Re: The Great Goals thread
So now we are celebrating scoring on a one-arm goalie? Just kidding, that was impressive.

Thierry Henry does a great job getting the ball down - without using his hands!

Did you see that ludicrous display last night?
Re: The Great Goals thread
Goalie's fault or defender's? I'm gonna say about 60/40 the defender's fault for playing a ball like that back to his keeper.
Totally Kafkaesque
Re: The Great Goals thread
Ima say good job pressuring a nothing play and turning it into a goal. Think he got a deflection on it and im assuming if the goalie would have seen that he could have just caught it. Hard to say. Hard to blame keeper even though it looks crazy. Probably could have stepped up and hit it on the volley or short hop but I wouldnt want much to do with either of those options. But yeah not quite sure what pass he was trying to make.

That's actually a really good question. Let me break it down.Shirley wrote: Wed Feb 21, 2024 11:15 am Goalie's fault or defender's? I'm gonna say about 60/40 the defender's fault for playing a ball like that back to his keeper.
* - Fucking ridiculous pass from the defender. In no world should you be launching a 50 yard, lofted pass to your goalie. Let alone doing it where it is directed at the goal mouth or even close. Most teams (defensive players and goalies in particular) are coached that if you need to make a long bail out pass, look for the keeper outside of the sticks, so if anything goes wrong GK can let it go out of bounds or bang it out for a throw-in.
That pass was higher level stupid. And for that reason, that due gets 50 percent of the blame.
* - Way too many goalies lose their fucking minds with the "new" back pass rule. I know that early on with the rule, I would do really reckless things on back passes to avoid awarding the other team a free kick.
Here's the thing: If the goalie picks up the ball, or handles it, the worst case scenario is an Indirect Kick from that spot (there are more specific rules inside the 6 yard box, but whatevs.) In other words, the risk reward for Blake here is giving Saprissa an indirect kick from about 16 yards out (regardless of the yards, the point stands.) Or he can fly by it trying to... Hip the ball? I don't really even know what his plan was there. But if he goes out and smothers it... Fine. Indirect kick. It's REALLY hard to score an indirect that close in.
So, I'm giving Blake 50 percent... And almost feel like giving him 60... But the pass was so fucking dumb, I'll leave it at shared blame.
(And before anyone starts with "that would've been difficult to smother"... Sure, I guess. But goalies are trained on smothering all types of shit and at a minimum he could've gone down and deflected that ball, if his mind wasn't stuck on "DON'T TOUCH IT WITH YOUR HANDS!!")

Re: The Great Goals thread
For his sake assuming the spin off deflection made his effort look worse once he got caught in between. Training staff needs a fungo

Re: The Great Goals thread
Yeah, I see that deflection (good catch, I didn't really see it on first watch).
I still have to wonder why Blake couldn't get a better angle and/or do something more standard there. Goalies, by instinct/training, don't like to leave their feet unless really necessary. It's like in basketball when you're face guarding. Second you leave your feet you've lost the ability to adjust.

Re: The Great Goals thread
Not sure he did just trying to cover for him. Surely wasn't in front trying to play it. Drifting body block probably not the play.

James Ward-Prowse with the Olimpico against West Ham. Now...did he mean to do that? Or did it just get caught up in the wind and go in?

I mean, great play from Jesus, but, yeah... That's U15 shit right there. No one stepping on the ball and forcing the ref call it a dead ball and set the distance.

Exactly. Every U15 game, a girl stands in front of the ball until the ref moves her.Nonlinear FC wrote: Wed Sep 25, 2024 2:33 pm I mean, great play from Jesus, but, yeah... That's U15 shit right there. No one stepping on the ball and forcing the ref call it a dead ball and set the distance.
