The first person I ever e-mailed (literally, not the Swamp derivation) died a couple days ago. It was Trey Parker’s (of South Park fame) uncle.

Fantastic callback, bfj. I watched a lot of Good Times in syndication back in the 80's and 90's.

Amos probably deserves his own thread. I'm not bitching, just more pontificating.
Don't forget his role in Coming to America.

Wrong thread oops. I did enjoy Amos in Die Hard 2.

I think Amos was probably my favorite dad from all of those great 70s shows. I don't really know why he resonated with me so much, but he did. I think he just came across as genuine and someone who really cared for his kids even when they (often) made him mad.

Amos clashed with Norman Lear over the shows direction, and was fired for it.Shirley wrote: Wed Oct 02, 2024 9:58 am I think Amos was probably my favorite dad from all of those great 70s shows. Amid traditional sitcom high jinks, the show addressed gang violence and teen pregnancy, among other social issues. But Mr. Amos routinely clashed with the all-White writing staff, and with Lear, over what he considered the dilution of serious topical matters to focus on the antics of his fast-talking screen son J.J., played by the wiry comedian Jimmie Walker.
Mr. Amos found the emphasis on Walker’s silly strut and wardrobe, “dy-no-mite” catch phrase and shady, get-rich-quick schemes offensive. He contended that more attention should have been paid to his character’s two other children, who aspired to be a doctor and a lawyer. He and Rolle, reportedly aghast at Walker’s breakout stardom and the example he set for Black youths, had little on-set interaction with him.
Mr. Amos, who had angrily protested the show’s direction, was fired by Lear over the phone in 1976, and the James Evans character was killed off in a car accident.

Re: Worthy of mention, too obscure for own thread
Did they also ship him off to some work location out of state at some point, too?
I have a weird memory about that, though I do remember him dying, which I'm almost positive is where the Damn Damn Damn moment comes from.
*pause*
Ah, that's right... He was killed in a car accident in Mississippi where he was looking to set up an auto repair shop and move the family out of state.
Esther Rolle hated the direction of the show, too, and they had her move out of state with a new fiance at the end of her run.

Re: Worthy of mention, too obscure for own thread
Just found out he was from here (East Orange) and had ties to my town. Had no idea.
Re: Worthy of mention, too obscure for own thread
Yeah, the JJ stuff didn't really fit in with the rest of the show, although as a kid, I kind of loved it. I can certainly see why others on the show were frustrated and probably a bit jealous.

goddammit.
one of my first baseball "heroes" as a kid. Absolutely was "most-mimicked" delivery in elementary school in the late 70s (hm: tekulve, fidrych).
also have an autographed picture of him right here on my wall that he signed for me a minute before selling me one of his Cuban sandwiches outside Fenway. which was quite tasty IIRC.

John Kinsel Sr., Navajo Code Talker in World War II, Dies at 107
John Kinsel Sr., a World War II veteran who was one of the last surviving Navajo Code Talkers, a group of Marines whose encrypted wartime messages based on the Navajo language helped secure an Allied victory in the Pacific, died on Saturday. He was 107.
Buu Nygren, president of the Navajo Nation, announced Mr. Kinsel’s death in a post on social media from Window Rock, Ariz.
An estimated 400 Navajo Code Talkers served during World War II, transmitting a code crafted from the Navajo language that U.S. forces used to confuse the Japanese and communicate troop movements, enemy positions and other critical battlefield information.

Rest easy.
Just fucking awful.
ETA - what sucks is this guy was going places. He was going to take USF someplace it had never been, but he'd likely have been plucked by a much bigger program and had a run of success there as well.
IOW, he'd have had his own thread if not for leaving us too early.

OK - I was at USF during those Metro years. I was back at FAU & PBCC during the last couple seasons of the Sunbelt.govmentchedda wrote: Fri Oct 25, 2024 7:36 amNope. Pre-internet, ESPN was a different beast back then. To even get your game shown during SportsCenter was huge. Or so it felt anyway. Now 10-20% of their CBB content is #CinderellaCityBaby.
