The about to be 2025 thread

Post by rass »

Drinking too much sangria at the Portuguese bar up the street while they rearrange the place for their $150 a head party later, but it’s a super pleasant time with the girls and my wife. The oldest is planning a “rager” over the summer.

Hopefully I can make it through the PSU/BSU game and it’s fun. Midnight meh.

Real problem with sangria is what to mix with it when you get home.

Gummy I guess?

Vapeasarous.

About to head to one of my oldest friend’s house to hang and watch football. We’ve covered a lot of this state in the last five days (and I’m going back to Dallas for a bowl game Friday) and really wish we were staying home tonight, but it’ll be a blast.

Forever thankful for this site and hope y’all have a safe New Years!

Missing out on a party a few blocks over that makes for a worse tonight but far better tomorrow. Making vegetarian chili as is the irish tradition. Will now have my last first beer for a while.

Now 9pm and I'm spent. Going to be a normal early night.

Went to a new hot pot place in town with a couple neighbors…that is the extent of our festivities. Will spend the rest of the evening parked on the couch flipping through the various network NYE broadcasts. Mountain time = great for sports; not great when you know the ball dropped in NYC two hours prior.

Happy New Year, Central time zone!

We're on deck over here.

Question: do you have any traditions for the holiday? Growing up and according to my sister back east, it's all about the Chinese food. These days there's nothing specific. I really miss east coast Chinese food. Or West it's just not the same.

What's your recipe? My 8 year old decided to be veg and chili is her favorite thing. I tend to make it with black, navy, and white beans, garbanzos and then a few forms of tomatoes, tomato paste, and then a little liquid smoke, garlic, s&p, NM red chile, maybe some chipotle, oregano, cumin and such. She complains if I add too much nuance, but I'm forcing her to develop some taste because it's her favorite and I made it for her. :)

I was out before 10:30, probably closer to 10:15. Just better that way.

Also making chili today with the older one. Roasting a jalapeno on the stove for the first time, which I think is the real appeal for her (although she does like chili and asked if we could make it a while ago).

At 11:59 last night our xFinity internet and all its services went down (apparently xFinity cable TV did as well). The estimated restoration times have gone from 1:30a, to 3:30a, to 5:30a, to 8:30a, to 10:30a, down to 9:40a, and up to 9:50p tonight. It currently sits at ‘as soon as possible.’

This is making me realize I need to upgrade my NAS to be accessible via the Plex app on my Apple TV(s). I can manage the content via my laptop, but the hole in my HT network integration is it relies *way too much* on the internet. Digging out physical copies of DVDs is what we’ve done this AM, but IDGAF about watching ‘High Fidelity’ or ‘The Commitments’ for the 9th time. Most of our DVDs are in storage (our current DVD players are a PS4 and a PS3).

So yeah, not a fan of the new year so far.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It’s not the west per se that’s the issue. It’s places that don’t have a significant Asian population, which is particularly the case in the flyover states. You can get excellent, authentic Chinese food in the West Coast cities.

Spent most of the day shopping for a "new" car. Decided on getting a Kia Niro. Almost got a car for the youngest. When we told her she started crying. Unfortunately, there was a check engine light and they couldn't get a reading on their machine. But this may spur her to get her license now.

No recipe on the chili, just kinda threw some trinity vegetables in because that’s what we had plus garlic and beans and seasoning. It wasn’t a result I’d intentionally shoot for again. I think I need to start using dried chilies to give it some decent richness/body.

I was looking at upgrading to that Plex Pass. I just need to download the Plex app to my MacBook and then map it to my NAS, and then spin up a server and then locate it via the Apple TV Plex app?

How does Plex for MacOS differ from Plex Media Server for MacOS?

Is it just that you can do more with the latter (and it's exclusive to Flex Pass members?)

instead of our usual NYE at a friends (scotch, cigars, gummies, food, pistols) ended the year at home on the couch w two kids, one sick (rsv, pneumonia, ear infection) other just doesn't want to sleep
tried to time Star Wars to midnight (exploding Death Star) missed it by 30 seconds.. oldest was out at a party after blowing up (left his meds at school, has gotten progressively worse) apologized on hsi way out, that peace didn't last even to halftime of the arsenal game
dry jan lasted about 12 hrs.
very busy month ahead -- @Giff -- will be heading your way in a couple of weeks

did get two long walks w the doggo (and the younger boy in the morning) and a lifting session in today though, so there's that. oh and i made delicious mushroom risotto and leg of lamb.. so ate pretty well.

The free vs. plex pass aren't that different. Plex pass just gives you some added features (downloads so you can watch/listen offline and then ability to tweak transcoding and some other settings. It goes on sale periodically, but if you're only sharing locally I wouldn't bother.) Just having an account allows you to access what ever free shit Plex has and access any shared Plex servers that you have access to. In order to access your stuff you have to have the server running.

And yes, you create an account, DL the server app, point it to your media, have Plex DL the metadata, then log in to your account on the web/tv/phone app and all your media is there to enjoy.

I have all my video media on my old gaming rig and then an old laptop running a separate server for music as the indexing in Plex app isn't easily limited and looking for things was a bear. I bought a Plex Pass a few years ago when it was on sale and love it for being able to DL stuff for trips and I think the PlexAmp (their music app) is pretty amazing in how it puts mixes together and otherwise allows me to delve into tunes I'd not find if I was simply putting together things to listen to manually.

The bolded is the kick in the pants I needed to get back into the Plex environment. We had an internet outage of over 16 hours yesterday. Keeping content on a HTPC makes a ton of sense for those future outages (and otherwise). I’ve got a 2017(?) 21.5” 4K iMac that I recently retired since it was no longer in the MacOS update path. I’ll wipe it and then dedicate its (1 TB) of HD space to media and then spin up a server. If all goes well, I’ll attach a NAS to it down the road.

I’ll do the month-to-month during the buildout and then go year-to-year if all goes well.

Thanks!
