Re: Random Politics
My internet ads are 50% [ubiquitous fear mongering announcer's voice] "Radical Leftist Sue Altman will raise your taxes, murder all policemen and eat your babies!" It's so bad, I overheard my daughter absent mindedly saying it to herself. My wife said a couple weeks ago, "I don't know what Sue Altman is running for, but I'm voting for her. If they are trying this hard to label her as extreme Left-wing, she must be good." Now she says she doesn't care who Sue Altman is, she is voting for her because she is so sick of the attack ads. Funny thing, I actually had to look up what she was running for and who she was running against. Most of the ads don't even say! I assumed it was federal House of Reps, and it's correct. I can't vote for anyone in the GOP for Congress while Trump is in the picture, so baby-killing, cop hating, tax loving Sue Altman is it!

Re: Random Politics
You're more understanding than me, Syb. Prior to 2016, I've never voted a straight ticket, and I've been registered with both parties at various times (to select the best option in primaries). I was registered Republican for the majority of the time in my life, but not anymore. After the way they fell in line in 2016 for that fucking guy, no way. They abdicated their responsibility to Americans when they backed him. I don't think I'll ever vote for a Republican again, unless it's a really egregious reason like there's a competent Republican and he's running against Menendez (and I'm talking the murderers, not the crooked Senator). Hell. One of my fraternity brothers was a big Trump advocate on FB. He ended up running for city council in his town as a Republican a few years back. I sent his opponent $10 out of spite, even if I was pretty sure he was going to win (his family are prominent vendors on a Jersey Shore boardwalk town). The Sybian wrote: Wed Oct 16, 2024 2:34 pm My internet ads are 50% [ubiquitous fear mongering announcer's voice] "Radical Leftist Sue Altman will raise your taxes, murder all policemen and eat your babies!" Meanwhile my sister in Arizona, who voted Trump then Biden, says she will vote for Harris but also wants to vote for GOP in federal office for "balance."The Sybian wrote: Wed Oct 16, 2024 2:34 pmI can't vote for anyone in the GOP for Congress while Trump is in the picture, so baby-killing, cop hating, tax loving Sue Altman is it!
I explained that the current GOP is insane. And that balance will come from either the fact that the GOP will take over the Senate or that even if the Dems hold both houses, balance will come from the moderate members of the party who won't go along with anything crazy.
It was at this point that she told me how sad she was that Sinema is stepping down.

Campaign for state Senate graffitis political slogan on downtown Spokane sidewalks, Riverfront Park
Republican candidate for state Senate Jim Wilson literally made his mark on Downtown Spokane.
Volunteers from his campaign for the seat vacated by Democrat Andy Billig took to the streets Sunday night, painting the town blue with stenciled political advertisements on sidewalks downtown and in Riverfront Park.
Volunteers used “water soluble paint” that came off with soap and water to tag “Join the movement Spokane.com” repeatedly on street corners, pavement outside the mall and the orange planters on the recently reopened Post Street bridge.
They also affixed sticky notes with the same messaging around the city.
The advertised slogan leads to a Facebook page of the same name, which links to a website paid for by Wilson’s campaign against current state Rep. Marcus Riccelli, a Democrat, as well as other Democratic candidates Natasha Hill and Bob Ferguson, for governor and state representative, respectively.
In an interview Tuesday, Wilson said some young volunteers in his campaign came up with the idea to raise awareness about crime and a feeling of being unsafe downtown for relatively cheap.
“This was our creative way to bring attention to a subject that’s not being talked about in this campaign. This is being glossed over and we don’t want to gloss over it anymore,” Wilson said.
City staff and business employees spent hours Monday and Tuesday removing the graffiti using soap and water.
City spokeswoman Erin Hut called the graffiti “disappointing” and “frustrating,” pointing to resources used to remove the graffiti that could have been used elsewhere.
“It was not on the docket for our staff to do that morning and it took away from other work they were supposed to do,” Hut said.

Re: Random Politics
I got distracted and forgot to post that I had a pollster come to my door yesterday. It was about a ballot issue for vouchers for schooling. Asked if I had time for a few questions. I said "Sure" and he goes "Are you planning on voting yes or no on Amendment #2? I say "no" and he puts his phone in his pocket and says that's all the questions.
I kind of wish I hadn't tipped my hand so early. Granted it could have been just an "If A, then B" type thing and a "No" didn't have further prompts, but I like to imagine he was ignoring me because it lets me yell at the clouds.

Hilarious commercial for the GOP Senate candidate in NJ. “Andy Kim lives in a million dollar house!” That just isn’t going to turn heads in NJ. My town isn’t all that rich compared to neighboring towns, and the average home price is pretty close to $1 million.

Re: Random Politics
Just wondering if people posting here believe President elect Trump is selecting his cabinet solely based upon the negative media response he is likely to receive so that he can remain central to media stories despite the attention he receives having been voted in as POTUS following a 4 year job interview?
I think he picks the most shocking people to serve for just this reason, so he can be even more present in the media and extend his platford to bitch and moan.

That’s an interesting thought. I was assuming he’s rewarding people for giving him money, saying nice things about him, or proving loyalty. Clearly isn’t looking at qualifications. I just don’t think there’s much thought behind any of the picks. If the stories are true about the AG picks, Trump was annoyed that legit choices were explain their legal theories and discussing how they would do the job, and Gaetz was in a private jet with Trump and said he’d slut throats for Trump, so Trump spur of the moment chose Gaetz.Tom 1860 wrote: Wed Nov 20, 2024 1:55 am Just wondering if people posting here believe President elect Trump is selecting his cabinet solely based upon the negative media response he is likely to receive so that he can remain central to media stories despite the attention he receives having been voted in as POTUS following a 4 year job interview?

I think what you have to remember with Trump is that he was born rich, and in addition to being fucking stupid, he’s never had to want or plan for anything. This guy is almost 80 years old, and since he’s had everything at a moment’s notice, he’s never developed the skill to do any long-range planning. He’s incapable of making a decision and seeing the results past the next ten minutes. So I don’t know if it’s that he wants to stay in the news, but rather someone who butters him up is going to stay in his head for five minutes, so he rewards them.
ETA: also you need to remember that for the first 70+ years of his life, no one has ever told him “no”. He has never been in a single job where he could’ve been fired before he was President. That’s an additional thing to consider; he lived his entire life in the lap of luxury, and being challenged is something he’s never experienced. This doesn’t condone his actions in any capacity; it’s simply the explanation I’m guessing.
Which is part of his appeal. Think of mediocre, stupid people. They’ve been shit on, and see women and minorities and LGBT people get attention and jobs through their hard work, while these mediocre people seethe. In comes Trump, who’s the avatar of success in their eyes. They see him as this strong, tough guy that will oppose those who they see are keeping them down. This guy doesn’t take any guff from “those” people. And remember his fans are too stupid to see through his obvious facade that all of us see. And then it becomes a little easier to understand that 20% of America is stupid enough to follow this clown.

You know, if Sarah McBride really wants to fuck some shit up, and I in no way know if she is that type or not, she should just go into every men's restroom in the capitol that she passes for the next two years.
It just occurred to me that this is a key plot point (and presumably true?) in Hidden Figures.
