It’s weird he could go 100 deep without repeats and I can still come up with a dozen omissions that I would have been sure would make the list: Frightened Rabbit, Sufjan (which he said), School of Seven Bells, Okkervil River, Metric, Beths, Passion Pit (esp with phoenix included), Warpaint, Girls, Small Black, Woods, Baker/Dacus, Japanese Breakfast …

It’s funny, music from 2000-2025 seems like a small, homogeneous period of time I view as “after I stopped paying attention to new music.” Mind blowing that it’s the same amount of time from 1995 -1970. That feels like numerous radically different eras of music to me.

The further out we get, the more I’m convinced they’re severely underrated in terms of being top tier american greats.

I think the problem is their commercial success came off what I’ve heard fans say are their worst albums. Shiny Happy People and Stand are just fuckawful irritating bubblegum pop. People whose taste I trust say they are a great band and I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt. I liked Losing My Religion, not sure I know much else from them.mister d wrote: Thu Apr 10, 2025 12:06 am The further out we get, the more I’m convinced they’re severely underrated in terms of being top tier american greats.
ETA: Shit, I know a lot more of their songs! My bad. Just never got into them, but yeah, lots of commercial hits.

Re: Getting the spins
The issue many of us have with REM is that we had that one friend that really REALLY wanted to tell us how great REM was because they knew about them before we did and that's a thing certain types of people do.
So fuck REM.
(Not really, just fuck the 2 or 3 ppl in my life that were insufferable about a band that was pretty good but could also be annoying as fuck, especially when they overplayed songs like the ones mentioned and It's the End of the World to the point you wanted to punch a wall when it came on the radio.)

Was big into REM in HS (right after my Ozzy/Sabbath period) but gave up basically at the Shiny Happy People mark, though Automatic For The People has some fantastic songs.

But I also stopped listening around Automatic for the People. Not for any REM-specific reasons, but because for many years I didn't have the money to buy tapes or CDs. I only started listening to the "new" (post 1992) stuff a few months ago. It turns out there's a bunch of good stuff there too, but definitely not "best band ever" material.

Shiny Happy and Radio Song are both really fucking awful. I know they were done on purpose, but unless the whole world is in on the joke and one doesn't become inexplicably popular, the joke doesn't work.
Re: Getting the spins
Its very possible my biases are showing and a U2 or Pearl Jam superfan would lose it reading this, but lets say every major band of that 80s/90s era put together a greatest hits album made up of all their most popular and well known songs and then a second album of their actual best songs that never blew up. I think REM would dominate the shit out of everyone.
(As a note, I don't believe this about all bands, its not like "oh my favorite bands popular songs are shit and the deeper cuts are the best". Bloodbuzz Ohio is both one of the very best and one of the most popular songs from The National. Alvvays consistently releases their best as the singles, same with Yeah Yeah Yeahs and probably most others. Maybe it was the MTV-ing of the era, but REM's best shit isn't their most well known and not because their most well known is the most accessible. A lot of REM's best and would be most popular songs never actually got out there as airwave saturating singles.)

It always took me a few listens to get into new REM albums. I think I was disappointed with almost every one at first. Very few of their songs were catchy.mister d wrote: Thu Apr 10, 2025 9:59 am Its very possible my biases are showing and a U2 or Pearl Jam superfan would lose it reading this, but lets say every major band of that 80s/90s era put together a greatest hits album made up of all their most popular and well known songs and then a second album of their actual best songs that never blew up. Re: Getting the spins
I might have been one of those insufferable REM fans. They're an odd band because they were pretty huge in the college radio days with their first 4 albums all being outstanding but getting very little national attention. That started to change with Document, and completely changed after that. But they also greatly changed their sound. They were still quirky, but way more radio friendly with actual lyrics that you could understand.
TBH, I never really got into the post-IRS REM albums even though they made them one of the biggest bands in the world. When I think of and listen to REM, its still always Reckoning and Murmur era REM.

I was definitely one of those REM fans. Heard "Radio Free Europe" on MTV's 120 Minutes and was sold...jangly guitars and three part harmonies are right in my wheel house. They were definitely my favorite band all through college.Shirley wrote: Thu Apr 10, 2025 10:37 am I might have been one of those insufferable REM fans. Their sound changed when they signed with Warner Brothers...for the Green album. And yes, "Stand" and "Shiny Happy People" are pretty lame songs, but Green, Out of Time, AFTP, and Monster are all great albums.
They really should have stopped after Bill Berry had to retire following his brain aneurysm.

Gave this a listen. Other than the two commercial hits I knew from that compilation, they had a different sound than I expected. Several songs had like a Rockabilly sound to it. I think I would have been into them if I was older and exposed to them early.sancarlos wrote: Thu Apr 10, 2025 1:43 pmSybian, this is a great compilation album that includes many of their best early songs. The Sybian wrote: Thu Apr 10, 2025 8:35 amI think the problem is their commercial success came off what I’ve heard fans say are their worst albums.
