Mayweather-Pacquiao eclipses 4.4 million PPV buys, $72M gate
Previous record ppv was 2.48 million buys for floyd/oscar in 2008.

Re: The Sweet Science
Unreal numbers.
The craziest of all is that the live gate was $72 million. And that arena seats (I think) 16,000 which means that the average ticket was $4,500.
I love boxing, but there are a lot of things I'd rather do in Vegas with $4,500.

This Monroe guy that Triple G is fighting has a lot of heart. I'm shocked he made it through the second round. I'm guessing Triple G knocks him out in the fifth or sixth though.

Re: The Sweet Science
Tough to watch. Ref should've bailed him out and stopped it. Smart decision by Monroe, takes zero away from his courage and heart.
ETA: in the post-fight, I keep expecting GGG to say, "we are, two wild and crazy guys!"

Yeah, I was glad to see he stopped. No way anyone could hold that against him. As soon as he took one more shot he was going down for good. Ref should have just made the call on the 10 count and ended it. ETA: Though I get he's trying to not get criticized as well.howard wrote:Tough to watch. Ref should've bailed him out and stopped it. I know those were championship fights last night but it had a real "Friday Night Fights" vibe.
That first fight especially. I realize that this is due to the brilliance of both of the champs, but crazy how HBO had to end the broadcast with an hour left - there was just nothing left to show.

Must be getting old - I completely forgot that Leonard and Duran fought after the infamous "No Mas" bout.
http://boxrec.com/media/index.php?title=Fight:3939
9 years later and Duran made $7.5 million. And lost every round.

While boxers are fed up with being the property of faceless suits, they will follow the money. And the money is with Haymon, whose fighters become PBC champions without the encumbrance of sanction fees to any of the four main world governing bodies. After beating Manny Pacquiao in May, Mayweather declined to pay the $200,000 sanction fee demanded by the WBO for their title, and handed them back their trinket.

I'm just trying to figure out how to pronounce Rigondeaux.
Canelo should win with ease, the man lost to Austin Trout, ffs. But I'm done picking against Cotto. The way he destroyed Martinez was impressive and showed he has plenty left in the tank. Master trainer Freddie Roach is now in Cotto's corner. And I just love Cotto; I've seen more of his fights in person than any other fighter, and I covered a bunch of them.
How'd you like that Vargas knockout?

Those scores were an atrocity.
Close fight, and can't really complain that Alvarez won (I had it 115-114 Cotto), but 119-109?

Goodbye and good riddance to Wladimir Klitschko.
Laughable that he is considered by anyone to be a top ten heavyweight of all time. Statistics be damned, that performance tonight was just a lower energy version of how he's defeated a long line of tomato cans.

I wish he had faced someone bigger and stronger than him earlier, so he would've been exposed earlier. There is no one that he ducked, just lucky he had no serious opponents during his ten years on top.
Boy, this guy DeGale who is gonna fight Bute now sure talks a lot of shit. Hope father time hasn't grabbed Lucien yet, and he can shut this guy up.

I took a disliking to Tyson Fury when watching the British boxing on Fight TV a few years ago. Mouth like Ali... if Ali was an idiot.
Well, looks like I'm not the only one who doesn't like this guy:

Re: The Sweet Science
So the guys from Slate's Hang Up and Listen did a segment on the "radio fights" from Murry Woroner. These were computer simulated fight tournaments done in the 60s and then broadcast on the radio as real fights. They then did a movie of Marciano v. Ali. The radio call was great on the samples they covered.

This could go a few different places, but earlier today a few gunmen with assault rifles opened fire at a boxing weigh-in in Dublin. Looks like it was a targeted killing rather than terrorism from the circumstances (shooters sounded Irish, targeted a few people specifically and left bystanders alone).

Ward fought well and came back in the middle rounds, but Kovalev got burned on the decision. I had it as 115-112.
