Re: College Visits
Youngest has been getting mailings from schools this week with the wrong last name, the first letter swapped with one of the ones next to it on a keyboard. She signed up for some sort of portal for a college fair at her HS a couple of weeks ago and we’re convinced she misspelled her name.
She got her (relatively uncommon) first name right!

Kids these days, man.

This is like when one of my grocery cards changed the O in my last name to a U and made a common name just sound gross.rass wrote: Fri Nov 15, 2024 1:09 pm Youngest has been getting mailings from schools this week with the wrong last name, the first letter swapped with one of the ones next to it on a keyboard. Re: College Visits
Very distracted today....messaging from the boy's top choice school was decisions for early action will come out "no earlier than 7pm this evening". Glad he kept doing essay work for the other schools as they all have Jan1 due dates if today does not go in his favor.

Re: College Visits
Yeah that one didnt go so well for the girl last week (deferred) but she got three other admissions to engineering programs so pressure is off. Unfortunately she is acting like it and next week is exam week. Early admissions is like regular admissions these days

Anyone driven from Harrisburg to state college pa? Looking like weather and not quite sure what I'll be driving or whether I'll be routed over mountains. Looks like the road follows a river so Im guessing valleys but yuk. At least she won't want to attend

Re: College Visits
I did that route at least once into Boston, because I remember seeing Beaver Stadium multiple times. I don't remember much about it, but I don't remember there being any issues. No wether to deal with at that time, though, and I think there are probably hotel options.
Edit: No, looks like I would have missed Harrisburg on those. Thought it was further upstate.

Re: College Visits
School visits? My son applied to Penn State (Main Campus) and got accepted for a 2+2 program, where he’d have to do his first 2 years at Harrisburg then transfer to State College. Took a tour of Harrisburg, and it was by far the worst campus I’ve seen. They gave everyone a $10 voucher to what they called a cafeteria, but it was more like a 7-11 with pre wrapped sandwiches, hotdogs on heated rollers and an enormous selection of bags of chips and bottled soda. And a nasty looking salad station. That was the only good option on campus.HaulCitgo wrote: Wed Feb 12, 2025 2:25 pm Anyone driven from Harrisburg to state college pa? I thought my son was going to cry. We planned on walking around or seeing the town, but he was begging to go home ASAP. Dorms were actually pretty nice. More like apartments with 4 single bedrooms sharing kitchen, living room and bathroom. And that was a freshman dorm. Downside, it’s not a shared hallway and the tour guides said you don’t meet people in the dorms, everyone stays in their apartment. My son’s friend was excited when accepted for a 2+2 at Penn State until he realized his first two years were at a campus with 900 students and no on campus housing options. Primarily a commuter school. We never bothered to visit State College after that.

Re: College Visits
Yeah, delving back into my D3 nerd frame: PSU and Pitt have really extensive networks of schools like PSH-U all over the place and as you state they are full of commuters, for the most part. Glorified JuCos, but with a nice/solid path to getting to State College.
Hard, for me, to justify doing that if you want any kind of solid overall experience. Not a bad way to go if you are more concerned with $$ and just getting that degree.
(PSU-H is one of the very few soccer teams of that ilk that are any good. Most of those teams, when not playing each other are absolute ass. Not quite USVI U17.. But some come close. Many of the them struggle to field full rosters.)

Daddy daughter time is excellent but using a seat belt cutter in a frozen river not so much. Recall a post with Steve's wife having to rescue him. Not such a great valentine
Re: College Visits
I've driven this a few hundred times at this point. It's very scenic. They do a good job of plowing/salting at least one lane except for one exception. Just go slow. There are no detours or other routes worthwhile to avoid the mountains.HaulCitgo wrote: Wed Feb 12, 2025 2:25 pm Anyone driven from Harrisburg to state college pa? When are you making the trip? There are a few traffic cameras. Seven mountains is the exception and will be the worst portion. It crosses at a high point on one of the ridges. Can be raining at the bottom and snow with 0-visibility at the top.
Reach out if you have any specific PSU questions. The smaller UP campuses are having some budget challenges and I expect some will close in the next few years. Syb is right about PSU-H. But it may be an option to keep costs low or if admission to UP doesn't happen.
Re: College Visits
This weekend. Engineering admissions event. Think we'll be ok Friday night but early sunday looking hairy. Definitely reply with any to do's for a 18yr old and dad... or really any info at all. Know nothing about the school or the region so it's all new to me. Saturday program is better part of the day but otherwise just looking around and hanging around.

I have a first year planning to go into Chem Engr. I think he applies to the major next year.
Top choice would be Men's Hockey. Playing well and have games fri/sat with Notre Dame. Games are a good time. Men's basketball is terrible and at home on sat. I actually have box seats. Lacrosse is at home. Outdoors, but they may move it indoor.
I'd take a walk downtown as well. Start around the family clothesline on college ave and then loop back on beaver ave. That will give you multiple places for shopping and bar/food. My current choice is antifragile. Great beer and a tiny place. All they have are cheese steaks for food, but they are excellent. Tavern and allen street grill is good, but pricey. Corner room, Brothers, ottos(not downtown), champs are other good options. Waffle shop on north atherton is fantastic for breakfast.
You flying out of Harrisburg? If so it's across the street from the PSU-H campus.
Re: College Visits
Thanks! Need her to find out the deal with major. I'm sure they'll tell her this weekend but does she still have to apply for her major within the engineering school? A couple programs seem to have admitted her directly into a major. I'd feel like it's a set up to flush kids. I could never but she works harder than I ever did so maybe. Can't imagine being a black girl in an engineering program. I'd need study partners and without knowing I already know.
Re: College Visits
Right... you get in and still need to get into the major later.HaulCitgo wrote: Wed Feb 12, 2025 4:51 pm Thanks! Need her to find out the deal with major. If you apply to a specific college some will be harder than others. Engineering & Business are the hardest. It still doesn't get you in the major. If you want the best chance to get UP for campus is to go DUS and apply for summer start. My kid did summer and applied for engr.
We did tours of UVA and Va Tech. He applied to Pitt and Carengie Melon. Didn't really like either and wanted to stay close to home. He's a homebody. Add in our employee discount and he was all in for PSU...

So the first acceptance is in. Only an 11% acceptance rate for instate regular decision at Shirely U. So that is nice. An yeah in state tuition. 12 days until the Ivys, 6 days until one of the small Nescacers, 18 days until most of them.wlu_lax6 wrote: Thu Dec 12, 2024 7:53 pmDeferred....fuckwlu_lax6 wrote: Thu Dec 12, 2024 2:08 pm Very distracted today....messaging from the boy's top choice school was decisions for early action will come out "no earlier than 7pm this evening".
