Re: The Weather
Smashing storm surge records down here. Average of about two feet higher than recorded here (at least 100 years). Flooding is 100% going to be the story of this hurricane in Tampa. More than a few houses flooded in my neighborhood. We're high and dry, and fell ass backwards into a slightly higher elevation, or better drainage, when we bought.

About over in Atlanta but this is my street. Fortunately I am at the top of the hill but lots of very pricey homes with water. They know though. Happened pretty bad in 2009 and to a lesser degree every few years. No power. Off to find coffee and check out the office
Re: The Weather
The storm hit Augusta instead. Hope there was no loss of life and minimal damage there. On the bright side, it should open things up right of the fairway on 11.

No damage here and no power loss. Neighbors not so lucky. Was up late and just waking up now to assess in the daylight.

This is grim, but now would be a good time to remind people that Project 2025 wants to make the National Weather Service a pay site.

Re: The Weather
Asheville and surrounding areas are so fucked. The damage that I’ve been able to see is the worst of this storm. When we were up there this summer they were talking about needing rain. Sounds like they had 3-4 days of it before Helene came through. The French Broad river near Fletcher had a historical crest of 20’. I read they were over 30’ in the last few days. Roads and highways in and out are all blocked.

My college friends and I are awaiting another response from a friend who lives in Asheville. As of about 9am yesterday morning, he had some water in his basement.

I just heard from someone there. No water, no food, no gas, no power. WiFi only at the library. People walking into town because there’s lots of beer available. This is gonna be really, really bad.

Assuming most of the footage on twitter is authentic it looks really bad.

Re: The Weather
This is just horrifying. Kelli and I loved that area so much when we went there in 2020. Seeing Chimney Rock destroyed leads me to believe there is no way the AirBnb we rented is still there. So damn sad.

Re: The Weather
He replied late last night to the text chain:
We are okay.
Power back on.
No internet.
No water.
Phone spotty.
Watched the old school local news and the footage is unbelievable. Everyone keeps saying “never seen anything like this”
We went to Publix today to use their WiFi and grab some food and going there was some apocalyptic journey- so many trees and power lines down, major roads washed out, no traffic lights. Just terrible. We had some water in our basement but it could have been so much worse.

Re: The Weather
So many flooded out houses here, (Tampa).
Text from my bud in AVL.
It's really bad here. We've had no power, no cell service, no WiFi for days. Just got power and very minimal texting ability this morning. No wifi. Trees down everywhere, rivers flooded like crazy. No gas to go anywhere. It's wild. Crazy stuff!

My family has had various properties and businesses on Anna Maria Island since forever. I fear they’re fucked.

Re: The Weather
AMI is where my parents owned places for a while. My mom's aunt had a place there in the 60's, and when my parents had enough money they bought a place there in the early aughts. It was, and still is, our go to for a week at the beach. My parents tore down their one story cinder block place to build two three story places (garage only on the first floor, built to survive a storm like this), and most importantly, move all of the living quarters up 15 or so feet. They built during the few years when sulfuric Chinese drywall was being imported, and quickly learned that the stuff absolutely obliterates all electronics, as well as causes major health problems for those living there permanently. After three different microwaves crapped out in less than a year they figured it out and had to rip the houses back to the studs and install basically everything again. A couple years later they sold, not wanting the major portion of their retirement to be so dependent on things outside their control. No idea how those houses fared last week, but the thing that strikes me about this storm is that all of those one story houses, built from the 1920's through probably the 1980's (on both AMI and also many in South Tampa) are gone. Everything that replaces it will have to be elevated at least as high as what my parents' place was.

Their places looked a lot like the houses early in that video. Also, fuck Rick Scott forever.

Re: The Weather
There are several old houses here that were raised after Harvey, including one that my first ever crush (also named Kelli!) grew up in. She told me it was wild how they did it and her parents didn’t even have to take stuff off the wall before they did it.

Re: The Weather
So Helene dumped over 40 trillion gallons of water on the southeast after making landfall. That's more than Lake Tahoe, and apparently that would equal 3.5 feet of water deep over the state of North Carolina.
Apparently this was a brown-ocean event, where a hurricane makes landfall and actually is able to sustain energy because of the absurd water levels to draw moisture from as well as the heat from the ground. Just a horrible situation. I have friends who have kids at App State. They're all safe back on the other end of NC (Wilson, Wilmington).

This one’s going to burn until snowfall. In every image anyone posts, half the trees are dead from bark beetle infestation.
Luckily there’s no houses or buildings that way. But the smoke was pretty bad for us yesterday. Today it’s affecting Boulder.

Milton shot to a Cat 4 overnight and storm surges in the Tampa area are projected to be in the 8-12 *feet* range - not sure what that means for Tuesday flights but .... yeesh.
as of now it looks like by Tuesday night the winds will be starting to directly pummel Tampa.

Re: The Weather
My in-laws seem to be genuinely torn about what to do. It's a strange thing beacuse my FIL is so organized and does so much research on everything. He doesn't want to put the window/door covers on because it's a lot of work if it doesn't storm. But if it does...
They are supposed to talk to some of their more seasoned Floridian friends today so we will see what that holds. I think I'd be putting the covers on (for the unintiated they are heavy canvas or maybe even stronger like a kevlar fiber that you have to screw into grommets around all the windows...kind of like a winter swimming pool cover) and each one takes some time to do so it's a big job for just him but we encouraged him to hire someone to help.

yeah easy for me to say (up here in beautiful and calm western new york) but damn - please tell them to hire some help if need be; there's a lot of official "life-threatening" chatter about this storm. it's going to be a direct hit.

Re: The Weather
We tried on a call last night. They also (i may have mentioned this) never had their generator hooked up again after they put the pool heater in. They always have tons of bottled water and refrigerated food, so they can manage a little power loss, but a lot of damage could be nigh disastrous. My MIL cannot do anything to help and that's another reason we want them to put the covers up at a minimum but they really need to take us up on our offer to come here for a few days.MaxWebster wrote: Mon Oct 07, 2024 9:36 am yeah easy for me to say (up here in beautiful and calm western new york) but damn - please tell them to hire some help if need be; there's a lot of official "life-threatening" chatter about this storm. it's going to be a direct hit.
