Nice! I'm at FEST in GNV this weekend. Superchunk, Cloud Nothings, Joyce Manor, Pohgoh, and likely a bunch of other bands today/tonight. This is such a fun weekend. ~10 venues, mostly downtown, all walkable. Hundreds of bands.
Funny - I always knew her as Hogtown.
Is that a UF thing or city/independently run?
Independent, like most of the bands here. Year 22.
Awesome sounds fun.
I'm reminiscing on those years in the early 90s re: Guavaween. It was always the last Saturday in October.

Anyone ever seen Maggie Rogers? I just won tickets on KEXP to see her next week.
A friend of mine saw her in Denver. Said she was great.
Show was last night, and it was fun. Wasn't super aware of her music, and it was a bit too far towards the "pop" end of the scale for me personally, but really enjoyed it, and she puts on a hell of a show. The audience, which we estimated at about 75% women, was super into it.
Her opener was a guy named Ryan Beatty...and it was weird. His voice is amazing, and his songs are "pretty", but he performed while sitting on a tree stump, with a long-handled axe sitting next to him. Caity was wondering afterwards if maybe he was on the spectrum, because he did not seem very comfortable performing to an audience.
One last side note: It was great getting the free tickets from KEXP. We had good seats, in one of the "club level" sections. Every time I go to a show at the new Climate Pledge Arena, I'm amazed at how good the sound is...and the video boards are crystal clear. It's remarkable.
Billy Strings is in Baltimore tonight and tomorrow night. Wish I could go both nights, but am glad to have tickets tonight's show since I am only making 1 - they are doing the entire Oh Brother soundtrack and, man, am I pumped for it - (going in "costume" in that I ordered a white robe and will wear it over a suit and go has one of the congregants getting baptized) -
Billy Strings has announced an “O Billy, Where Art Thou?” theme for his upcoming Halloween shows at CFG Bank Arena in Baltimore, which will feature a theatrical stage production and special guest appearances by Jerry Douglas, Sierra Hull, Duane Trucks, Lindsay Lou, and many more.
On Halloween night, Strings and his band—featuring Royal Masat, Alex Hargreaves, Billy Failing, and Jarrod Walker—will deliver a theatrical stage adaptation inspired by the beloved Coen Brothers film O Brother, Where Art Thou? Tim Blake Nelson—an actor and musician who starred in the film—will join the ensemble, along with Jerry Douglas (the legendary dobro player who contributed to the movie’s soundtrack), and Chris Thomas King (who portrayed bluesman Tommy Johnson in the film).
Also joining the fray are mandolinist Sierra Hull, Duane Trucks of Widespread Panic, cellist Nat Smith, songstress Rachael Davis, Cris Jacobs, and Lindsay Lou.
The festivities won’t end there. On November 1st, the ensemble returns for “One More Night on the Run! The Men & Women of Constant Sorrow,” where they will dive deep into the songs of Strings’ new album, Highway Prayers, and more. Fans are encouraged to dress in costume for both nights.

Um...no.
Last night ripped. Transcendent experience. Turns out I might be a jams-band person. Who knew. I am thinking of heading to New Orleans at the end of December for one of their shows there, maybe. Asheville in mid-February for certain. Maybe Nashville in March. I think I am in a quasi-following mood.
Here's a link to the set-list -
- they went next to last song with an absolutely ungodly When the Levee Breaks. I might have found musical god during several points of the night and especially during that cover. And I wasn't even on acid.
Oh, and Jerry fuckin' Douglas was there - always wanted to see him live - life-goal achieved. Dobro also on fire. Tim Blake Nelson was there and led on Jailhouse Now. Chris Thomas King and Duane Trucks were there and joined and led Gravedigger Gonna Cut You Down which was unreal musically and the set/visuals to go with it. T. Bone Burnett joined and led on Cash's When a Man Comes Around.
10 out of 10 experience. Between this and the two Green Day concerts late summer, and a few other smaller live shows I've caught this year, have figured out quite late in life (54 next month) that live music reaches me in ways that are probably really good for my mental health. Need to make this kind of thing a priority to the extent I can, I think.

This for me. So cathartic.
Until everything is less insane, I'm mixing weed with wine.
I was genuinely asking before figuring out you meant the band. But there were a lot of “theys” in that post which prompted me asking.
So glad you enjoyed it man. To me, live music is one of the most healing things. It can take all my worries away for a brief moment in time. Hope you go to New Orleans!
Yeah, sorry, the whole band I was referring to with they.
Past Halloween shows they've done have been themed WWF, Lord of the Rings, Clockwork Orange - making a mental note to get to wherever their Halloween show is in 2025 too.

I am right there with you. Before the pandemic, we used to go see a lot of live music, but we've kind of fallen out of it. The whole "getting home at midnight" and then getting up for work the next morning is getting harder and harder, regardless of whether we have anything to drink or not. But I miss the experience.
I think I've found my new sub-genre of concert...the up-and-coming artist who is playing a bigger space now, and kind of can't believe it. Nation of Language very specifically called that out, and got the same kind of feeling from Maggie Rogers. Was very cool to see that.
Going to see my favourite live band tonight, Goldie Lookin Chain.
I firmly recommend anyone with a like for rap and great lyrical work, while having their tongue firmly placed in their cheek, to check out their stuff on youtube.
My 18 year old asked to go see George Thorogood and the Delaware Destroyers in Feb. Realized this will be his first live rock concert. I think he will be the youngest person there...I will probably be second youngest.

I have many friends who saw that Billy Motherfucking Strings show who have seen a shit ton of concerts in their lifves and rank that show as a top 5 ever for them.
Live music is good for the soul TB, no doubt.
I missed it but I got to take Max to his first Halloween costume party with a bunch of other autistic adults. Not quite as entertaining, but it also did my soul good to see my boy so happy to be at a party.

That's kinda like when I took my oldest to but where she was the youngest and I was probably close to the oldest. Really bracketed that shit.

Re the bold - that is nice to hear, wasn't sure if I was a prisoner of recency bias, but, holy hell, it was so fucking good.
Re the underline - that is awesome on every level.
Saw Billy Strings a year+ ago, and there was more weed smoke in the air than any other show I’ve ever seen. We had beers a couple hours before the show with his banjo player, Billy Failing. BF is the nephew of my good friend, Ben, who was also there for the beers and show. BF is a nice young man who graduated from the Berklee College of of Music. Ben attended his wedding in Bend Oregon, as did Billy Strings, the rest of the band, and various other musicians. Ben said there was an epic post-reception jam session.

At risk of repeating myself (can’t remember)…

dear lord, that sounds like it must have been amazing. great story, don't think I had heard that one from you.
No regrets over deciding last-ish minute to go to TVOTR tonight aside from the seemingly overcrowded room that I may not have technically ever entered.

Phish does a great cover of Golden Age.

In "fuck it" mode - flying to the Big Easy w/ Jen to see two Billy Strings concerts of the 3 they are doing down there to end the year - Dec. 29 and 30. Can't wait. They end each year with shows in New Orleans, I think, is their tradition.

Wolf Like Me is such a great track. My favorite local band, Wolf-Face (an homage to Teen Wolf) cover it at every show.
Some of their other tracks include:
I Wanna Be a Homo(sapien)
Give Me a Keg of Beer
Boof Ain't Too Loose
With or Without Boof
Still Golden
Owen is a Dracula
Howl Alone
Dog Whistle
Keep Your Chin Up Little Pup
There's Two Wolves Inside of Me. Why Are They Both Dicks?
Put Me in Coach. On Second Thought, Go Fuck Yourself
