Nice. That's quality family time.

Also, it is hard not be a little excited for the new ones - I trust Abrams and the 1-3 were so disappointing the bar is set wonderfully low. Helps.
A lot of people seem to be shitting on his Star Trek reboots and I have enjoyed those. I'm legit excited for what is to come. Come to think of it, I've enjoyed almost everything Abrams has put his hands on.
I've enjoyed Abrams' stuff, too, but I stand by this from last November:
rass (from the Movies thread) wrote:I thought Abrams knocked the first Star Trek out of the park. I thought the second was WAY too fan service-y (going Khan was bad enough, but reversing the Spock/Kirk dynamic from ST:tWoK, right down to the dialogue, was, well, WAY too fan service-y). That could be a bad tendency to have in the SW universe.
Obviously, I love what we've seen so far, but Abrams really seems to excel at this part of the release cycle. I really hope it's great.

I actually liked the original three and I imagine these next three will probably be decent to very solid especially if George Lucas has as little as possible to do with them, I just don't wanna hear about it any more, especially since the movie is still two months away. It's a valid opinion. I don't think that's exactly trolling.

(Is there an "I Hate Star Wars" thread? See if we had one of those I'd agree it would make more sense there probably.)

See but I don't hate Star Wars, that's what I'm trying to say. So making that thread wouldn't make sense.

Honestly if there was this kind of hype for a movie I REALLY, REALLY wanted to see like a new Wes Anderson joint or something I'd probably be equally as tired of it.

This perfectly nails how I felt about the two Abrams ST movies.

Based on everything we've seen so far, though, I can't fathom this new movie not being good. I know the obvious comeback to that is "Remember Episode I?" but in that case, everyone somehow managed to neglect the possibility that a guy who had spent the last couple decades isolated in a criticism-free bubble might not be able to replicate his past work. The cynicism and pessimism left over from the prequels were so pervasive that it's really remarkable that the new one has been able to create such a positive buzz. It's a thinly-veiled love letter to the original trilogy and an apology for the prequels. Sure, that's fan service-y, but it's the best possible kind.

The sets and scenery seem to be more awesome and restrained (compared to 1-3) at the same time. This give me hope.

Eh, that comment wasn't really aimed at you Brian - just a more general thought based on someone else.

I mean, I just don't go in the old guy music thread, because I don't want to fuck with anyone's enjoyment. Just sayin'.

He is. There's a video around where it's JJ and Hamill talking and Hamill is pitching a story where Luke goes darkside and it sounds awesome. Can't wait to see this a few weeks after everyone else.

That was some show back in the 90s or something. I don't put a lot of stock into it. It's a nice diversion for the filmmakers though.

Luke is the Yoda of this trilogy.

I pay more attention than I should to all the rumors and purported leaks, and without spoiling too much, the overwhelming preponderance of evidence is that the "Luke is the bad guy" theory is not the case. AB's assessment is much more likely the correct one.

That was a 2005 inside the actor's studio dealie. Whether Luke is the new bad or not , that exchange isn't telling.

one of the best star wars comic stories was Dark Empire and Dark Empire II where luke went evil and then came back. i was hoping for something like that; something really out there with regards to luke. oh well.

I said it earlier in the thread, but the new young actors look like they're going to be great, especially compared to the prequels. Rey's look of terror when Kylo puts the saber to her face is amazing.

I'll stop short of spoiling anything explicitly, but this along with the U.S. trailer is lining up pretty well with a lot of the rumors that have been circulating in the last year...

The movie comes out on Wednesday night at midnight over here. Not sure why. But I'm going. And I'll just deal with whatever at work the next day.

I'll also be wearing the Jedi robe I bought from Amazon some time ago. It'll be fun.

"Turkey Shoots Down Russian Military Jet" is a lot less disturbing like that.

edit: it was not a fighter jet, but a ground attack plane, not capable of a dogfight with the Turkish fighter planes.

OK, I think I'm going into Star Wars media blackout mode. Apparently a somewhat spoiler-y new international trailer is out, and reviews will probably start coming out soon, so I'm done. See you in this thread in 7 or 8 days.

No spoilers - but the review blackout is over and initially at 97% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. Which, of course, is pretty awesome news to a geek like me. And one of the few less positive reviews is from Salon - which gives me confidence - as Salon is, per usual, full of negative pop culture scolds.

Saturday at 12:50 is my showtime. Very much looking forward to it.
