Re: We Doing This Shit Again? (Trump Admin Meltdown II)
Thanks guys. I gotta thank my therapist for this one. I talked about feeling helpless to fight Trump, but she pointed out that I have some power to make change at work. Literally walking from my appointment to the car, one minute later I get a call from an HR Director wanting to cancel Black History Month and a Women's Leadership Conference. Felt great talking her off the ledge and standing firm. Then I sat in on a bunch of webinars on how to maintain DEI programs in the face of Trump. Like I said, thrilled my company leadership is onboard.Steve of phpBB wrote: Fri Feb 21, 2025 4:19 pmThis. Watching company after company roll over sickens me. All DEI programs are pretty generic and ineffective, FWIW. Great intentions and perhaps a little progress but it's always been first and foremost a way for rich, whites to feel better about themselves. I work for a very left non-profit and our DEI program is basically the Equity & Justice committee (of which I'm the token, white, cis, hetero male) that meets once a month. Try to spread some awareness and a few culture-centered engagement events, but it's not like we have a say in hiring or pay equity or choppers flying into airplanes for fucks sake.
Our client-base is majority Hispanic/Latino and 80% on Medicare. 30% funded by fed grants. Good times.
Do you work for a law firm or are you a lawyer for a manufacturing company?

I'm Employee Relations at a medical diagnostics company. Combo of R&D and manufacture everything from home COVID home tests to $10 million diagnostic machines used in hospitals. Weird combo of scientists and life science environment, then manufacturing plants. Such completely different types of ER issues.Jerloma wrote: Fri Feb 21, 2025 6:53 pm Love that, Syb!

Most DEI is generic and ineffective, but I've seen some really incredible programs, mostly at the law firm I worked at prior to this current job. They put a ton of money and effort into it and hired a highly paid Director of DEI. I had a couple non-binary employees come to me to thank me for the incredible welcoming environment (I had nothing to do with the DEI initiatives, but it's always nice to hear positives). We even hired a DEI consultancy to help is review our policies. The level of details of miniscule shit they found, like removing "he or she" and replacing with "they," but gender non-conforming employees said it meant a lot to them that we took the effort to change it, so great! Firm was based in Silicon Valley with a large SF office, and that was very much the vibe, even in the NYC office. We had huge, high-end catered lunches and after work events for all sorts of cultural events and educational talks, and they got huge attendance. There was an Islamic attorney group that threw a great event for some holiday, Lunar New Year party, black history events, and people loved it. Again, they brought in top notch culturally authentic food for all of these things. Probably part of the reason they had to lay off 10% of their staff, including me... Not really, they were almost exclusively a technology industry firm and all of them took huge hits.

The mid-terms are going to be "interesting" for the GOP.

There will be mid-terms. The GOP will use all the fuckery they can, and suppress the vote, but there will be elections.
Thankfully, one huge difference between the US and the countries we think about as "going fascist" is that we have a long proud history of elections. Even the comfortable white people won't be okay with giving them up.

My concern is the GOP are controlling the formerly apolitical oversite of elections. I'm sure we will have elections, I don't trust that they'll be fair.Steve of phpBB wrote: Thu Feb 27, 2025 1:23 pmThere will be mid-terms. My wife sent this to me a few minutes ago...
U.S. Department of Education Launches “End DEI” Portal
WASHINGTON – Today, the U.S. Department of Education launched EndDEI.Ed.Gov, a public portal for parents, students, teachers, and the broader community to submit reports of discrimination based on race or sex in publicly-funded K-12 schools.
The secure portal allows parents to provide an email address, the name of the student’s school or school district, and details of the concerning practices. The Department of Education will use submissions as a guide to identify potential areas for investigation.
“For years, parents have been begging schools to focus on teaching their kids practical skills like reading, writing, and math, instead of pushing critical theory, rogue sex education and divisive ideologies—but their concerns have been brushed off, mocked, or shut down entirely,” said Tiffany Justice, Co-Founder of Moms for Liberty. “Parents, now is the time that you share the receipts of the betrayal that has happened in our public schools. This webpage demonstrates that President Trump’s Department of Education is putting power back in the hands of parents.”

So, yeah, I'll just assume that when he starts his day, he imagines the ways in which he can be an even worse person than the day before. Right?
Seeing that spectacle, their disrespect for a guy fighting for his life, the contempt for an ally, kinda broke me today.
What's worse is that I'm absolutely certain things will get even more unhinged, more dangerous, more hurtful to anyone not in their circle of wealthy sadists.
I dunno, man- today just ruined any shred of hope that I was clinging to.
