So bizarre seeing a normal, cordial debate. I almost forgot what that looked like. I can't see last night moving the dial for anyone other than the one undecided voter on NBC after the debate. He said he is leaning Harris, because Vance avoided answering many questions. I thought Vance came across as normal, which is a huge feat for him. I expected he'd be really good in a debate format, and he was. If I didn't understand the issues thoroughly, I would have thought he made sense and made good points.

I was nervous about Walz beforehand, unsure how he'd perform in a debate. Townhall style, I think he'd crush Vance. Walz was very shaky on the first question, be he settled in quickly and was strong after the first 10 minutes. He misspoke a bunch, but nothing bad. Things like saying he knows a school shooter instead of saying a school shooting victim. Nothing the GOP can exploit. And I think he came across strong in admitting he misspoke when he said he was in China during the Tiananmen Square protest. First, I doubt many people knew what Vance was on about, and two, he admitted he wrong and it wasn't like a lie for political gain.

Just to put things in context and to follow up on my post last night. Despite all this coverage (which we all know why the media acts like this is a big deal), VP debates very rarely move the needle... at all.

Trump getting his ass handed to him last month moved the needle.

My concern is that in a race this tight, "rarely" could be enough. Substance doesn't seem to matter in these debates as much as aesthetics, and Vance's weirdness was definitely a detriment to that ticket, and they had been doing such a great job exploiting that before last night.

I imagine there was a lot of risk of losing the entire Walz narrative if he came out as too politician-y or aggressive or dick-ish. I don't want to assume solid strategies since before recently they haven't been all that great, but if the entire point was to let Vance get settled before nailing the soundbite on 2020, its worth it. Tie him at the hip to Trump so people can't justify it with "really I'm just voting for Vance".

No undecided swing voters were watching the VP debate. They'd only learn anything about it if there were an obvious soundbite that could go viral on TikTok. From what I understand (I didn't watch it either), there was nothing that really qualified. No "they're eating the dogs!"

JD Vance’s Old Yale Law Classmates Raise Money for Springfield’s Haitian Residents
Dozens of former classmates of Senator JD Vance of Ohio spent Tuesday night’s vice-presidential debate donating money to a fund for Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, raising more than $10,000.

In interviews, some donors characterized the contributions as an effort to repair part of the damage the Trump-Vance campaign — and Mr. Vance himself — caused by spreading bogus rumors that migrants were stealing and eating pets. Haitians living in Springfield and the broader community have faced an array of threats over the debunked claims.

Peter Chen — who was a member of the Yale Law Class of 2013 along with Mr. Vance and his wife, Usha Vance — organized the campaign in a class discussion group on Tuesday.

Mr. Chen, who grew up near Chicago and is the son of immigrants, said in an interview that he was gratified to see that more than 50 classmates, or about one-quarter of the class, had donated, posting notes of solidarity with Springfield’s Haitian community.

The right is really pushing the lie that the Feds aren't spending enough money/resources on Hurricane relief.

If you see the $750 in immediate assistance on your social feeds... That's not the only money individuals are eligible to apply for.. the $750 is just for immediate relief. You can get up to $42k from FEMA for repairs or towards a new home.

And this has nothing to do with the hundreds of millions already pledged to the state governments.

People are so fucking gullible... They just want to be angry.

it would be sad if it didn't directly affect the fking rest of us.

I actually do a lot of peripheral (very unimportant in the scheme of things) work around this and see how fking *amped up* the government gets (i.e. today) prepping for disasters - we're all on red alert again this week and tons of maps/documents are being prepped today in advance of this particular storm so relief funds *can* get out beforehand...

fk those people to their imagined hell.

What they are claiming is that all of the money we are spending to house "illegal" immigrants has been siphoned from the money that should be spent on hurricane relief.

Surprised they haven't thrown something about trans people into this mix.

This time Scarmucci is on Kamala's side and has been advising her not to make the same mistakes Hillary did.
