Happy 311!
There are gonna be a bunch of retrospectives over the next few days about what we've lost over the past year, and think pieces looking ahead to loss and struggles to come as we try to get back to" normal". So what better way to lighten the mood today and to give ourselves something to look forward to a year from now and each year thereafter than celebrating with "the Beatles of rap/rock"*.

Re: Happy 311!
A quick search says I somehow never mentioned this here. One of the few things we felt safe-ish doing last summer was a specific beach (Bradley) close to where we'd normally do day trips, and we learned we had to get there early to avoid a parking mess. This was probably the earliest we arrived so we had tons of spots and I intentionally didn't take the best one. My oldest asked why I skipped it and caused her another ~8 feet of walking and I said "that was spot 311 and 311 sucks" and that was it. We get to the beach, set up, go in the water and walk a bit and come back and see another family has set up a bit in front of us. The dad, who much more reasonably could have been from 1995 than 2020, was wearing a 311 baseball cap.
The end.
The end.
Re: Happy 311!
This guy I work with is a HUGE 311 fan, whenever the subject of music comes up, it's all he talks about. He listed some other bands he really likes and it was all I could do to not laugh out loud. I wish I remembered them all -- it's like Sum 41, Linkin Park, etc. You can imagine.
I didn't like him at all before learning that, because he's a tremendous asshole, but that didn't help.

That type of guy either LOVES the Chili Peppers or basically doesn't know anything before the mid-90s exists.

It took me years to learn that 'Higher Ground' was a Stevie Wonder cover.mister d wrote: Thu Mar 11, 2021 9:31 am That type of guy either LOVES the Chili Peppers or basically doesn't know anything before the mid-90s exists.
Does this double as a Fukushima commemoration thread? It's been 10 years.

Re: Happy 311!
Sorry for vandalizing your thread, rass. I thought that Fukushima should be acknowledged, and this thread seemed more appropriate than, like, the Nostalgiaganza or the lacrosse thread.
To bring this back on topic, when I worked at the radio station in college, I listened to the first 311 album and I remember liking it at the time. Listening to a couple of songs now. They kind of sound like Helmet, right down to the over-tightened snare drum. I can see why 1993 bapo liked this. It's fun!

Re: Happy 311!
I'm pretty sure I enjoy 311 more now nostalgically than I did when they first broke (senior year of college). I think their singles are fun in a "ha, remember when this shit was popular" kind of way.
I have memory* of listening to one of their songs, loudly, while sitting in a drive-thru at the Brownsville Rd McDonald's during a trip to see my grandma. Not entirely sure why that stuck.
*was going to write "a pretty vivid memory" but I had in my head that it was Love Song and that wasn't released until 2004 and my grandmother left Mount Oliver years before that

Re: Happy 311!
I never heard anything after that 1993 album. I remember being surprised a few years later when they became kinda big. (I had the same feeling when I heard people raving about The Flaming Lips, who were just a fun novelty band when I listened to them.)
Re: Happy 311!
There was a yuuuuuge disconnect with actual Flaming Lips fans and the MTV-bred fans of theirs after “She Don’t Use Jelly.” They’d already released like a half dozen psychedelic punk albums prior to that. Most unlistenable, but it grew the cult.bapo! wrote: Thu Mar 11, 2021 11:41 am I never heard anything after that 1993 album. I remember being surprised a few years later when they became kinda big. Sorta like Ween. By the time people recognized them on MTV for “Push the Little Daisies,” they were already building a cult following with some weird ass shit before it.

Re: Happy 311!
Saw them in concert in maybe 2017 and they haven't aged. Seriously. Nick Hexum looked as young as he did in the 90s. Only their crowd aged. It was a fun concert.

How do you all get your death notices since I left?
Re: Happy 311!
I feel like the urban legend about 311 was one of the earliest internet rumors that I'd ever heard. You know, that they were all KKK members, because K is the 11th letter of the alphabet, and there's three of them.

Re: Happy 311!
I know I'll get roasted for this take, but I find their cover of "Love Song" as pretty good. Maybe not as good as what Adele does with it, but decent enough.
