What was the first music you ever bought?
Sgt Pepper's. Cassette. Whatever the record store that was on main street in Lake Placid in 1986.
First CD was the Stone Roses self-titled. I was gifted a copy of U2's War and Under A Blood Red Sky a few months earlier.

Kansas, Point of Know Return
There were a couple of 45s before that but I don’t remember which.

If you count “ordered through your mom’s Columbia record club account”, it would be Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - Deja Vu. First I bought with my own money was The Grass Roots - Greatest Hits.

Re: What was the first music you ever bought?
Don't remember my first music purchase as a kid (probably something embarrassing like Bay City Rollers), but remember the first 5 CD's that I bought when I got my first CD player...summer of '87 when I started getting paychecks from my first real job at Boeing.
Pat Metheny Group - Travels (the double live album)
Paul Simon - Graceland
U2 - Joshua Tree
XTC - Skylarking
REM - Document
It was the REM album that made me buy the CD player. I had decided I wasn't buying another album until I had a CD player, and then the new REM was coming out.

Same situation for me…I don’t remember cassettes but I do remember first CDs:
Def Leppard - Hysteria
Poison - Open Up and Say Ahh

Re: What was the first music you ever bought?
I'm pretty sure my first album purchase was when I was probably about 9 or so. I had some money, maybe from a birthday, so I went the music section of K-Mart. I wanted to be cool and buy an album like my older sister, but when I got there, I realized I didn't really know many bands. I recognized the Bee-Gees though, and bought an album of theirs. I knew no songs on it. When I played it at home, I didn't really like any of it. Good first music lesson.
Later, when I was a bit older, I made my first real album purchase - Paradise Theater by Styx. It was a super cool record with laser engravings on it that showed a picture when you moved it around.

Totally Kafkaesque

My first cd (one of two I bought at the same time) was also REM. Life’s Rich Pageant. I also bought the Best of Squeeze.DaveInSeattle wrote: Sat Nov 02, 2024 11:41 am Don't remember my first music purchase as a kid (probably something embarrassing like Bay City Rollers), but remember the first 5 CD's that I bought when I got my first CD player...summer of '87 when I started getting paychecks from my first real job at Boeing.

Re: What was the first music you ever bought?
I have no idea, but when I was first getting into music, I was part of two groups:
Ozzy Osborne, J Giels, ACDC etc.
Whoudini, Run DMC, Eric B, etc.
There's literally no telling.

I don’t remember the music I bought when I was a kid, but I wish I had my 45’s collection still. I did remember buying Steve Martin’s Let’s Get Small record as a kid though. Probably wasn’t first, but what a great comedy record.

First cassette I recall is Bon Jovi Slippery When Wet. I also got an LL Cool J very early (Walking with a Panther?) and I THINK my first CD was bought in college and it was Tom Petty's wildflowers.
My house already had most of the Billy Joel catalog already, but I do recall finally finding Cold Spring Harbor at a used record place when I was 20-21 or so.

No real clue, but I'm pretty sure early CD purchases for me were En Vogue's Funky Divas, Pearl Jam's Ten, and Tony! Toni! Tone!'s The Revival. Must've gotten a walkman in the early 90's.

Re: What was the first music you ever bought?
Totally forgot I bought Walk Like a Panther! We were on vacation and I left the cassette sitting out on the night table. When we came back to the room, it was gone! I knew the maid stole it, and my father wouldn’t report it. I was so pissed! “Tina’s got a big ole butt, so I’m leaving you!” Man, just read the lyrics… horrible that’s what I listened to at 13 yo. Probably didn’t fully understand it. And man, bragging about trolling g a high school to pick up girls? I don’t care how big Brenda’s butt was, not Cool LL.A_B wrote: Mon Nov 04, 2024 8:19 am First cassette I recall is Bon Jovi Slippery When Wet. Re: What was the first music you ever bought?
I’m pretty sure the first LP I ever bought with my own money (I was 8-ish) was the Rolling Stones’ 2 LP compilation, ‘Hot Rocks’.
I was off to the races buying Stones albums after that. Zeppelin soon afterward. By the time I was 10 my mom helped me get into one of those tape clubs, and soon after I was into Foreigner, Boston, Thin Lizzy, BÖC, Styx, etc.
