This thing's a Cat 5 now. It's unbelievable how fast these storms are intensifying in the bathwater of the Gulf.
Totally Kafkaesque

They are putting the window coverings up now. They are what appears to be 10-12 miles from the storm surge, but wind doesn't stop there of course.

Currently at a fleabag motel just outside Malpense airport in Milan. Plane leaves at 840 am tomorrow, connecting through JFK. Pretty sure I'll be in NYC for a few days, (weeks?). My parents evacuated. My grandmother can't/won't. Currently could not be more upset with my parents at the moment but I'm too angry to type about it right now.
Until everything is less insane, I'm mixing weed with wine.

Not exactly sure where all your clan is in and around Tampa but I hope there's less impact than expected. We are evacuating overnight to just north of Tallahassee, nearest we could find.

Re: The Weather
The (lower case C) cat was found! My parents have been feeding my cat while we're away and they called us this afternoon to say, "Oops, we think we let him out on accident. We can't find him. We've looked, but we're heading to Gainesville."
I hung up on them (my mom, really) so fast I didn't really hear their justification for WHY they thought leaving an animal behind was a good idea when there wasn't going to be any rain for like 28 hours. After multiple trips by multiple groups of friends, he was found in my youngest son's bedroom, and he's on his way to relative safety with my father in law (still in the direct path of the storm, but nowhere near the coast, meaning no surge there).
Now, just gotta worry about the "big C" CAT 5.

We've generally done a week at the beach my whole life, usually in June. It's not even comfortable to get in the Gulf anymore that time of year, it's so fucking hot.Shirley wrote: Mon Oct 07, 2024 12:11 pm This thing's a Cat 5 now. this side of the world. The eye is TINY at nearly 3.8 miles wide. This hurricane is nearing the mathematical limit of what Earth's atmosphere over this ocean water can produce.

This never would have happened under Trump. Hurricane would back down, fearing getting nuked by Trump. Harris doesn’t have the balls to nuke a hurricane. Or change its path with a sharpie.DSafetyGuy wrote: Mon Oct 07, 2024 7:32 pm

My sister's supposed to be getting married on Madeira Beach in St Pete in a couple weeks. I have a condo rented there right on the water. Needless to say, they got fucked up by Helene but she was somehow going to not have to change any plans and my condo on second floor so intact. Looking at the track, this is the first place it's hitting again right down the middle.

Been reading news stories of many people who have the means to evacuate but refuse to do so. Usually claiming that God will protect them. Oh boy.

Re: The Weather
The in-laws have put all their screens/covers up. they are well stocked with food/water. Only one place for them to go if it gets really bad and that's a laundry room with no windows. Wife talked with them yesterday and got a bit more comfortable with their situation, but not perfect. We're being gaslighted, too, like this isn't a huge national weather issue and/or the internet doesn't exist. "Well, the local news says...." but what are you going to do. We were going to head that way and kidnap them but at this point we'd be more in the way for official services and who knows how far we could have even gotten.

If they're downplaying it based on the local news, I'm pretty sure more than just you are being gaslit.

Re: The Weather
Yeah I didn't phrase that well. They are acting as though we don't have access to any information and that they have more data. Yes, it may be "more" on a granular level of area by area but the wind is going to be a mess at the minimum in the whole area. And of course they are now projecting a Cat 4 at landfall instead of Cat 3.mister d wrote: Wed Oct 09, 2024 9:02 am If they're downplaying it based on the local news, I'm pretty sure more than just you are being gaslit.

I'm definitely a weather geek and am fascinated by this on a purely scientific level but I'm not sure if I should or can watch anything over the next 48 hours.

There has been a steady stream of folks driving by the KW point. One family that included little kids in a golf cart. I guess they're not in the direct path, but, man... Seems pretty dumb.
