Um... No it's not.
I feel like that was supposed to be written in orange.

My cousin and friend are both pilots. Thanks to the GI Bill neither of them had debt entering the workforce after pilot school.

So they start out making good money and after a couple years they make really, really good money.

And while it's a lot of living in hotels, they get to live in the good ones while on the road. Definitely a fun life to live if you're single with no attachments anywhere.

Captain makes good money, but you need years of First Officer. My cousin retired as a pilot from the Air Force and got a job at United, it was under $100,000. He was flying for a private company for a bit, I think United hired him then put the offer on hold, and he was making like $50-$60k. Looks like captains make $250 - $400k. And with a wife and kids, travel doesn’t seem great. Also seems tedious as fuck. And stewardesses ain’t what they used to be.

My one minute of research says it takes 4-20 years to move up from first officer to captain. Plus he’s got his pension, so great if you make Captain.

If I was still on speaking terms with my cousin I'd text him and ask him what he was making as a first officer and how long it took for him to become captain.

From what I remember he wasn't picked up by a major airline as fast as some other folks and lost out on a big promotion to JetBlue because of COVID.

What I do know is that ATP is an absolute scam of a company. ASU dropped them because they'd force students to indebt themselves massively. The students would "use up" their huge loan and still need lots more hours, check rides, and ratings. Many would drop the class. The ones who didn't were using the GI Bill and the government took care of payments.

John Oliver really needs to do a Last Week Tonight on ATP.

So, at about 6:30 pm we take our old dog for a short spin around the block (because she only poops on a walk). Ten minutes later, we walk back into a smoky house with the smoke alarms blaring. Fuck. Actually, no big deal - my wife left a stove burner on where she was melting some butter. Oops. So we open all the windows, turn on the fans - smoke clears, smoke alarm turns off. But… the alarm company dispatched the fire department and for some reason the police also showed up. Sorry guys! False alarm!

So, now, all the neighbors are texting and asking what’s up. Sheesh.

Technically the alarm wasn't false, since it did what it was supposed to do. Sounds like the system worked perfectly.

Glad it wasn't an emergency, though!

Hate to chuckle as it's obviously an ESL situation but just overheard a woman refer to a date as "Octember 5" and her native-english-speaking conversation partner just let it slide.

At what point did so many people start replacing "when" with "whenever"? As in, "I was at work, and whenever I got home, the door was unlocked."

While we're down this path, at what point did adverbs disappear from our collective vocabulary? The amount of times people should be tacking "-ly" to words and don't is so common that I think perhaps they aren't teaching this is school anymore.

I try not to let stuff like this bother me, and I'm to the point where the adverb thing is just a blip.

The when-->whenever thing is just something I've noticed a lot the last few months. Might be because I'm watching a bunch of police bodycam clips on YouTube and those folks are mostly very dumb.

On a completely unrelated note, the Sovereign Citizen moron brigade is stunningly stupid. I think they all watch clips from, like 5 years ago when the cops didn't know what to do with their nonsense (I'm traveling, not driving... what?), but now EVERY cop knows what to do and they yoink them from their car after only a few warnings.

So, so stupid.

I don't think it's common among folks that speak decent English. Like I said above, there is a certain cohort that is employing it frequently. And it's an odd thing to do, right? I think they think the words are interchangeable and it makes them sound smarter... maybe?

I was always taught that to be a better writer you just drop adverbs completely altogether.

It forces you to utilize a better word instead of a weak word in conjunction with with a lame, exaggerative one.

Maybe it has caught on in a lot more places?

Perhaps this song should say “I badly want you”, instead of “I want you bad” (Note: this song is 35 years old, so not really helping the claim of recency.)

First off, now that I've put this in the Swamp Brain, I bet you guys will hear/see it more.

But, a few examples:

Don't take this so personal.-->Don't take this so personally.
I want you to dress nice this evening.-->I want you to dress nicely this evening.
It is real hot today.-->It is really hot today.

There's a Magic: The Gathering content creator that talks about making a deck with 2 word combos with 2+3 syllable card names as her Duel of the Fates deck.

And in my brain 2 word 2+3 syllable combos are sometimes to the tune of This is Halloween.

Ya know, I was thinking last night about the line from the Declaration of Independence All Men Are Created Equal. I learned that that line doesn't mean what most people think it does.

When you remember the fact of who wrote it, and you add the subtext, the line is really Look King George, were white, land owning rich men too. We're as equal as you.

In other words All Men Are Created Equal was the 18th Century way of saying YOU THINK YOU'RE BETTER THAN ME!?!? Which makes sense when you realize that this country was founded by East Coast Townies with an inferiority complex.

At the local Portuguese place for tapas/dinner and they have ESPN deportes on and two observations so far are that (a) there is a Spanish version of the podcaster or whatever she is commercial for MNF with a different actress and (2) the bottom line en espanol labels the end of the first hockey period as 1/3 and the second period as 2do and first (or 1st) of something as 1er or 1ra depending the context.

I can work out all of the Spanish words and phrases if they’re on screen long enough but the abbreviations are throwing me.

And finally, after 5 years, my wife and I had our wedding reception that was delayed by my deployment, COVID, my move to Korea, her melanoma treatment, my move back stateside, & my retirement.

It went off smoothly and everyone had fun. Outside of the one bartender that was unnecessarily being a dumbass when people ordered drinks, it simply couldn't have been better. The food, venue, music, and overall vibe was fantastic.

Once we were done at 11, a good chunk of us went downtown to bar hop. And let me tell you, the bars I drank at 15 years ago are still there, but man, I felt old. Also, the going out attire has changed. Millennials were all business casual in the club. These young'ns today? Not so much. Dudes are dressed casual and lame and the ladies are a mix of casual and...strip club chic. I was not expecting that.

What was great despite being one of the olds? We were still in our wedding attire. When my wife passed people on the street the clapping, wooing, and congratulations thrown her way was awesome. When we walked into places everyone gave us high fives and well wishes. Several girls just came up to her half in tears just to talk to her about getting married one day. It was kinda surreal.

Incredible, incredible night overall.
