Nova Scotia 2, Sweden 0 in the first period.
My enthusiasm for this event has gone from "nice, they've fixed the all-star game" to "oh baby that's the good shit" real quick. Like right around McDavid-to-Crosby-to-McKinnon one minute in.

Sweden shifted the momentum for most of the 2nd period but that Crosby guy is not bad.

I bet Sweden +210 just bc that’s where the value was. So I’ll take 3-3 with 10 mins left.

I wonder how long it would take Roberto Luongo to get ready to play?

Canucks need to be running Adin Hill out there instead. Been half a decade since Binnington played in a big game.

If they do this 4 Nations (or more if they can have the Czechs and and a good team to replace Russia) thing instead of an All-Star game moving forward, this would be no doubt about it the best ASG in sports. That USA-Canada game was fun as hell, and this is coming from someone who basically only watches the New Years Day game and then the playoffs.
My avatar corresponds on my place in the Swamp posting list with the all-time Home Run list. Tied with Mel Ott at Number 25 is Miguel Cabrera at 511.

They're not, it's going to be All-star game in odd years and Olympics/World Cup in even years.

The NHL wants 8 teams for the World Cup in February 2028. However, they didn't talk to the IIHF about it, so how are players going to be released mid-season from European teams? And which 8 teams? Is it an invitational for NHL players only? Qualifying? Made up teams?

Eight teams would be tough for all the reasons mentioned. Czechia and Germany make six. What to do about the Russia issue? And there is no obvious 8th team (Swiss?), especially if you don’t include the European leagues.

If it's an NHL tournament (i.e. World Cup), you need at least 23 NHL players from each country playing in the NHL. Finland barely makes that cut. I think there's one Finnish defenseman in the league who isn't on the Finland team. I don't see a World Cup being any more than six teams (add. Russia and Czechia).

Finland also has three injured defensemen who would have made the team if they were healthy.

Still cutting it very close. I don't even know if there are enough Czechs to fill a squad right now.

ETA - if quant hockey dot com is to be believed, there are only 4 Czech D in the league right now. 8 goalies and 16 forwards. If you can't get players from other leagues (and why would/how could) you for a non IIHF tournament, I don't see how this expands.

The US can rest some guys who might need it, with a good conscience, since the game is now meaningless for both sides.

If I’m not mistaken isn’t there only two “extra” spots for skaters? I mean yeah rest whoever but there’s not a lot of guys to rest.

True, but you can also “rest” to a lesser degree by limiting ice time.

4 teams is fine. If Russia ever gets its shit together (not fucking likely) drop the Finns for Russia.

In 2027 they should run it back but play all the games in Stockholm and Helsinki. (Again, not likely but would be cool).

You guys are just drilling too far deep. Only three states have more than 30 players in the NHL (Minnesota (46), Michigan (36) and Massachusetts (33).

And as much as I love Paul Cotter no one wants to see him as as a third-liner in a major international tournament with the worlds eyes on it.

In the summer? Sure, maybe! Get nuts if there’s a demand but this 4 Nations thing is a real chance to reach out to people other than hockey nerds.
