I don't typically care for pop songs but every once in a while one comes along and catches one's attention. And with this one, for me, it is the 70's Disco era rhythm guitar which completely carries the song. And if you happen to be a guitar player, face it, that chord progression is just plain fun to play. And, hey, Daft Punk caught a good groove on this one.

Those kinds of things fascinate me. People want to fit in so bad they will pretty much say anything with no regard. And I guarantee if you called any of them out on it, they would try to explain it away as "I was really high, man" or "I thought she said Gotye"

Shortly after I posted that great Iggy Pop story, I created an Iggy Pop-based station in Pandora. I've been listening to it for a couple of weeks and it's awesome. A lot of Iggy and the Stooges of course, but also quite a bit of old Bowie, the Velvet Underground and other old punk and garage bands. It sometimes meanders forward in time to play the Pixies or Nirvana.

Two observations about the George Jones Pandora radio station :

1. There's a lot of crappy country music. Just really lame, sappy, tinkly-piano kind of ballad crap. Luckily a few downvotes of Alan Jackson and the like have made it much better.

2. Of the remaining stuff, about one in four songs name checks Hank Williams. It's uncanny, really.

A lot of my favorite bands of the past few years have released/will release a new album this year. Just today, Superchunk announced a new album and tour. So far, I'm a fan of the new Strokes record. It's got an 80's arcade vibe to it, with a lot more falsetto than their earlier records (Albert Hammond Jr., I presume?). I also really like the new Vampire Weekend. "Step" is a great track, and the drums and organ at the beginning of "Don't Lie" immediately gives me stinky cheese face, and a head nod to go along with the beat.

I've liked what I've heard from the new National record as well.

Oh, not an old band, but my kid is addicted to Bat for Lashes', "Laura".

Rush, Who is that sound cloud you posted? I like this so-called progressive funk.

Cheddah, I tried getting into the National, but all of their songs sound the same to me. I like their song, but it all jut bleeds together for me. I think it would take a bunch of times through a couple albums to learn to differentiate, but it hasn't grabbed me enough yet. It still remains on the ipod, so I will eventually give it a fair shake.

Bapo! converted me into a full blown Animal Collective fan. I can't get their bizarre brand of whatever-the-fuck it is out of my head. And that is the last music to get stuck in your head. I love it, though. It certainly isn't easy listening at first, but man is it some brilliant stuff. The crazy thing it, my daughter loves them! First time she has ever asked for the name of a band while listening to tunes. And she keeps asking for me to play them. Again, this ain't easy listening music, so I am really proud of her for this. And this was all before she knew a band member goes by the name Panda Bear.

I can see Anacortes from my backyard! Well, not really. But it is only about 20 miles as the crow flies across the Strait of Juan de Fuca. And these guys are the pride of Anacortes. That is unless you're heavily in to Burl Ives. Big time weed town, Anacortes.

AussieDave, you familiar with The Lonely Forest? I keep hoping they'll come play here some day; it's the closest major city to them, after all. But they just don't perform very often.

This one is kind of fun. Well, in an odd way. Shera di kaum Punjabi means "Punjabi are like lions" so, as in a sporting event, it's a battle cry or prideful sort of boasting. This is Ludacris, Akshay Kumar, and RDB. Akshay Kumar is a Bollywood actor, an East Indian Kung Fu type. And his wife's name is Twinkle, so there. RDB are three Sikh brothers from the UK. Ludacris you probably know. Put all that together and you get rap with a bhangra beat, American urban braggadocio with a Punjabi chorus and refrain, all choreographed in a strange admixture of Hindi "Filmi" and MTV hip hop. The song plays over the closing credits of the film Breakaway (also known as Speedy Singhs); it's a fun film, family friendly, reminiscent of Bend It Like Beckham and that genre. The plot? Punjabi ice hockey team in Toronto not taken seriously, become serious, get good at hockey with help from Rob Lowe, protagonist falls in love, everybody dances! It's a feel good flick. Hey, I enjoyed it. The entire film is on YouTubia right HERE.

Probably a good workout tune.

I own 2 of his albums. They are fantastic. I put his pickin' on par with anyone not named Fleck. A couple silly songs, but for the most part, serious bluegrass of the highest quality.

ETA: This song is from one of the albums I own. It qualifies as a goofy song. Steve can't sing, so most of the singing is done by other, much more qualified singers. It's good stuff.

Whatever you do, don't choose the newest National album as your first foray into their catalogue if this is how you already feel about them. Start with Alligator, then Boxer, then High Violet. By then you may like them enough to appreciate that Trouble Will Find Me is good, even though there isn't one rocker on the whole record.
