Re: Worthy of mention, too obscure for own thread
Reggae legend John Holt who was responsible for many, many great songs - from rock steady of the original "The Tide Is High," to more "conscious" reggae like "Police In Helicopters" - has died at 69.

An old Isley Brothers tune, one of my favorites. I hadn't heard the John Holt version in forever. Haven't thought about Holt and the Paragones in forever.
Who knows? Maybe, you were kidnapped, tied up, taken away and held for ransom.

Rob Schneider would probably agree with that.

Raphael Ravenscroft
LONDON (AP) — Musician Raphael Ravenscroft, who played one of the most famous saxophone solos of all time on Gerry Rafferty's "Baker Street," has died. He was 60.
Ravenscroft's family says he died Sunday after being taken to a hospital near his home in Exeter, southwest England. The BBC said a heart attack was the suspected cause of death.
The bluesy eight-bar sax riff helped make "Baker Street" a soft-rock hit. It reached No. 3 in Britain and No. 2 in the U.S in 1978, and still receives considerable airplay.
But in a 2011 radio interview, Ravenscroft said "Baker Street" irritated him — because his solo was flat.
Ravenscroft received a flat fee — often reported to be 27 pounds (around $43 today) — for his work on the song, which made Rafferty a fortune...

People of less cultural import than Jack Bruce have gotten their own threads, but I'll drop him here, anyway. Great bass player, notable as player and singer for Cream.

Re: Worthy of mention, too obscure for own thread
My dog, Jerri, died this morning. She was almost 12 years old.
I let her out for breakfast. She ate all her food. Then, she napped in the sun like she does everyday and didn't wake up.
I wrapped her in a thick black plastic sheet and dug a German Shepard-sized hole. My wife and I lowered her into the hole while Zevon sang "Keep me in your heart." We then poured out some Heinekin for her (her parents were from Holland) and covered up.
Few humans get a better send off.

Thanks, y'all. She was a good dog.
Re: Worthy of mention, too obscure for own thread
Please add my condolences, as well. A good dog is a wonderful thing, and losing him/her is so painful.

Dude, it hasn't even been a week since Weatherman's dog passed. This is no time to mourn a person. Have some decency.*
*This is in no way snark towards Weatherman posting about his dog in this thread. Just a comment about how dogs are way better than people.

I'm really bummed out by this. I'm an avid Car Talk listener. In fact, I usually fall asleep while listening to podcasts, and more often than not it's Car Talk. One downside to falling asleep to Car Talk is being woken up by Tom's laugh because it can be a very piercing and sudden sound.Steve of phpBB wrote:Damn.

Re: Worthy of mention, too obscure for own thread
My 95 year old neighbor, who stooped as he was at an almost 90 degree angle never failed to make me feel lazy in comparison to the work and care he put into his house, lawn and landscaping. I caught him trying to crawl into his garage window last spring to access the garage door opener they had left in their car. I then hurt myself getting through the window for him. It was always a race to beat him to shoveling his driveway if my neighbor with a snow blower wasn't home. I would sometimes do his before mine. He had fallen a number of times recently, (I came home to find him stuck on his back on his front lawn a couple of weeks ago), but was still doing as he ever did.
His stubbornness in seeking assistance and insistence on doing everything himself may have finally caught up with him, as he fell down the stairs last Sunday (11/2) attempting to go up to bed. He broke his neck in the fall and died the next day. Peace, Mr F.

Bobby Keys. I learned that solo in high school (tenor sax is one of the several instruments that I play really badly.)

And a Canadian legend as well. Front page news across the country. Not only did he captain the Habs to 10 Stanley Cup wins, but he oozed class.wlu_lax6 wrote:Jean Béliveau Canadiens Legend

So beloved was he - and by all Canadians, including both seperatists and federalists in Quebec - that he was offered the position of Governor General back in the 90's. A ceremonial position for sure, but the Governor General is Canada's official head of state. "The Queen's Representative" could have been a former hockey player. Inconceivable in any other country, and inconceivable if it were anyone but Beliveau. He turned down the offer, but still, shows the esteem that he was held in.
Won't be surprised if he is given a state funeral.
And I had the honour of meeting him when I was working at the CBC 25 years ago or so. Just a really nice guy who was trailed by grown men and women who looked like teenagers when they see their current heartthrob.

On the respect, class item
Cool thing I read is when people met the great players, it would be "hi Gordie" or "hi Wayne", but for him it was always "Mr. Béliveau". He did not ask for that treatment, it was just how he was respected.

If you read Keith Richards' recent autobiography, he was Keef's party wingman and they had some wild times together. He played some memorable sax for the Stones. I saw Bobby Keys a few years ago, when he was in Joe Ely's band. That was a great show and Bobby Keys was part of the reason why.howard wrote:Bobby Keys.
