Watching the UCLA/Rutgers game on Fox Sports 1 and we’re pretty sure (we rewound to check) Rafferty just suggested a UCLA player was going to “bounce himself to ecstasy”.

Gonzaga ran into an Oregon State team last night that was making just about everything they threw at the basket (they shot almost 60% from the field), and lost in OT. Of the 5 games Gonzaga has lost this season, 3 of them (West Virginia, Kentucky, and Oregon State) have been in overtime.

For as good of a point guard that Ryan Nembhard is, (and he's really good), he just doesn't take over games at the end. It's frustrating.

Gonzaga cannot play perimeter D. Santa Clara was lights out on 3 ptr's last night.

When was the last time a pair of stud basketball players were projected to go very high in the first round (#2 and #3) and said team fails to make the NCAA Tournament?

Of course I'm referring to Ace Bailey and Dylan Harper at Rutgers.

sigh

The oldest’s birthday is today and we drove down to take her out to lunch and the pub was full of decked out RU and U Mich fans. We momentarily entertained going to the game but the cheapest tickets for two seats next to each other were $75 each plus whatever fees SeatGeek was going to add, and the kid wouldn’t have been sitting with us (she would have picked up a student ticket).

So we’re watching from the couch.

Harper is hurt again and Bailey is having a bad game after killing NW the other night.

Baylor down 21 to Kansas and ends up winning by 11. Spent halftime wondering if they’d be missing the tournament this year.

While I'm happy they are having a better-than-expected season, MI is not playing as well as their record suggests.

Teams have figured out that taking out the twin tower pick and roll of Wolf and Goldin turns them into a very shaky offensive team. They are decent on D, which has kept them away from getting run by some of the not-so-great teams on the schedule. Purdue spanked them in what I think is closer to their reality right now.

I went to a college basketball game! Saturday!

Was in Richmond seeing my college roommate and we went to VCU/Richmond. Rivalry game that was even more lopsided than the Duke/UNC game. VCU just humiliated Richmond (which, makes sense since VCU is second in the A10 and Richmond is second...to last). But even so...it was 44-13 at halftime and Richmond's A:T ratio was... 1:11. That's right...1 assist and ELEVEN turnovers. Short of 8-year-old basketball I haven't seen an A:T ratio like that in my life.

In any event, with right matchup, VCU in the first round of the tournament will be a handful again. Same swarming defense, good shooters and they do have some ability around the rim as well.

Was having a text conversation with my Hoosier friends about the news that Mike Woodson is stepping down as IU coach at the end of the season. One of my friends said "IU fired Kelvin Sampson saying 'we don't cheat', and now they are talking about going after Bruce Pearl". Not sure why Pearl would leave a good thing at Auburn...other names brought up were Brad Stevens, Dusty May, and Chris Beard.

Supposedly IU has a ton of money in NIL funds to buy players...

MI fan base has been talking about locking in Dusty May for over 3 weeks. Well before the Woodson announcement, folks were worried about him having a tough time turning down a chance to turn the alma mater around.

The MI NIL and brand is compelling, but I can see an IU guy wanting to come back to Bloomington and resurrecting the program.

The reality is that Indiana BB is a blue blood in name only. Michigan can offer more money and more importantly more NIL money. Indiana BB is going to become one of those jobs like Nebraska FB - a ghost of itself.

The fan base is so delusional. Pearl is never leaving Auburn until he retires and his son takes over. May and Beard are possibilities. I don't ever see Stevens getting back into coaching

They really need to grab someone like May. A coach that has been a winner at each level.

The huge difference between football and basketball comes down to numbers. All you need in basketball is one good portal/recruiting season to flip 3 or 4 roster spots and you're in business.

Christ, Michigan this year is a great example. 3-17 in the B1G last year and they're now a half game back of a regular season title.

In football, you have to have 22 guys. You can make big moves and upgrade at various spots, but it usually takes 3 seasons (at least) to turn a mediocre squad into an actual contender. I think Indiana football is a good example of that. The team was teetering around being a decent squad for many years. New coach and some good recruiting finally moved them past #CHAOS into a top tier team.

What the hell does a NBA gm do all day? Rosters don't churn. Seems like they could get the job done in about 3 weeks a year. Id definitely check Stevens particularly with ownership unknowns

I’ve wondered that too. It’s certainly not as time intensive as a coaching job. They probably keep an eye on every team in the league for trade and free agent info. And I guess there are regular roster changes due to injuries,10 days, G-League roster, etc, but I doubt it requires constant 40 hour weeks. But certainly a ton during off season free agent times.

Lots of scouting. During the season, there is a G League event every team goes to and some GMs will go out on the road for in person college scouting, particularly if they have higher picks. Some GMs also have other front office duties that are not on-court related.

Of course I'm referring to Ace Bailey and Dylan Harper at Rutgers.
We went to what was likely our only game of the Dylan Harper/Ace Bailey era last night. They played Iowa (side note, the only prior RU MBB game I went to was also against Iowa two years ago when my kid had a visit with the track team as a jr), ran up a nice lead heading into the second half and then went pretty cold on the offensive end and couldn't get a stop when needed on defense. The Dembele kid killed them late, and he's from NJ so great job there.

I think Harper has been more fun to watch on TV, but in person you can see how big and long and smooth Bailey (...) is. Wasted opportunity this season.

Sliced to order prime rib sandwich was pretty great, and $18 including a bag of chips was a relative deal.

Seton Hall sucks. But UConn's played down to their competition all season, and well, UConn's not particularly good either. McNeeley is gone after this season (top 10 pick in the NBA draft). Karaban was the 5th option on last year's championship team, and his game does not translate to being the alpha dog on the floor. He can make players around him better, but this team doesn't have good ball-handlers. Their wings haven't developed much in the two years they've been at UConn (Ross and Stewart). They thought Mahaney could come in and take a solid chunk of minutes at PG. Nope. He's completely outclassed at this level of D1 ball. Joey Calcaterra or a Cam Spencer he is most certainly not. Swing and a miss. Still, Hurley (ever the smug bastard he is) is owed a mulligan after he sent 7 players to the NBA the past two seasons (and won b2b national championships in the meantime).

Today's loss was freakin brutal.
