Temporary K-Pop
Hyuna needs to either go solo or finish whatever she's doing and return to her group.
Because without her, her group has turned COUNTRY!!!!!
The long haired girl is Gayoon (White Team)
Although if Hyuna ever decided to dress like a cowgirl, that wouldn't be the worst thing.
-----
And if you have time to kill, here are the K-Pop Idol Olympics!
The women's archery is a must see!

Re: Temporary K-Pop
I actually had a real discussion about K-Pop with non-Korean civilians and it's weird how the pipeline for this stuff works. Not to mention they are all teachers at universities or otherwise. So not only are they teaching Koreans English -- at times using American pop culture for help with our idioms and slang -- but they are also informing them about how forced, manufactured, and superficial Korean Pop truly is. Their students, in their mid 20s mind you, are having their minds blown because when it's K-Pop, it's empty and cutesy. But when they actually have to translate the words, they are all shocked to learn that theese situations and words are a lot more explicit then they realize.
So Gangnam Style was the ultimate irony. A fat dude making original content that satirized the current stuff crossed over. I believe Scottie mentioned it in Ye Olde Nu-Swamp.

Yes that is what made Gangnam Style brilliant while the rest of this stuff is just fluff.Johnnie wrote:I actually had a real discussion about K-Pop with non-Korean civilians and it's weird how the pipeline for this stuff works. Re: Temporary K-Pop
I'm confused, the Korean's minds are blown as to how vulgar American pop culture is because K-Pop is so cutesy and watered down? Or are the non-Korean civilians shocked that the cutesy K-Pop lyrics, while seemingly cutesy and childish, are actually explicit when translated?Johnnie wrote:I actually had a real discussion about K-Pop with non-Korean civilians and it's weird how the pipeline for this stuff works. Here's her new song.
I can't believe she broke up with a giant male Hello Kitty character dressed as a late 1980's Compton thug. That song sounded so similar to something I can't quite place, Janis Joplin, maybe. I find that with a lot of K-Pop songs. 5 bars or so will complete remind me of something, but it's gone before I can place it.
Anyone catch the classic dance-off between Lee Hi and La Fa Yat? Classic rivalry for the ages.

Maybe I'm mixing a couple things together unnecessarily in my head and I can't translate it well. The Sybian wrote:I'm confused, the Korean's minds are blown as to how vulgar American pop culture is because K-Pop is so cutesy and watered down? K-Pop's tone is very lovey dovey and Disney in nature. K-Pop uses the concepts of Americanized situations mixed with English words they don't understand in this tone. It is then converted to Korean and placed on an American-ish pop beat. The performers you see are drones perfoming lines and concepts they don't understand for profit. The "new stars" of K-Pop are usually the current back up ones. When the current ones get stale, the "new stars" get called up.
The demographic they reach are the 14-29 year olds who live a typical Korean lifestyle. By that I mean "sheltered." So when actual American pop music (I include popular hip hop in this mix) is introduced in a class of adult Koreans learning English and our culture, our lyrics are things they've heard and said before, but they didn't understand. When they actually have to use a dictionary to translate what's being said and teh meaning, they are completely embarassed.
Non-Korean civilians are more shocked at the fact that Koreans have absolutely no understanding of what they are saying. K-Pop's influence is to blame for stuff like this.
Think of a toddler reciting Wu-Tang Clan lyrics in front of a crowd of non-English speakers. The toddler is getting applause. The audience is entertained. But both parties have no idea what the hell is going on. We as Americans are appalled, but everyone else is like "What's the big deal? MUSIC!"

Re: Temporary K-Pop
English lyrics in K-Pop make no sense, no idea why they even include them.
Even though I like to post songs of dancing girls, it actually makes up a small minority of all K-Pop songs.
There are a lot of ballads.
Here is today's Korea Billboard Top 50. There are very few fast songs and more ballads and soundtracks that actually make sense.

Re: Temporary K-Pop
So this is random. After participating in the CrossFit Open 13.5 thing up in Seoul Saturday, I learned that this guy, Brian Joo, is a member of the CrossFit gym. He's also on the cover of Korea's April Men's Health magazine:

Cool dude. He actually introduced himself to me at the bar later on and we chitchatted a bit. I didn't really pester him with K-Pop questions or anything. He's part of the circle of friends I've made in country, so acting like that seems a little too teeny bopper. But it is kinda odd to know a person that would appear in this thread. He's actually an American citizen and speaks both languages.

