Re: Grantland
Nothing against Garrett Morris, but when Chevy Chase was on SNL, he was the biggest star on the show, not by a small margin. He was in just about every skit, and he was awesome. Everything else he's done since then has been degrees of downhill. For him to lose is just revisionist history.
Guys like Belushi and Aykroyd bloomed more after Chevy left and was replaced by Bill Murray.

It seems like Chevy Chase hatred has breeds Chevy Chase hatred without people even knowing why they hate him in the first place.

Re: Grantland
From what I can gather, the case against Chevy Chase is that:
a) He's a dick in real life. Not disputing this.
b) He became a bigger star than he deserved to be due to having traditional leading-man good looks. This is true to a point, but still--are we now supposed to think the Vacation movies, Fletch, Spies Like Us, etc. weren't actually good?

I voted for Schneider. I made my picks based on how memorable a sketch or sketch was. I couldn't think of any Hooks skits that I remembered more than "MAKING COPIES"mister d wrote:Looks like Rob Schneider had a ton of free time yesterday.

Re: Grantland
I'll confess to finding "Makin Copies" funny. Otherwise, he's a waste of space.
Jan Hooks didn't have any real breakout success, but was a consistently solid performer, probably one of the best half-dozen female cast members the show has had.

Re: Grantland
I think I remember Schneider actually being funny on SNL. Maybe it was just that Making Copies skit. He's been crap after SNL, but that shouldn't count - just like Chris Rock's outstanding non-SNL career shouldn't count. Rock never did anything (other than Nat X) on SNL nearly worthy of his talents.

Molly Shannon winning over anyone is a damned disgrace. I loved Tim Meadows, but he was more of a straight man than LOL funny. I did listen to Molly Shannon on WTF, and have to confess I actually liked her as a person, and found her life tale sympathetic. She is a good story teller.
Mike Myers over Nora Dunn with over 98% of the vote. Sounds about right. I think the other 2% are elderly Palm Beach voters who were confused by the ballot.

I didn't know who to vote for in that one, but finally picked Shannon because of her NPR skits. Those were actually good.

Second round gets tough, particularly in the old bracket. If the seeds were set irrespective of years, a lot of folks in this group would be advancing.

Sandler vs Farley feels like when the tourney committee lines up two mid-majors to meet in the 2nd round.
Re: Grantland
The issue with Ladies Man or copier guy is that you knew the entire joke as soon as you saw the skit start. Same with the cheerleaders and same with Myers' mother-in-law. The gap between really good recurring characters (Hammond's Connery, Hader's Stefon) and those bores was "what will s/he say this time" versus tiring "oooohhh s/he's about to say it" catchphrases. When the joke is the character itself and not the words, its pointless.
(I want to include Bedelia as an underrated great skit but I fear that would undercut my entire argument here. (And also I find Nasim Pedrad incredibly cute.))

Re: Grantland
I can see that with "makin' copies" a lot more than the Ladies Man, but I get your point. When compared to the classic recurring SNL skits, I think it's too much of an afterthought.

I love Chris Farley, but I found myself making this argument about his "... that was awesome" skit. Then I felt sad.

Re: Grantland
Ferrell vs. Hartman for the title. I think that's a good final because these guys will be remembered for SNL more than any of their after/movie projects. I mean, I love Anchorman, but More Cowbell is clearly his most memorable moment. PLus "I drive a Dodge Stratus", the cheerleaders, Celebrity Jeopardy, on and on and on.
Murphy lost to Hartman, but that's OK, because Murphy became a superstar based on movies. His SNL stuff is great..but he's Axel Foley, Klump or hell, Donkey more than he is Buckwheat or Mr. Robinson - despite those being great as well. Phil Hartman is Caveman Lawyer and Bill Clinton.

Re: Grantland
Well, Ferrell still has more time to make more memorable movies unless his wife decides very soon to off him before killing herself. Plus, Anchorman is a pretty heavily quoted one, at least in my circles.

Absolutely, but I don't think Ferrell the movie star will ever shine so bright as to surpass the Ferrell on SNL supernova.

Re: Grantland
The fact that two guys from the 90s SNL made the final goes to show the age demographic of the voters. SNL's significance and influence were much greater in years previous.

Re: Grantland
Brutal choice to make in the finals. But I think I can picture Ferrell doing most of Hartman's stuff more than the other way around. Although maybe that's because he was pretty much doing Hartman when he had to be the straight man so that's to Phil's credit? Anyway, I gave it to Ferrell. ROBERT GOULAAYYYYYYYYYYY

Re: Grantland
People discount him because his post-SNL career didn't go so well, but I think a strong case can be made that Dana Carvey, based solely on what he did on the show, was the best cast member they ever had.
