I was reading an article discussing the issue of players entering the transfer portal and leaving their team before they can play bowl or playoff games, and this comment tickled me:
Defector Funbag commenter wrote:…we're literally a season away from a team like Ole Miss or Texas making the CFP and simply buying out their opponents' best players at the beginning of December to avoid facing them at the end of December.

Cal quarterback Fernando Mendoza entered the transfer portal a week ago, so they are playing tonight's bowl game with a backup quarterback who barely played this season. I certainly hope he gave the team an indication a bit longer ago, so this new qb might have gotten a bit of practice time!

The Transfer portal has been hell on bowl games. There will be a culling. And a 32 team playoff to compensate.

Last year, Syracuse fired their coach and had portal churn under the interim, then got annihilated in their bowl by USF. This year, their bowl is against Washington State, who lost their coach and QB to the portal. The line has jumped from SYR -4.5 to -14.

Comes and goes around, so it's just bad timing when it happens to your team. Nothing will change until TV ratings for the small bowls bottom out and they don't rate high enough to bottom out. They are a TV product, many of which are owned and operated by ESPN, and nothing more.

Isnt this what most bowl games have been for many years now. The kickoff to the next season with practice leading into spring and identifying fall starters. They can get fucked with that 32 team playoff. Its bad enough already. Even if they were to end conference championship games you still need the bye and more than 16 sucks

There have been the odd big names sit out (McCaffrey?) but I think for the most part the teams play. Coaches love the extra practice, I get that, but there's no money in WKU and JMU playing for anyone in the grand scheme. Some swag for the schools. Some repetitions for the L-level broadcast team. Sorry Duke's Mayo isn't getting to slap their name on a stadium for a couple of weeks so some execs can go to fucking Charlotte to escape their families.

Right theyre all useless mostly and its been that way for a decade or more. Its the first "goal" of the 2025 season. So whats the problem with getting on with it and using backups and guys that will be with the program next year. Doesnt bother me to not see the same team out there cause it sucks anyway and you get to see glimpses of the new team. Can we find a way to let portal guys practice and play with their new teams?

Would think so also... but some of these kids stop playing after 4 games to preserve eligibility... think they can come back for bowls. id let those guys move on and play in bowls with their new teams

to my knowledge, there is not a single player in the history of college football who has played for two schools in the same season

(setting aside the myriad obvious enrollment and logistical issues this scenario would present)

Well it's not the same season. This is the beginning of the 25 season. And semester is over. Arent some/many of these kids done done at their old schools and enrolling at their new ones? Any post season non playoff games need to be entirely revamped and might as well consider portal realities. Play em all in January weekdays between semis and finals. Guess the execs don't get to hole up with their clients at the Adams mark

I don't understand why the FCS playoffs suck. The bracket set-up is how just about every other team sport crowns a champ in all levels of the NCAA. (hockey is notable different... and it's a dumb system, to be clear.)

I don't think they suck. Have always paid a little attention since my mom's alma mater EKU used to be a pretty major national player at that level. That said I don't go out of my way to find and watch them. But they also just play 10 game regular seasons, right?

because you dont need a huge playoff tournament in pretty much any sport. let the regular season determine the handful of participants. play in championship games if you really want to expand the field. It seems normal because these guys are all greedy and dont care about the product but basically 5% should be in a playoff not 20%

I've got no problem with saying that Indiana benefitted from down years by both Michigan and Washington and the general meh-ness of the Big Ten outside of the top three teams. but the second-guessing today saying that Miami/Alabama/Ole Miss/South Carolina should have been in instead of Indiana is useless drivel

The hot take factory will be working all three shifts where the CFB is concerned for awhile.

I think it’s pretty safe to say we could all live the rest of our lives without seeing a 1-loss SEC or Big Ten team left out of the playoff even if it stays at 12 forever. It’s just not going to happen.

It’s OK to say Indiana (and SMU) were/are overrated. It’s not reasonable to suggest that Indiana (especially) hadn’t earned their way into the playoff. (To be clear not saying you were NLFC).

If Michigan or Ohio State with the exact same schedule and resume had gone 11-1 (which isn’t unlikely in some future season) they make the playoff 1,000 times out of 1,000.
