Re: Gene Hackman
An American icon. I think he’s one of everyone’s favorite actors with such a long run from The French Connection, through Superman, Hoosiers, Mississippi Burning, and one of my guilty pleasures, Crimson Tide. (Such a great pairing with Denzel).
Lived a storied life befitting a great actor.

"Superman" actor? I mean yeah, but the AP went with "Oscar winning".
And his wife was only 63. At best something unfortunate occurred.

If you guys haven’t seen The Conversation now would be a good time to do so.

Kinda wild that the first response I saw to that was Oiler's brother.

The French Connection, and The Conversation were my favorites of his. No Way Out was fun, too.
eta: should also mention his role as Warren Beatty’s brother in Bonnie and Clyde.

Re: Gene Hackman
Looking at those roles in totality, he had a fascinating career. There was something about the way he made asshole characters charming that was uniquely Hackman.

The only movie channel we had growing up was The Movie Channel (which I thought for sure my Dad was going to get arrested for because I knew we weren't paying for it) and that station showed No Way Out all the time. Very underrated movie, IMO.

I only remember the limo bang and the ending of No Way Out.

Royal Tenenbaum's is such a great movie...and Hackman is great in it.
Re: Gene Hackman
Pretty sure if that was set in present day, the movie would be like 9 minutes long.

While I really like this movie (it was one of the last times non-Crazy Sean Young was around to enjoy), but...
During one of the chase scenes in DC, Costner's character bolts down the stairs at the Georgetown Metro station. Boo.

Re: Gene Hackman
I need to see it again. My HS friend was a production assistant on that movie, and took me to a pre-screening, haven’t seen it since. He had so many incredible stories from working on the film and getting to interact with the cast. He said Bill Murray is everything you want him to be.DaveInSeattle wrote: Thu Feb 27, 2025 12:30 pmRoyal Tenenbaum's is such a great movie...and Hackman is great in it.
I count 9 Hackman movies I’ve seen, and a few more I’m not sure about. Never seen Hoosiers or French Connection. I really need to to watch FC one of these days. College roommate used to quote Hoosiers, so I feel like I’ve heard enough.

Yeah, Hoosiers is fantastic. No Frogs should have not seen that one.

Re: Gene Hackman
Hm. Can that really be right? He's been in so many.
A couple of weeks ago one of the classic movie channels was honoring Hackman for his 95th birthday. So I finally saw French Connection for the first time, along with a couple of other more obscure ones.

An old HS buddy of mine has an uncle that had space in an airport hangar in California where he chartered flights. Gene Hackman had a plane in said hangar. They became friends, and my buddy actually got to meet him once. Gene made a point of asking how my buddy was doing in the USN after HS. By his account, he was a genuinely good guy.

I went through a 70s movie phase back in college and particularly remember loving The French Connection and The Conversation. I loved movies back then when you could hear all the footsteps and what not.

Re: Gene Hackman
Once again, law enforcement talking out of their asses in a completely unnecessary way. Just STFU until you have solid information. Even then, STFU until you are ready to file charges. And even THEN, I think the way prosecutors and other LEO are allowed to hold press conferences and name suspects publicly is one of the biggest issues with our entire Justice system.
I honestly don't know why more folks don't talk about this. Why is that allowed?
Anyways, from a CNN article (the document is the search warrant:
The investigation found no immediate signs of a carbon monoxide leak or natural gas leak, according to the document.

He was friendly w Gene Wilder and asked if there was a small part he could play because he hadn’t been in a comedy. The blind villager was a part they expanded for him. The “I was going to make espresso” was ad libbed.