That's very cool. The K-Pop scene in Toronto blew up when he, G.Na and some others performed there.
Next time, maybe not ask him about K-Pop but in particular ask him about her! Probably the hottest body in K-Pop.

Not as catchy or comically original as Gangnam Style, but still a solid effort. However, it needs more ladies doing this:

I actually think the video for Gentleman is better than Gagnam Style. Love the double whammy on the ole seat pull prank.
Have to give him credit for the song as well. For a follow up, it's just about as catchy, without sounding cloned.

In the lower left corner, you'll see some Korean writing. The top line says "Ah-boo-ruh Kuh-dah-boo-ruh" which I took (being proficient in Konglish) to mean "Abracadabra".
And while I maintain that KPop is the noise equivalent of being shrunk with a ray-gun and being forced to live inside of a pinball machine, I believe this is what you are looking for:

Re: Temporary K-Pop
I think your description nails the genre. What I should have said, was I'd like to see a video of that chick writhing on the floor from that picture. Cause that picture was nice. I will say, that music video was the least horrible non-Gangnam Style video I've seen. While I didn't particularly care for the song, I don't think it was worse than anything Britney Spears has done. Not exactly a ringing endorsement, but it's just not my cup of tea.Scottie wrote:In the lower left corner, you'll see some Korean writing. The Junos have been in different host cities for the last 20 years or more. I don't give a wit about the Grammy Awards (or the Junos) but doesn't the Grammy show move back and forth from LA to New York alternately? At least it used to. What you're saying would make sense; a Jazz theme in New Orleans, Motown in Motown, Country in Nashville, Acid Ukulele in Hawaii, and so on.degenerasian wrote:I think this is a pretty good idea. Re: Temporary K-Pop
My favorite group, Koyote, is back!
Some background
3 member group (1 girl, two guys) who started in 1998. I discovered them as I was graduating University and as K-Pop was just starting to get popular in Asia because after 1997, Hong Kong music, which had ruled for 3 decades, died. These guys had quite a unique sound with pop, techno and disco.
I had the biggest crush on the lead singer Shinji immediately (she was 17). Had a huge poster of her. I guess I still have a crush, 15 years later! wow, I'm old! Her voice is very good and distinctive. When this new song came out, my friend let me listen on his phone and asked if I recognized it. For sure, I would recognize her voice anywhere. I nearly ripped the phone out of his hand. So while many K-Pop idol groups have gone on to bigger and better things and K-Pop has changed so much, these guys are still doing disco and making fun of themselves. They're not made-up or commercialized.
Here they are surprising a bunch of people camped out for a different concert. Who doesn't have a crush on a girl wearing a Kansas City Chiefs shirt.
And here's the video (Batman vs. Ironman dance-off)

Re: Temporary K-Pop

New Drama!
Historical, Romance and BASKETBALL!
That's right down my alley.
It started today, it's loosely based on the 1948 Unified Korean Basketball team that made the quarters in London. The only ever unified Korean team of any kind (in 1936 they competed for Japan and by 1952 they had split in two)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basketball_(TV_series" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)
Watch it here with English SubtitlesBasketball (Hangul: 빠스껫 볼; RR: Bbaseukket Bol) is an upcoming South Korean television series starring Do Ji-han, Lee Elijah and Jung Dong-hyun.
Set during the turbulent years of the Japanese occupation until independence, and a few years before the division of Korea into North and South, the story is about the first and last time that Korea had a single, unified national basketball team, which made history by advancing to the quarterfinals of the 1948 London Olympics. The drama follows the loves, conflicts, unity, and emotional victory of young athletes who cling to the sport as the bright spot in the darkness of their times.
http://www.viki.com/tv/20308c-basketball" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The show will air every Monday and Tuesday night in Korea for 12 weeks.
Here's the trailer. I couldn't find a subtitled one but you can pretty much guess what's going on.
Anyone giving it a try, let me know.
