The Isle of Dr. Moreau is my favorite film involving Kilmer (Top Secret isn’t bad though).

Real Genius and Top Secret were staples of the high school VCR.

Did you see that ludicrous display last night?
Re: Val Kilmer
Aw shit. I was flipping channels and watched the last 30 minutes of Tombstone about a month ago in a ski hotel with my son. Man, he was so great in that.

"Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" is awesome. You should watch.

Re: Val Kilmer
Yup. This and The Salton Sea are very underrated performances.
That said, I'm long overdue for a Heat rewatch, so will have to do that soon.

Tombstone is a favorite.
And the movie is a mess, but his performance as Jim Morrison in "The Doors" is amazing. He spent a year learning how to sing like Morrison, and performed all the songs.

I didn't care for it as much as I thought when I rewatched.Giff wrote: Wed Apr 02, 2025 8:35 am

Re: Val Kilmer
Funny, I was thinking I need to rewatch it because I didn’t like it when it came out. Saw it in theater and I just remember being bored and annoyed by Pacino, who I loved. Been hearing it mentioned a lot lately as a great movie, so maybe I missed something or just wasn’t in the mood. I do remember being really excited to see it.

'decent movie with outstanding cast' is the bucket I put it in

This is exactly how I feel. I was right in the middle of my big Pacino fandom days. The Sybian wrote: Wed Apr 02, 2025 1:11 pmFunny, I was thinking I need to rewatch it because I didn’t like it when it came out. It's been a while since I've seen it, but the whole storyline with Pacino's wife/step-daughter could have been dropped. The Sybian wrote: Wed Apr 02, 2025 1:11 pmFunny, I was thinking I need to rewatch it because I didn’t like it when it came out. That being said, the movie has grown on me over time. I thought it was slightly above-average when it first came out. Now, I like it a lot.
Also, I read Heat 2, which Michael Mann co-authored with an accomplished writer. I loved the book, and they're making it into a movie.
Re: Val Kilmer
He made a documentary 3 or 4 years ago (called "Val", i think it might be on Prime?) that was a pretty interesting look at his perspective on his career, his reputation, and his gradual progression of loosing his voice from throat cancer. For a movie someone made about their own life, I thought it was decently balanced, and a bunch of cool behind the scenes video he had shot himself throughout his life.

Re: Val Kilmer
I was living in Chicago when the movie was released, and it was back in the days of "Movie Phone". My room mate called to find out the showing times, and started laughing about how the Movie Phone Guy say "HEEEAAAAT". Became a running joke for a long time.garyclark wrote: Wed Apr 02, 2025 5:12 pm That being said, the movie has grown on me over time. I thought it was slightly above-average when it first came out. Re: Val Kilmer
Today's Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast was all about Val Kilmer. So they had Will Forte and John Solomon talking about him and MacGruber. The story of Val living with Will and the other story of him jogging with Will were worth the listen.

1000 percent. I love the movie, but that entire aspect, which I think was meant to humanize him, was just annoying.DaveInSeattle wrote: Wed Apr 02, 2025 1:27 pmIt's been a while since I've seen it, but the whole storyline with Pacino's wife/step-daughter could have been dropped. The Sybian wrote: Wed Apr 02, 2025 1:11 pmFunny, I was thinking I need to rewatch it because I didn’t like it when it came out.
