The Germans bring up a good point. Their history lessons in primary education require teachings of the Holocaust and the Nazi era. No whitewashing (no pun intended). They teach the horrors (I’m assuming) in an age-appropriate manner. Those who make the decision on it being taught feel that despite that era being its country’s worst actions upon humanity, this is necessary to know so it doesn’t happen again.
Compare that with here in the US. Slavery is our national original sin. Putting aside the horrors of slavery, it was one of, if not the most, dominant force in our nation’s history. State borders are literally drawn as a result of it. But instead of teaching it, in so many areas of the country, primarily red areas and in the south, choose to downplay it. Think of DeSantis saying slaves gained valuable skills. Even if he was doing it to pander to his base, which is what I suspect more than he actually believes it, the audience he said it to wants to think it.
I’m really curious why this is. Is it because Germany is more considerably less ethnically diverse than the US? They choose to take responsibility? Or is it that those in the south with a connection to slavers through their ancestors don’t want to admit that their ancestors did evil? I don’t know why? Is the century of white oppression of blacks in the south post Reconstruction so poisoned their thinking?

I don't have time to type out a long response, LJam. I can't speak to the German experience.
But if you just go back and look at Daughters of the Confederacy and the overall effort to erect Confederate "hero" statues throughout the South about 30-40 years after the Civil War and the corresponding propaganda that sprung up around this time, you will know everything you need to know about the through line of whitewashing in America.
I think folks think that the controversy around the Confederate flag and the bullshit about the war not being about slavery popped up in the last 2 decades. It has been going on for ~140 years at this point.

Yeah, we've done a terrible job holding ourselves accountable for slavery and educating our citizens on it. It's just not a deterrent.L-Jam3 wrote: Tue Jan 14, 2025 11:10 am The Germans bring up a good point. Their history lessons in primary education require teachings of the Holocaust and the Nazi era. Beyond that, we're only 250 years old and don't really have any fascism/tyranny in our history, plus a constitution specifically designed to protect against it. Sure, we can look at Europe and really pretty much anywhere in the world to learn those lessons, but I just think we're too damn brazen to think it could happen here despite the blatantly fascist/tyrannical rhetoric of the incoming administration.

- Freedom of religion leading to liberal interpretations of the bible used to justify ugly impulses and enforce power structures (the curse of Ham, Genesis, etc)
- A culture and society that materially benefitted from slavery. Tough to admit that your whole society was based on the enslavement of ppl, especially when one is still reaping the generational wealth and benefits.

I honestly believe that he just looks at a map and sees Canada higher than LA so thinks that's where the water goes cause gravity.Trump: When I was president, I demanded that this guy, the governor, accept the water coming from the north, from way up in Canada. And, you know, the north, it flows down through right through Los Angeles. I mean, massive millions and millions of gallons of water a week, probably, I think, even a day. Massive amounts coming out from the mountains, from the melts. And even without it, even during the summer, it's a natural flow of water. They would have had so much water they wouldn't have known what to do with it. You would have never had the fires. People would have been able to sprinkle their lawns and everything else. You know, the problem is it's so dry. It was always so dry there. And it's just it's just a mess. They could have maintained their forests.

If it wouldn't be so bad for so many, Biden getting the Peace Prize with Trump in office might stroke him out.

Germany lost the war and was occupied by their enemies. They had to accept all sorts of penalties, and they surely needed to show contrition and accept guilt to keep those penalties to a relative minimum. Absent that, I'm not so sure they'd have been quite so forthright about their sins for all these years.L-Jam3 wrote: Tue Jan 14, 2025 11:10 am The Germans bring up a good point. In the US, the slaves never won a war against the US. Obviously the Confederacy lost the Civil War but we had to then try to reunite the country in a way that didn't have to happen in Germany. (Quite the opposite, as we split it.) And while the Union was against slavery, they weren't really too eager to let the newly freed slaves have too much say in things.
Totally Kafkaesque

The inauguration date is fixed to the 20th. MLK Day is observed on the 3rd Monday in January yearly. It's just a coincidence.sancarlos wrote: Fri Jan 17, 2025 3:35 pm Anybody else think it’s weird that the inauguration is scheduled on the date of a federal holiday?

Yes, but it wouldn’t have been much of a problem to have moved the inauguration to the 21st this time around.Johnnie wrote: Fri Jan 17, 2025 3:38 pmThe inauguration date is fixed to the 20th. Other than the Constitution, I guess. When the 20th falls on a Sunday, a private ceremony takes place for the transfer, and the 21st is the public ceremony.sancarlos wrote: Fri Jan 17, 2025 3:46 pmYes, but it wouldn’t have been much of a problem to have moved the inauguration to the 21st this time around.Johnnie wrote: Fri Jan 17, 2025 3:38 pmThe inauguration date is fixed to the 20th. On a scale from 0 to 100...with 0 being nice and sane, and 100 being complete batshit lunacy, where is Trump's inaugural address going to land? About 750?
