That said, other than the "suck my clit" (suck my cunt?) comment, I think we'd have praised a Harris voter who had to remove her Harris/Walz t-shirt to vote.

Since the newspaper itself won't endorse anyone:

It has fallen to me, the humor columnist, to endorse Harris for president

just a real quick distinction here that seems pedantic but actually does matter

the "newspaper itself" was not set to endorse Harris. it was the newspaper's editorial board that was going to endorse Harris before it was spiked.

it matters because the editorial board and reporting units are separate entities under one umbrella. the reason the "liberal media" thing works is that far too many people believe the editorial board and the reporting units are one in the same. "oh, the WaPo endorsed Harris, they're a liberal outlet and they're just out to get conservatives" etc etc etc

I'll defer to those older than me on this, but I do wonder if the decline in physical newspaper reading has accelerated the shift and blurring between editorial boards and reporting. when you are reading a paper, you're used to the A section leading with hard news and reporting before going to distinctly marked editorial/opinion pages and then the business section and sports, etc.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but typically when a newspaper endorses a candidate, the Editor-in-Chief writes the endorsement. It's not some random opinion writer. To me, and I think pretty much everyone who doesn't work in a newsroom, this is functionally equivalent to saying the paper has endorsed that candidate.

I gotta be honest. I've kinda stopped paying complete attention to Bronto's posts because he seems to only chime in when it's to correct something someone has said. It's been like this for a while now.

Got it, Stan. Jeff Bezos himself speaking on behalf of the entity he owns didn't endorse Kamala, and in fact squashed it amongst the people that work there, so therefore I'm wrong on the slightest technicality. Bravo.

Anyway, this is really funny:

the editorial board typically makes the endorsement. like in your hometown paper here

in this specific case, two opinion writers drafted the endorsement of Harris and it was approved by the opinion editor before it was spiked. the executive editor did not write it.

I don't think an editorial board speaks for everyone at a newspaper, no matter what the topic is.

I'm sorry you're wrong a lot

ETA: on a serious note, it's really, really bad that the endorsement got spiked for myriad reasons! simply just trying to point out the distinctions at play here and how the generalizations have, in my view, led to the "liberal media!" accusations that have permeated political discourse over the past 30 years.

"everyone" in an organization being in line with an endorsement is not a reasonable expectation, and one that i don't think anyone rationally expects

Speaking as one of like maybe three Swampers who has ever worked at a newspaper and maybe the only one who has sat in on an editorial board meeting, it’s fair to say the role is maybe too complex to sum up very pithily because you’re dealing with human dynamics, corporate politics, community engagement and a dozen other things that don’t always mesh well.

But at its core it’s really just a committee that tries to achieve some clarity on what the editorial position of the newspaper is. (Again that doesn’t necessarily mean it reflects only the people on it bc they have to speak for their co-workers and the community the paper serves amongst others.)

In some ways an editorial section of a newspaper is an outdated concept and in other ways it’s more important than ever.

He's a fucking hack. If Rogan didn't open the club in Austin Kill Tony would never have taken off the way it did. That show is absolute ass. The "diamonds in the rough" that he has found go out on the road and find that being a headliner is hard when you have to come up with more than a new minute every week.

I watched the longer version of his set and he came out and was absolutely bombing in front of that crowd with his regular shitty material. I'm not sure they all even knew who he was. He was getting the flop sweats and decided to grab the lowest hanging fruit possible. Now he retreats to "they're just jokes".

AFL-CIO has been renting space upstairs for the last year or so. Better than the black republicans who were here in 2022 but then again the cops never had to show up and the entire building didnt stink of weed and they didnt park in the handicap spots... just sayin. But theyve sent everyone to Pennsylvania apparently. Not sure if thats because its do or die there or just down on Georgia.

Of course he knew...he was workshopping the jokes the night before.

Trump rally comedian workshopped racist Puerto Rico line at NYC comedy club the night before
It was not the first time Hinchcliffe had used the Puerto Rico line — he practiced it at The Stand comedy club in New York City, where he made a surprise appearance Saturday night, according to an NBC News producer and three other people who happened to be in the audience.

The joke did not draw laughs, just a handful of awkward chuckles. Hinchcliffe told the audience that he would be performing at the Madison Square Garden rally the next day and said multiple times during his routine that he would get a better reaction “tomorrow at the rally.”
And it could have been a whole lot worse:

Trump’s Shock Comic Was Set to Call Harris a ‘C*nt’
“He had a joke calling [Vice President Kamala] Harris a ‘cunt,’” a campaign insider involved in the discussions about the event told The Bulwark. “Let’s say it was a red flag.”

Hinchcliffe’s remarks—and the ensuing backlash—has sparked questions about how such an offensive speech was allowed at such a high-profile rally; whether it was deliberate; and why a presidential campaign would elevate a roast-master comic edgelord in the closing days of a tight race for the White House.

Campaign staffers had asked all speakers to submit drafts of their speeches ahead of time—before they were loaded into the teleprompter—according to the aforementioned sources. Once the objectionable “cunt” joke was spotted, the sources said, a staffer asked Hinchcliffe to strike it. He complied.

It's always the ones that you most suspect...

‘This is political bulls**t’: Former Republican candidate charged with stealing Madison County election ballots
MADISON COUNTY, Ind. — A former Republican candidate running for an Indiana seat in the U.S. House of Representatives has been arrested and charged with stealing several election ballots during a recent voting machine test.

Larry L. Savage Jr., a candidate in the Republican 5th District primary held earlier this year, was arrested Tuesday morning by Madison County authorities and charged with destroying/misplacing a ballot and theft. He has since been released on a $500 cash bond.

The charges filed against Savage, a 51-year-old Anderson resident and precinct committeeman, stem from an incident on Oct. 3 in which two election ballots went missing at the Madison County Government Center during testing of the local voting machines.

Court documents show county officials began testing voting machines at 10 a.m. on Oct. 3, an event open to the public. Several citizens attended the tests and were allowed to run “test” ballots through the machines assigned to their county.

Despite being marked “test,” the ballots were still officially tracked and counted by the State and included real candidate names as well as differing votes. After testing, officials found one straight-Republican ballot and one write-in ballot were missing.

A review of security footage, which was subsequently being live-streamed online, showed Savage handling the two missing ballots. He can also be heard confirming with an election official that these are “absolutely, totally real ballots.”

In the video Savage can be seen looking around the room before folding up two ballots and putting them in his sweatshirt pocket.
I mean...who would have guessed?
