Re: Proud Parental Unit Crowing Thread
The youngest had his first night of spring soccer yesterday. His actual age group would be U5, but we put him in U6 so he could be with his friends from school. He is small. Only weighs 35lbs right now. And he's short. The ball came up to his knee when he started playing and now it's only slightly lower. He played in two previous seasons and was an average level of player.
So last night... He scored 8 goals in a quick 10 minute scrimmage. They were the only goals for either team. His team also had 2 players. The other had 4. It was mostly aggression, being the younger brother and catching up a bit in size. The coach called him a beast. He was beyond excited on the way home.

Re: Proud Parental Unit Crowing Thread
That's awesome. I wish my kids had that aggression. I'm not sure my two boys combined have scored 8 goals in their soccer careers.
Totally Kafkaesque
Re: Proud Parental Unit Crowing Thread
Yeah. Good stuff, testuser. My daughter played AYSO for eight years and was a solid mid-level team player. Scored exactly two goals in her career. She's a great kid with lots going for her, but we recognized early on that an athletic scholarship was not going to be in the cards for us. (Probably what my parents said about me, too...)Shirley wrote:That's awesome. I wish my kids had that aggression. I'm not sure my two boys combined have scored 8 goals in their soccer careers.

Is this the thread for posting youth sports stuff even if your kids haven't done anything yet?
They just posted the teams for all the Cal Ripken league levels here so I'm enjoying my 2nd annual look at all the rosters to find the weirdest names/kids I'm glad aren't on Cameron's team. A lot of kids have nicknames listed - you could specify one during registration - so that it looks like Cameron (Cam) Friedman or Joseph (Joe) Bleau.
Well there's someone on the goddamn AAA Rangers named Devyn and then it says (D-dog).

Excuse the tangent, but that reminds me of a story... when I was in college, there was a guy on our dorm floor who tried to give himself what he thought was a cool nickname. He was a pilot, and tried to get people to adopt the nickname of "Wings" for him. One day, a guy misunderstood him and innocently (and incredulously) replied to him, "did you say, 'Weiner?'. So, guess what his nickname actually became...howard wrote:Another sign of the cultural apocalypse - kids giving themselves their own nicknames.

Re: Proud Parental Unit Crowing Thread
Coached my daughters first t-ball game last week. By coach, it is mostly standing in the infield yelling the name of every kid not paying attention as the other team is about to hit. In the beginning of the season, the kids pretty much form a wall across the pitchers mound half way to 1st and 3rd. We just have them throw to first after getting the ball, regardless of where the play is or if the runner reached first 2 minutes prior. The key is going to be getting the kids to stop piling on each other to get to weak grounders, and get them to move away from the player who gets the ball so they can throw it to first. We have one chubby kid who is the biggest culprit of diving on the pile. One play, he fought through the pile and came up with the ball. He held it over his head with a huge grin, turning to show the ball to the entire crown, with all the coaches, teammates and parents yelling at him to throw it. I wouldn't be surprised if that ends up being the highlight of the kids sports career.
Now for the crowing. My daughter was one of the 2 bright spots on the team. She had 4 hard balls hit to her, and she fielded all 4 cleanly and made quick throws to first. She is intense on the field, totally locked in, and was pissed when the game was called.

My daughter pops into my room this morning after waking up. Leans 2 inches from my face and says, "Hey dad, Can I skip tennis lessons today and you take me to the Hopkins lacrosse game." She was perfect wingman on a perfect day at Navy Marine Corp stadium. I am doing something right with this parenting thing.

BabyBank has a sweet swing. Need to work on the footwork and weight transfer but the swing is on point.
Told him playing on a baseball team is a right but actually playing is a privilege. Told him when the coach calls his name to play a position, every inning (it's instructional ball - 7 yr olds), to run out to his position. Be proud that you get to play. It works. On and off the field. Always be hustling. Gritty some may say.

This weekend was college graduation for my GF's daughter. So my girls and I were there to help with the celebration and whatnot.
The daughter, and her roomies, had a big BBQ party Saturday night for all their families. They set up the beer pong table, and....turns out my 11 year girl is a natural.
I'm not sure what's more disturbing...how good she wa at it, or how proud I was....

AEM is part of a running club with other girls in her first grade class. On Saturday we did a two-mile run before an outdoor fair. 26 and change, and what really impresses me is her not giving up when we were going up the hills. I never ran 2 miles until I was in my 20s.

Re: Proud Parental Unit Crowing Thread
My 16 year old daughter's house league team opened the season with a tie and then lost 9 straight games (7 of them by a single goal). They then tied the second place team before ending the season with a win and a tie.
Today was the playoffs and they just beat the third place and first place team in shootouts. In the first shootout, they won after three kicks sparing my daughter the stress of shooting.
She scored in the second game shootout and looked like she was going to float off the field.
Fathers day at the finals tomorrow!

We too sent our oldest daughter to a school run by witches. It's provided her a firm grounding in the satanic fundamentals. Upside: it's hard to be consistently disrespectful after you've spend a day turned into a ground squirrel. Downside: We had to tell her no sacrificial offerings left in the kitchen.Jerloma wrote:My godless, valueless, purposeless, no-objective-guide-for-morality-having demon-spawn was voted most respectful student in her 7th grade class by the teachers.

Lost on a 1st half penalty. Keeper went out for a loose ball, missed it and undercut the striker - worst injury I've seen in 8 years of this league. Guaranteed separated shoulder. Poor kid.degenerasian wrote:Anything can happen when you get to the knockout stages!

Re: Proud Parental Unit Crowing Thread
So Hopkins has this program called Center for Talented Youth (http://cty.jhu.edu/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;). JHU puts on a number of programs for kids who qualify. My son was interested in a few of their summer camps (nerd camps). So we signed him up for the qualification test so this could be an option next summer (super interested in history and writing workshop). Told him to just do his best, but could care less how he did, no pressure. Got the results back today. 97 percentile in verbal, 95th in math compared to all 5th graders who have taken the test (He starts 3rd grade in 3 weeks). Apparent his scores qualified him for some award banquet in the spring. For all I know this could be some money making scheme by JHU and every kid gets a high score...but still makes you feel good. Especially since my boy has not found his groove in team sports or martial arts.
