Holiday Gift Ideas
Mother-in-Law is asking for gift lists, and I have no good ideas. What are people asking for, or things you have bought that I might like? I am asking for a new air compressor that someone posted a couple weeks ago. Mine is a plug in and the wiring is finicky, so I love the rechargeable idea.
I'll also accept gift ideas to get for the wife and kids.

I always ask for Mack Weldon socks (Silver line) and Tommy John underwear.
I also will never turn down Vuori shorts or pants.

I have moved on in my life from "things" to "experiences". Trying to encourage folks instead of stuff to plan gifts of something we do together. Concert, Sporting Event, Cultural Event, Cool Meals (cooking something together), course learning something (cooking class), stupid fun thing (Ax throwing, curling, etc).

Since we're going to Italy on New Year's Day, it's a lighter Christmas than normal (we usually go pretty hard in the Christmas paint). Note: we used to use Amazon for wishlists, but since you can no longer add external non-Amazon items, we have moved to Moonsift. It has a Chrome plug-in.
My list is mostly books and a few tshirts that fit me in my new size. I was also contemplating just asking for a pair of Blundstones. Does anyone own a pair?
These are the books, mostly fiction thrillers and mysteries:

I love this idea, M-I-L doesn’t. She shows love through gift giving, and she likes quantity and physical items. It was a problem when the kids were little, tons of toys and crap they never used. Always asked her to give 10% what she gave, and put the money towards college funds. Instead, I’m now paying for college and gave away or threw out monster piles of crap. We’ve asked for event type stuff, but it doesn’t fill up the space in front of the tree.wlu_lax6 wrote: Tue Nov 19, 2024 12:43 pm I have moved on in my life from "things" to "experiences". I could use a chef knife, thanks for that idea Keg. Anyone have good recommendation? I’m still using the knife set we got as a wedding gift, time to up my game. And I keep laughing at the idea of giving my wife a titanium hammer.

I've had the same Wusthof one since 2006 and won't replace it until I have no choice. If she's weird about returns too, I'd hold a few before picking which one you want.

I have a pair of Blundstones that I really like. My one complaint about them is that I ordered them big (to accommodate thick/warm socks) for a winter trip we took last year and there's maybe one day a year in Tampa where I'd need boots and thick socks, so I don't get much use out of them.garyclark wrote: Wed Nov 20, 2024 9:34 am Since we're going to Italy on New Year's Day, it's a lighter Christmas than normal (we usually go pretty hard in the Christmas paint). I second the Wustof knives. I have a chefs, paring and their "Super Slicer" which I use for both bread and meat like brisket, etc.
I would like expensive whiskey.

I use a 10" Cuisinart Chef's Knife that I've had for years. Wustof and Henkel's are good. The Sybian wrote: Wed Nov 20, 2024 9:45 am I could use a chef knife, thanks for that idea Keg. Anyone have good recommendation?
Agree with the recommendation to go to a kitchen supply store and try out a few, to feel the weight/balance.

One of my favorite experiences in Japan was going to the knife district and trying out different knifes in the hand.

1. That 4th-5th grade age where they're post simply loving toys but pre-loving clothes and shit is the most impossible girl age to shop for.
2. Anyone have good recs for beanies/toques that are kinda light and breathable, so if you have the type of hair that's fucked after a hat you don't have to chose between looking dumb and sweating?

1. That was the easy age for my daughter, lots of soccer jerseys, but at that age the attractiveness of the player was as important as the skill in choosing a name/number.mister d wrote: Wed Dec 18, 2024 2:09 pm 1. Totally Kafkaesque
Re: Holiday Gift Ideas
I've got a Reebok Pens toque that must be at least 10 years old (Vegas Gold logo) and a Reebok Steelers toque that is much older (must be of almost legal drinking age, I think it was from one of the early BR seasons) and they both perfectly match those conditions. Is Reebok still in the business of making non-league branded toques?

And we've gotten mileage out of experiences, like tickets for Broadway shows or sporting events or concerts.

She's refusing to go to the Rangers game with me on Sunday and not for the reason you'd expect. Got spooked by the crowds at the Rockefeller Center tree last year and now avoids event type stuff to the extent she can so that wouldn't be a very good gift.
