College Visits

I dunno, when they move away to college, you gotta worry about them falling in with the wrong crew.

That's great, and great that he asked.

We visited Marist, Rider, Arcadia (PA) and Alvernia this week. She was supposed to see Monmouth today with my wife but (see the SwampMD thread). I think Arcadia is off the list, it just wasn't a fit (the campus used to be the estate of a sugar baron - what would become Domino Sugar - so it had some really neat buildings including a literal American castle) but the others are all possibilities.

Spent spring break walking more than I have in years. Did a tour of Michigan, Western Michigan (for Brian) and University of Illinois. Throw in a tour of Trine the week before and it was quite the travel week.

She really liked UIUC and UofM. Trine is still up in the list too. Did not enjoy Western. Next on the list are more school related visits instead of the big tours. Purdue and probably Ball State. Another visit to UofM and UIUC.

Big props to the schools if they give her money to march in the band.

I was a 49 year old dude and it was like 6AM but I really liked Illinois when I ran through campus when we were out there last fall. Though the Marching Illini declare themselves "THE NATION'S PREMIER COLLEGE MARCHING BAND" which seems like a presumptuous thing to stick on the side of a van.

My daughter was briefly interested in Arcadia because of the castle, but when we saw the student enrollment, she was convinced the castle is the only building on campus. Good move rebranding and changing the name from Beaver College.

It's Georgetown's School of Foreign Service for the boy. Figure in 4 years when we have to rebuild the foreign service my son will be graduating at the perfect time with that skill set.

So the boy finally got past his nerves and emailed the lightweight rowing coach. Got a response hours later and met the coach at the boathouse (my sons high school team and club team row about of the same place at Georgetown so. Coach was excited about him, told him the standards he needs to hit to make the team, and put him on the recruit text chain. Not buying Georgetown rowing gear yet, but kid has a chance for d1 experience.

That's awesome. I have a friend who's son rowed at UW for 4 years (won the Nat'l Championship his senior year). It was crazy intense.

Interesting section in there about W&L and D3 being a great mix for a student-athlete, as opposed to D1 where the social and academic stuff is more difficult to balance. (I know... duh... Still interesting from his perspective.)

You mean the college publication read by alumni and prospective students tells how good it is at the school? Okay but it really is that good at W&L.
