I caught part of the Athletico - Barca match today. Poorly ref'd from the part I watched. Athletico got a PK on a fould outside the box, but then had a handball in the box not called that quickly went against the run of play for a goal by Barcelona. And of course, follow this link and ask how did this not get a card.

Knopfler's soundtrack is lovely. He was born in Glasgow, so this is his kind of project. This movie led me to look into Knopler's latest doings, as reflected towards the bottom this thread:

Yeah, I noticed that (hence the Knopfler comment) but I wasn't sure which direction you went (from Knopfler to movie or movie to Knopfler).

In recent years Knopfler has been slowly growing on me as he shows up in places I don't expect a Scottish pop hit-making superstar from the '80s to be. Like his duet project with Emmylou Harris. I don't usually think much of soundtracks except when they annoy me -- which is more often these days. But I found myself liking this one. Then the credits said it was Knopfler, and I was surprised again. This is a 15 year-old movie, so it's a surprise that took a long time to arrive.

Is there anyone else with a career path like Knopfler's?

Maybe Ry Cooder, if you don't count the wild million-album selling success part of Knopfler's career.

I immediately thought of Cooder because of the soundtracks and the move from more rock oriented to traditional music. But in addition to the big miss on the hit-making money-for-nothing-and-chicks-for-free thing, Cooder dove deep into ethno-musicology. I don't know of Knopfler doing anything like this. And Cooder has blown it big time by not doing duets with Emmylou.

Real Madrid's Harry Kane? He just keeps upping the transfer fee Spurs can blow on the next Soldado et al. He is so much like Bale. Just ridiculously quick and has a ton of smarts to be in the right place. The wicked shot and ability to make space for himself cutting inside doesn't hurt either. And only 21 years old. He just really needs to learn to stay onsides. At least 4 times he was off in situations that it should have been really easy to hold the line. Several cost him clear scoring chances. That should be something really easy to learn, and if he does, watch out.

ETA: Despite the outcome, that was one of the most exciting games I have seen this year. Frenetic pace from start to finish, but it remained clean. A couple of poor challenges and a number of yellow cards, but nothing malicious or cynical (sorry, I love that term). Giroud's assist is the Shass of the century.

This one they don't sell.

And it was a fantastic game, so good that even Erik Lamela looked like the fourth best midfielder on Spurs - which for him is a massive improvement.

There's a lot to like in this article by Barney Ronay about Man U's troubles.

He calls Rooney the Croxton Cruyff, and mocks Falcao. The article leads to the question, what is Man U's best XI?

I have no clue.

I'll take a shot. Here's how I would line them up, assuming all are healthy:

De Gea

Rafael Carrick Rojo Shaw

Blind

Adnan Herrera Di Maria

Rooney

RVP

For me, that gives the team the best balance. Carrick has been ManU's best CB this year and with his ability on the ball, can start attacks from the back like LVG wants. Herrera and Rooney in the middle can switch positions easily and both get forward to support attacks. Blind is a no-brainer in the holding role right in front of the back four. And Adnan and ADM are great at starting centrally and then moving wide when necessary, which wouldn't be often since United will get their width from Rafa and Shaw, just like in the SAF days.

I'd love to see this lineup just to see if it unleashes ADM like earlier in the season and if Herrera and Rooney can play together in the middle.

My issues with your lineup are as follows:
Is RVP still better than James Wilson? Probably, but who knows.
No Mata? Probably the right call, but he seems like such a useful player and in the wrong system. The same can be said for his time at Chelsea, so perhaps he's the problem, not the system.
I also like a great deal of what Fellaini has offered this season, but he's probably best as a tall sub to aim at when the team is down and needs to hoof the long balls up to try and nick a point.

LvG has got to get Rooney further forward, and DiMaria on the wing in my opinion.

RVP is better than Wilson. Miles better. The only thing Wilson has that RVP doesn't is pace. I doubt that Wilson would have been able to score the goal RVP did against Leicester City. Plus, I don't think Wilson can play as a lone striker, which is what I'd like to see at this point.

Mata is a tough call but I think you could rotate him and RVP actually. When RVP is out, if LVG wanted, he could play Falcao or he could play Mata and then move Rooney up top. I like Mata but he's not a counter attack player and that's what United have been for a long time.

Fellaini is that change of pace guy. You put him on to get a goal or you start him against certain teams and play him next to Blind. He's not a guy that should start regularly if all others are fit.

Kane is not going to Real Madrid this summer. He's only done this for about 18 games. Let's see how he finishes and how next season goes before we have him playing with the greatest attacking talent on the planet.

I'd trust their inexperience over the other options. Evans, Smalling and Jones are a nightmare. I'd keep Jones, sign another center back and sell Evans and Smalling. They'll both go for a good amount and since Evans was a youth teamer, he'll bring in a great profit. And Smalling is 23 or 24 so someone will bid good money for him as well. Their sales would finance a Hummels or Hoewedes. Someone has to go if LVG is going to bring in a CB in the summer.

Big game in the Championship today as the two top teams in the table go at it -- Bournemouth and Derby. Winner would have a more solid grip on an automatic promotion spot. Loser probably moves into 3rd place since Middlesborough has an automatic win at Blackpool.

With his two goals today, Smalling is one behind Falcao. I think that's all you need to know on whether Falcao will be at United next year.

What a fucking awful half of soccer. I didn't think it could get worse than the 1st half against West Ham. But his is way worse. How they are ahead is down to pure luck.
