But are they really planning a new line parallel to the Empire Builder?

Not exactly a board game, but Balatro comes to iOS 9/26. It's like magical poker, but really sweet.

Games I've liked recently: Distilled - Make alcohol, not a ton of player interaction, but combines sweet mechanics and good themes.

Mosaic - Imagine playing Civilization 2 in an hour and a half. Area control game where you play different civilizations with different strengths. The military is the weakest part of the base game, but there is an expansion that fleshes it out. One of my favorite current games.

Game that sounds sweet but was mechanically really obtuse (and in my opinion, the juice was not worth the squeeze) - Hegemony. Play as different economic classes or the state to try and score as many points for your faction. Asymmetrical play.

Bruh, Hegemony.

I played it once and never again. I immediately sold my copy via the Board Game Geek Market.

It's a great game for the minds that can play it, but there's so much fucking overhead and the intricacies of 4 separate factions means I'd need at least 12 solid plays with the same group to actually "get it."

Trust me, I love medium/gravy games too. But that one is just too much.

Vital Lacerda games are the same way with me.

Fuck yes! But also, fuck no! I'm so addicted to it on PS5 that I should probably not have any way that I can play it at all times, not just while sitting on my couch.

Yeah can't say I've ever really been a puzzle guy but with these it's a completely different experience. Much more satisfying when the pieces are wood vs chintzy-ass cardboard.

Massive drama in Magic: The Gathering world today:

To translate to the normies: powerful, expensive cards have been "banned" in an unofficial, casual format. Their prices are tanking. There is much nashing of teeth.

Who makes these calls? An unofficial committee that has no real authority.

It's hilarious.

And this is on the heels of a major leak of new cards yesterday:

And this is on the heels of a major leak of new cards yesterday:

There are about about 30 cards they could easily ban in commander and the modern power level of the format would still be bonkers high. Mana Crypt is a rude ban for the price but if they only want one universally fast mana artifact and it's sol ring, so be it.

Jeweled Lotus however...holy shit is that a kick in the balls. I realize it technically falls in the same category, but it is completely unplayable outside of commander.

Not banning Rhystic Study and Smothering Tide is so dumb. Tracking 3 other players enchantments is bad enough, needing to track their every trigger too is awful. Frankly I think the reason they get away with less uproar against them is people just don't pay attention and also miss their own triggers so often it they are less powerful than they should be.

Re: Checkmate, Bitches! The Chess and other Board Games Thread

Post by Johnnie »

I completely agree with you. "Fast mana" is a thing in the game. And there is such an outsized attraction to it because "I NEED TO WIN FAST AT CARD GAME" mentalities amongst the population. So when you knock down the top stuff, the rest shoots up in price due to demand. Look at Mana Vault's price today.

Where it gets really murky is the fact that WOTC will see what organically makes waves and then sit on the "reprint equity" until they need to sell a set. Rhystic Study was a common from way back that, when finally reprinted, wasn't initially printed into oblivion in a meaningful way thus artificially keeping the price high. Judge promo, Secret Lair, and a subset from Eldraine...like WTF? Cheapest copy is $40.

Then there's the "this is mostly a casual format" wrinkle to all of this. Having a Rules Committee is nice, but if I want to play a card I bought I just "Rule 0" and tell my playgroup. No harm, no foul.

But the foul with this proclamation is for the folks that got taken for their cash because they wanted a powerful card for a deck and now the prices crashed. That's who I feel for. These cards aren't cheap and people who put lots of $$$ into their collections took a massive hit. If this happened to a stock the SEC would be investigating. But since it's valuable cardboard....ehhhh.

I only have 1 Dockside Extortionist and 1 Mana Crypt. Never cast the Dockside and the Mana Crypt is one of the super rare Special Guest treatments that I really need to get graded ASAP. And I play the game for fun, so it's no hit to me. But I can see how many feel very pissed. But this is what happens when Hasbro needs to make money every quarter to please their shareholders.

Oh, and if you want to know my opinion of the bans individually:

Nadu: yes, total design fail. It's a recently released card, so this makes sense.

Dockside Extortionist: yes, but should have never been reprinted in the first place. Now it looks petty. And using it to sell premium products is fuuuuuucked up.

Mana Crypt: same as above. And having super rare variants too? Ugh.

Jeweled Lotus: design fail, should have never been printed. But since it was...completely disagree with the ban now because it's literally only allowed in a few formats. This card should be as ubiquitous as Sol Ring.

As someone who could have had ~1000000 Rhystic Studies back in the day, I just hate the play pattern so want it gone. Don't think Jeweled Lotus should be ubiquitous but some decks having TWO whole artifact fast mana probably isn't the end of the world.

I feel for the people where the price matters, I am not big into commander, so it's no skin off my back (CUBE FOR LIFE BABY).
