People who think running the government like a business is a good idea need lobotomies.
It's all fun and games until you're paying $12 to send a letter in the mail or you're pulling out your credit card to pay firefighters when your house is on fire. FREE MARKET, BABY.
The problem with all of this thinking is that the average American sees a rich person who made a bunch of money and thinks "OMG! SUCCESSFUL PERSON!" and when you realize *how* they became "successful" it was utilizing every business loophole imaginable to maximize profits -- especially fucking over people like them.
All you gotta do is take a few business classes and you realize just how easy it is for corporations to become wealthy. And when you find out that the only thing that matters -- making money -- trumps things like morality and ethics, everyone suffers and it gets demonstrably worse.
So sure, government run anything is, at times, inefficient. But it's a fuck of a lot better than being at the mercy of shareholders who demand infinite growth forever.

I think the important thing for Americans to remember is the gov't programs that the GOP and the new gilded age seeks to strip away are the very programs that helped them get rich in the first place.Johnnie wrote: Thu Jan 02, 2025 6:22 pm People who think running the government like a business is a good idea need lobotomies.

Seriously. Why isn't that a bigger story? Certainly not for a lack of evidence or cause so I'll guess we'll have to wait for Jack Smith's book, if he's even allowed to publish it by then.

Large media corporations are capitulating. Social media billionaires have already capitulated. Shit, Democrats are capitulating. So the only stories that are going to matter are distractions like "annex Greenland, Canada, and the Panama Canal."Jerloma wrote: Sat Jan 11, 2025 10:52 pmSeriously. Why isn't that a bigger story? Really looking forward to seeing which of his petty whims get executed first after inauguration. Maybe having Liz Cheney and some random trans kids publicly drawn and quartered.

Democrats are really just another corporate party, but without direction. Biden just gave the Pope the medal of freedom.
Maybe after they lose a few more elections AOC can lead a real progressive party in 2036

Going to be real fun when Democrats furrow their collective brow when military members are deployed on American soil and are ordered to kill migrants seeking asylum.
I'm sure they'll just appoint some other old, cancer-stricken rep to a commission that goes nowhere.

Re: We Doing This Shit Again? (Trump Admin Meltdown II)
It's been a known fact Smith would be resigning since the election was decided; why would it be a story now? We're over 10 years of Trump, the candidate, getting away with everything with every single outrage being a collective shrug of the shoulders for voters. Mueller, Garland, Cheney, Smith -- nothing they did changed voters' opinions -- there is a lot to criticize about them but expectations were pretty high and they seemed qualified and competent before they started. Trump controls the judiciary, the media narrative, and social media narrative. Pretty much the only play now is to let him and his buddies fuck up the country so much that voters somehow notice and turn on him (or at least his party if he ever dies), and record every thing so historians have a lot of material to study when we're all dead.Jerloma wrote: Sat Jan 11, 2025 10:52 pmSeriously. Yeah, but did anybody seriously think 4 years ago that the DoJ wasn't going to make all of the traitorous shit a priority? I know we've become far more disillusioned since then but that would have seemed implausible to me after 1/6.

Re: We Doing This Shit Again? (Trump Admin Meltdown II)
It took old school Republicans about one week to get over that, and the fact that .00001 % of Americans are transexual athletes who play sports was a bigger story before the election than the attempted overthrow of democracy says everything you need to know about who controls the narrative, and I don't know what anti-Trumpers can do about it.Jerloma wrote: Sun Jan 12, 2025 7:20 pm Yeah, but did anybody seriously think 4 years ago that the DoJ wasn't going to make all of the traitorous shit a priority? A better country would have settled all family business on 7 January because we watched literal treason happen live on TV, but nah.
This country is going to get to reach its final form because of Biden's presidency. The chumminess of everyone during Carter's funeral confirms it.

Not sure what Biden's presidency has to do in this scenario with the Republicans in the Senate on Jan. 7, 2021 not providing the additional votes to impeachJohnnie wrote: Sun Jan 12, 2025 7:35 pm A better country would have settled all family business on 7 January because we watched literal treason happen live on TV, but nah.

Merrick Garland is a piece of shit. Fuck that guy.On remand from the Supreme Court's decision in Trump, the district court set a litigation schedule whereby the parties would submit briefs regarding whether any material in the superseding indictment was subject to presidential immunity. ECF No. 233. The parties were in the middle of that process when the results of the presidential election made clear that Mr. Trump would be inaugurated as President of the United States on January 20, 2025. As described above, it has long been the Department's interpretation that the Constitution forbids the federal indictment and prosecution of a sitting President, but the election results raised for the first time the question of the lawful course when a private citizen who has already been indicted is then elected President. The Department determined that the case must be dismissed without prejudice before Mr. Trump takes office, and the Office therefore moved to dismiss the indictment on November 25, 2024. See ECF No. 281. The district court granted the motion the same day. ECF No. 283.
The Department's view that the Constitution prohibits the continued indictment and prosecution of a President is categorical and does not tum on the gravity of the crimes charged, the strength of the Government's proof, or the merits of the prosecution, which the Office stands fully behind. Indeed, but for Mr. Trump's election and imminent return to the Presidency, the Office assessed that the admissible evidence was sufficient to obtain and sustain a conviction at trial.
