Brazil has to reassess. Their league plays a dirty style where everything is a foul. They have gotten used to playing this dirty.

The NY Post blew it on the headline today. "Das Boot." Lame. Should have gone with Kroos Control and a picture of Kroos celebrating on of his goals. #hireme

If Kroos had scored all their goals, sure.

I call it a draw.

The Sybian wrote:WTF just happened? I had the game on my iPod, but was working and not really paying attention. Saw the first goal, and lost connection to my server. Got back on and rebooted the Watch ESPN app, had to sign in with cable provider... caught Khedira' s goal. Wow, 2-0. Look up at the score, HOLY FUCK!

I listened to the second half on the radio driving home. Listening to JP Dellacamera was like going home again. As much as I love Sir Ian Darke, and I love him more than I love love, JP is still the voice of US soccer to me. JP and Ray were convinced that Ozil purposely shot wide at the end of the game when he had an easy goal? True?

So, it looks like Fred is not going to win any popularity contests. Why did they only take out their frustration on Fred?

I think Ozil finishes that under different circumstances, but I don't know that he consciously made a decision to miss that shot. Hard to articulate, but just the fact that he took the shot at the top of the 18 said something to me. Apparently one of his players was screaming at him for not scoring.

And I don't think Fred was being singled out or will be the one to take the bulk of the blame. Just so happened that they put him up on the big screen (for some odd reason.)

But back to Sybs overall WTF just happened point.

People give Macca a hard time, because his analysis can be kind of thin, but boy was he all over the Brazilians from early on about their lack of desire to play defense.

With the stakes on the line in that game... that performance was truly baffling. I know that it's idiotic to compare the US effort and scoreline, completely different circumstances. And I know that but for a superhuman effort from SecDef Howard we could've been on the wrong end of a similar scoreline against Belgium, but... BUT...

A US squad would never give up that much space in the middle of the park like that. And we might be flying around like idiots, but at least we would've been flying around. At least Jones, Beckerman and just about everyone else would have been FOULING the shit out of the Germans. That's what I couldn't believe about that game... Where was the heart?

To me, it's one thing to go down in flames, but scream and yell and gnash your teeth. Even if just for show, for cripes sake.

One of the pillars of hatred against Mexico is how they reacted to losing to the US, highlighted by Marquez trying to snap Cobi Jones in half in Korea. But you know what, at least they let their fans know that they gave a shit.

I don't even know how those guys show their faces in Brazil for a very very long time after that performance.

Sorry, I know I'm pretty much talking to myself at this point, but something's been bugging me... I had this nagging feeling that I had a really similar personal experience, I just couldn't pull it.

Game 7 loss to the Penguins in 2010 playoffs. I was at the Verizon Center for that game. The series had been amazing up to that point, with Ovechkin and Crosby playing out of this world, and multiple OT winners for both teams.

Game 7 was going to be EPIC!

By somewhere in the 2nd period Caps were down 5-0. Totally deflated, not skating... debacle.

I'll never forget that feeling. Just total shock and utter disbelief.

Yeah, that sucked, but nowhere close to the Pens loss. That Rangers series just never felt right. By the time game 7 rolled in, the momentum was so clearly in the Gers favor.

But the Pens series, we'd just won on a Steckel OT goal... Just a completely different vibe going into that game.

sure but they started in Brazil, they watched the Brazillian league as a kid. It's now in their mentality to tackle and flop. The Zico generation never flopped. The Ronaldinho generation began to and now Neymar is just a flopper.

And for some reason this group of Brazillian players were psychologically weak. They turned their backs and not watching the Brazil-Chile shootout. They hold up Neymar's jersey during the semi's national anthem. They simply didn't have confidence in themselves.

Hopefully better than the dreck they served today. Ugh.

A while back, I remember reading an article suggesting that they should do the tiebreaking penalties before the game (or maybe before the extra time). That way, the teams know who has the tiebreaker in hand, so one of the teams has to spend the game avoiding a tie instead of playing for it.
And his one problem is he didn’t go to Russia that night because he had extracurricular activities, and they froze to death.

Seems silly. Tiebreaker should only be last resort.

The team winning the pregame shootout would just park the bus.

How would it be different from any game where a team is leading by 1?

I like the idea in theory, but it would make extra time somewhat disjointed.

Well, if both teams have the same number of goals after 90 minutes, it's already a tie. So that would still work to do the penalty kicks before the extra time.

Having the final tiebreaker come first does seem silly. But it would be just as valid as having them after, and lead to a more entertaining competition.

Agreed. Today's game was pretty brutal. I'll be rooting hard for Germany in the Final, in large part because I'd like to see a team that has actually shown an ability to play an attacking style win the Cup. Apart from their 3-2 win over Nigeria, where neither team played too much defense, Argentina is only averaging 1 goal per game for the tournament. Germany, on the other hand, has scored multiple goals against everyone except France and the US (although, admittedly, both their goals vs. Algeria were in extra time).

It would be very similar to a game where a team is leading by 1.

But I think that is usually the most exciting situation in soccer (a team up by 1), especially in extra time.
