My local cable package gives me access to Canal+ epl coverage. They have the nice option of just turning off commentary and only having crowd/game noise. It’s a really nice way to watch.

No doubt. phrases like “asking the questions” became better versions of “helping his own cause” especially when uttered by people with accents like Ian Darke and Steve McManaman.garyclark wrote: Thu Jan 16, 2025 6:08 pmI love the commentary in most cases. One thing I don’t think will change is the British interviewers asking the most loaded and impolite questions.

The actual "co-coms" guys don't seem as bad about that.govmentchedda wrote: Thu Jan 16, 2025 7:41 pmYes but...DaveInSeattle wrote: Thu Jan 16, 2025 7:10 pm"Shambolic" will always be my favorite...cerranoredux wrote: Thu Jan 16, 2025 7:08 pmNo doubt. phrases like “asking the questions” became better versions of “helping his own cause” especially when uttered by people with accents like Ian Darke and Steve McManaman.garyclark wrote: Thu Jan 16, 2025 6:08 pmI love the commentary in most cases. Re: EPL 2024-25
"Sixes and sevens" is another great one. Some of the individual phrases are great. But I just love the parlance in general.
I feel like the average football announcer reminds me of the great baseball play-by-play guys who have done their homework and are very well-prepared. Which is too rare in US sports coverage.
I don't watch much studio coverage apart from Peacock, which I think is very good. And I don't hear many Smoltzes during the in-game coverage. There are definitely a couple of them, but maybe it's that they don't talk as much so it doesn't bother me? Not sure.

I love Lee Dixon, driest of dry wit. I find when he is talking about how the fans used to be, it’s usually self-deprecating, not harkening back to the good old days. I love when they used to pair home with Graeme LeSaux as a double color commentator and they would rag on each other.
As for British terms I love, shithousery and going in for the ol’ argy bargy take the cake

Re: EPL 2024-25
There was a question into the friday MIB podcast a few weeks ago, asking how much Lee Dixon and Jon Champion hate each other. Roger explained that they didn't hate each other, it was just the old classic English tradition of "taking the piss".The Sybian wrote: Fri Jan 17, 2025 9:49 am I love Lee Dixon, driest of dry wit. I heard that podcast and was surprised, because I always thought they seemed like legit friends. Dixon and LeSaux I think legit hated each other in their playing days but have a mutual respect and give each other stick. Mostly Dixon giving it to LeSaux, but it’s with some love.DaveInSeattle wrote: Fri Jan 17, 2025 11:22 amThere was a question into the friday MIB podcast a few weeks ago, asking how much Lee Dixon and Jon Champion hate each other. ETA: when Rog explained the British piss taking dynamic, he said it’s not done in America. But that’s exactly how my high school friends communicate, and to a lesser degree my college friends. And I see a lot of it on this board. Hell, my daughter and I are jokingly abusive towards each other, and she was 100% worse to my father. Nothing better than watching her go on a roasting rant ripping him while he laughed harder than I’d ever seen him laugh.

Yeah, soccer is the one sport where I absolutely wouldn't turn off the sound. I've learned far too many terms in the past decade that I absolutely love. Just like banging my toe on the counter and yelling "I've picked up a knock" and dumb shit like that.

Re: EPL 2024-25
I avoid it, but realized I used argy bargy. My mom called as I was finishing Arsenal v Tottenham (she already watched). When Lewis-Skelly took his time leaving the field and a shoving match broke out, I said, “looks like they are going in for the argy bargy.” Didn’t even realize I did it until my mom asked what the hell I was talking about. At least in was watching footie at the time.mister d wrote: Fri Jan 17, 2025 12:14 pm Yeah, soccer is the one sport where I absolutely wouldn't turn off the sound. Newcastle's two worst performances of the season have been against Bournemouth.
Sometimes they just have your number, I guess. Truly disappointing performance.
