in Rants2 Electric Bugaloo since I'm 100% WFH but my daily morning (online, obvs) standup meetings are so fucking stupid that today I realized - arrogantly, I fully admit - that these meetings are like being in HS detention or more-accurately the dumb kids' class. All stems from a (lack of) leadership problem, of course. Isn't it always.
I work 50-50 btwn 2 completely separate departments each day, and the difference between the two groups in responsibility, accountability, and intellectual curiousity is disturbingly stark.

Re: CUBE LIFE! Office Etiquette
This is probably discussed in another thread...but when did bringing your dog into a grocery store become a thing? Back when I had a dog, and I'd walk to the store, I'd always leave him leashed up outside. But now, it seems like everyone brings there dog (and not just little lap dogs) into the store.Nonlinear FC wrote: Sun Sep 01, 2024 4:22 pm But, yeah, your yapping little dog isn't cute. Re: CUBE LIFE! Office Etiquette
I think the proliferation of service dogs (animals) has blurred the lines on stuff like that. And the fact that (I believe) you aren't supposed to ask about the status of the dog makes things that much more difficult to suss out.
You can lead a horse to fish, but you can't fish out a horse.
