This is my favorite question on here ever. I want to say something stupid like Amarillo tx.Rex wrote: Thu Nov 21, 2024 7:44 pm Could be easy, could be impossible, hard to say so let’s find out:
What is the largest U.S. city by population that does not have a Division 1 men’s basketball school?

Re: Gunpowder's Gold Star Trivia
Actually going to go just a little east. Oklahoma City doesn’t have a major college I don’t think. Just a small church of christ school.

Re: Gunpowder's Gold Star Trivia
Yeah, it’s OKC! Interesting because 1) most people probably think of it as a college sports town and 2) it has an NBA team
Re: Gunpowder's Gold Star Trivia
I was gonna guess Denver. They don't have a D1 hoops team do they? The googles tell me it's just slightly bigger than OKC. (716K to 702K)Rex wrote: Thu Nov 21, 2024 8:56 pm Yeah, it’s OKC! Interesting because 1) most people probably think of it as a college sports town and 2) it has an NBA team

I stand corrected. I didn't realize that the U of Denver has a D1 hoops team.Shirley wrote: Fri Nov 22, 2024 1:03 pmI was gonna guess Denver. They don't have a D1 hoops team do they? Winning is for suckers. What is the losingest FBS program, by total losses? I’ll give a silver star for top-5 guesses
This is FBS, so no Ivies or other bullshit like that.

Indiana is The Biggest Loser, having been fucked over by the refs a total of 713 times.
Rutgers and Northwestern are both top-5. There are two others left.

Re: Gunpowder's Gold Star Trivia
surprisingly, Duke is 49th on this list.
Re: Gunpowder's Gold Star Trivia
Rice is 11th.
Re: Gunpowder's Gold Star Trivia
A side note: Rutgers is the school with the most wins but still a losing record all time. Who has the most losses but still a winning record? It’s not somebody who has been named, and I think it’s near impossible unless you know.

Re: Gunpowder's Gold Star Trivia
I'd go vandy on the big losers but not the latest question.
For that one it has to be someone who goes 6-5 or 7-6 a lot. So a mid tier major conference team. Something stupid like Iowa State or Arkansas.

Virginia might be a biggest loser. They intentionally nerfed their program for many years.

Iowa State is 6th
Arkansas is 56th
Re: Gunpowder's Gold Star Trivia
Virginia is 13th, and since you’re the only one who I think might have gotten this, they are the losingest team with a winning record (.515 as of October 23, about 40 games above .500).Shirley wrote: Mon Dec 09, 2024 9:32 am Virginia might be a biggest loser. Re: Gunpowder's Gold Star Trivia
So, when I was younger, NW was epically bad. At one point in the early 80s, they broke the record for the longest losing streak. I think they went 3 or 4 years without a win.
Right on the heels of that accomplishment, Columbia embarked on their own bout of futility. Again, going 3 or 4 years without a win.
That's my guess.

BC is 62nd.

Re: Gunpowder's Gold Star Trivia
Kentucky is probably close but surely we're better than Kansas, which is what I should have said instead of Arkansas. So I'll go kansas.

Re: Gunpowder's Gold Star Trivia
Kansas is #5, one more to go!
And you're right, Kentucky is close but not quite bad enough, at #12.

Now that I'm focused here, I'm looking at schools that have been playing the sport for a very long time but have had little overall success.
I'm going with the Vanderbilt of the ACC... the Demon Deacons.

Wake is the #4, and that's a wrap!
Going down the list, it really gives you a sense of how different the college football experience is for fans of the bluebloods. For instance, #5 Kansas was at 684 losses when this list cuts off. Compare that to:
Michigan: 356
Oklahoma: 344
Alabama: 339
Notre Dame: 338
Ohio State: 334
All playing roughly the same number of games, between 1300-1400.

I would NOT have guessed Virginia was over .500. Actually, this page says they're a bit under .500 - https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/schools/virginia/

Re: Gunpowder's Gold Star Trivia
I was going by Wikipedia. There's so much gray area with old games--who won, was it actually played, should it count for the school.

New question.
We’ve all heard of Scorigami by now. What is the most COMMON final score in NFL history?

My avatar corresponds on my place in the Swamp posting list with the all-time Home Run list. Tied with Mel Ott at Number 25 is Miguel Cabrera at 511.

14-10 is 34th
There really are a lot of boring, normal scores out there. But this one has happened 60 more times than any other.
