Amazing effort. Heartbreaking to think his dad died unexpectedly three weeks ago.

Why is the color of the kid's skin relevant?

Re: A Track and/or Field Thread
Because hs track is oddly segregated. More so than other sports. I could believe that there might be some generalized race related physical attributes that favor distance or sprints but with my kid it's been entirely white distance and cross country athletes (was one guy on a 4x800 leg) and entirely black sprint teams. Very few Hispanics and Asians period. So while I wouldn't think it that surprising that a black kid runs a fast mile... likely even given the east Africans success internationally. Same with a white kid that runs a fast 100. Im sure it out there but I have never seen it live in the kids meets. And apparently in that kids case it hasn't been done before.

yeah it seems like that article was focusing on a first time thing, but the headline focused on race probably heightens emotions.HaulCitgo wrote: Mon Jun 12, 2023 11:00 am Because hs track is oddly segregated. When the exception proves the rule: Matthew Boling.
And, yeah, it's pretty weird given the Kenyans success that American track and field would be segregated like it is. Question, though? Is that really down to coaches, or is there something more subtle going on. Like... Maybe it's not "cool" to run long distance?
With soccer, I get (totally) the socio-economic factors there. But with track... it's not like there aren't concentrations of track teams in heavily black populated areas in the US. Access isn't the issue... or is it?

Re: A Track and/or Field Thread
I'd say definitely social. At lot of those kids just having fun vs trying to make it. Not much future in track. And track teams are huge and meets are long so lots of hanging with your people.
Also I missed rass track coach drama but every single track coach I ever met has been questionable. Like why do they let you influence children questionable. Like you not on your shit questionable. Like take that shit off the internet and do whatever real talk you deem necessary in the middle of the oval questionable.

The school that kid goes to is $22K/year....school where Baron Trump went.
and that 4 minute high school mile is a small club (and the festival of miles was a FAST race)

Why has that mark been hit about 10 times from 1960-2021 and then 10x since 2022. Odd statistically. Fast pace I'd say. Dude got fourth sub 4

faster tracks
Better training of high school kids (year round specialization)
Re: A Track and/or Field Thread
The mile isn't typically run at high school (or college meets). It's often run with the sole intention of getting some fast, possibly sub-4, times.
BTW, there were two really good black middle/long distance runners at my son's high school. Both went on to run at Davidson.

Hate being that guy, but racewalking is fucking stupid.
My avatar corresponds on my place in the Swamp posting list with the all-time Home Run list. Tied with Mel Ott at Number 25 is Miguel Cabrera at 511.

Over 20K I bet drawing the lines at the corners can make a difference. But figure they would have measured with one of those wheel on a stick things.Steve of phpBB wrote: Mon Oct 30, 2023 2:03 pmOff by 3K in a 20K race?wlu_lax6 wrote: Mon Oct 30, 2023 12:38 pm measure 2x, cut once Pan Am Games.

I know for the Olympic running course they paint a line that the racer stay to the left of. You could see that line all over Pittsburgh for years after the Olympic trials (2000 maybe).

Re: A Track and/or Field Thread
While I agree... My freshman year, this little dude challenged me to a race walk and I was like, whatever, I'm an athlete and you're a 4'9" nerd.
Dude smoked me. I would've dusted him in a regular race, but there's something about the technique that just blew me out of the water. Very funny and very humbling.

Re: A Track and/or Field Thread
Why at this point in the elite track and field events and modern uniform sublimation are they still using safety pins to put on race numbers/etc. Couldn't they just have that thing sublimated onto the uniform and if there is some small gps/rfid thing in their come up with a tiny device to attach to the shoe or uniform.
