Former Cleveland RB and kick returner Ben Gay. Apparently, a car accident.
Re: Worthy of mention, too obscure for own thread
Yeah, I remember reading about him in the 1990s. Legend.

If only he had gone to Baylor 15 years later, he'd probably have won a Heisman!

Well this sucks.
My avatar corresponds on my place in the Swamp posting list with the all-time Home Run list. Tied with Mel Ott at Number 25 is Miguel Cabrera at 511.
Re: Worthy of mention, too obscure for own thread
Got four hits in his ML debut which I don’t think has been topped since? I’ll have to look that up. But what a hero to come out and try to help future MLers even if no one else has made the leap yet.

Kind of an odd coincidence that two guys who were players and executives at the almost same times had almost the same exact name. An uncommon name.

Three. He came out after Glenn Burke and then TJ House after them.

Burke was such a sad story.

Never saw that before. Love him. What was he arrested for? Just drunkenness?

I read an article, said he was a serial escapist from prison, didn’t see the original crimes. His family “gave him a final taste of red wine” by adding it to his IV drip before unplugging him.Jerloma wrote: Thu Aug 08, 2024 8:49 am Never saw that before. Love him. What was he arrested for? Charles R. Cross, Kurt Cobain And Jimi Hendrix Biographer, Dies At 67
Guy was a local legend..so influential for so many PNW bands.Veteran music journalist Charles R. Cross, who wrote best-selling biographies of Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain and Jimi Hendrix and founded the long-running Bruce Springsteen fan magazine Backstreets, died Aug. 9 of natural causes, per a statement from his family. He was 67.
During his 40-year-plus career, Cross was also the longtime editor Seattle music biweekly The Rocket and wrote nine books, including the 2012 Heart biography Kicking & Dreaming, which is being developed into an Amazon feature film directed by Sleater-Kinney’s Carrie Brownstein.
He is perhaps best-known for Heavier Than Heaven: The Biography of Kurt Cobain, which was a quick best-seller upon its 2002 release, and 2005’s Hendrix tome Room Full of Mirrors, which Vibe called one of the best music books of all time. Beyond his extensive chronicling of the Pacific Northwest music scene, Cross also wrote at length about Springsteen, Led Zeppelin, Bob Dylan and Sub Pop Records.

Greg Kihn was a Bay Area staple for the 50 or so years since he moved hereabouts. His early recording was on Berserkely Records. When I moved out here in the 80s, he used to play locally all the time. He became a popular morning DJ for years on the leading south bay rock radio station, and he often sang the national anthem at San Jose Sharks' games. But, he became a conservative crank in his later years and bitched a lot on air. So eventually, the radio station canned him.
Side note - my brother was on the entertainment committee for the local small college in my hometown when he was a student there in the early 80s. They brought in the Greg Kihn Band for a concert during their heyday of hit records. My brother said the guitarist flashed some money and asked him if he could acquire some blow for him, and so my brother made it so. So, he partied with the band before and after the concert. He said those guys were seriously into cocaine.

Pretty sure AB, syb, cerrano and I heard the longest and worst ever cover version of "The Breakup Song" at the bar/restaurant up the street when AB visited in 2022. Then my whole family was serenaded with it again a couple of weeks later at an 8th grade graduation dinner for my youngest. Haven't seen that band there since that summer.

Just watched the video, never knew where the Weird Al version came from! What part of the video scared you, when the bride jumped in the car at the end? He was so close to escaping! What was he thinking!rass wrote: Thu Aug 15, 2024 2:23 pm

Not sure if it was just because I was watching on my phone but that looked pretty good. And some of the shots in the beginning in the church are downright cinematic. Out over the pews, or from the children’s choir on the upper level down to the altar. Videos used to be art!The Sybian wrote: Thu Aug 15, 2024 5:39 pmJust watched the video, never knew where the Weird Al version came from!
