As it turns out, both matchups conjure up memories of the worst playoff game in NFL history.

The four cornerbacks in that game: Lem Barney, Dick LeBeau; Mel Renfro and Herb Adderley. All four in Canton. No wonder D dominated.

To my regret, I remember this well. It was a Herman Weaver punt fest.

Oh God - that is just awful. Craig Morton was the winning QB - 4/18 for 38 yards and a pickoff.

And it always happens this year - I end up betting for the sake of betting. $50 on the Cardinals +6.5. If it was in my confidence pool, I may have picked them at the 3 slot...

That's why we bet on them - to make them exciting.

Don't tell me about injuries - Cam Newton is one of the most over rated players I have ever seen.

Yeah he's really inconsistent at best. Once he loses a step running the ball (inevitable as he gets older) he's going to be useless

By the way that replay was a perfect example of why the NFL should (at a minimum) mandate there's a fixed camera on both goallines.

Carolina can win this game without Newton throwing another pass (and without their returner being an idiot and without the defense being called for a few more stupid penalties).

No one rates Cutler highly. Yet you always hear about Newton - and then you see him play...

I bet on the Cards (and may still lose), but I based it on the dreck that Carolina's 4 game winning streak was built on. New Orleans, Tampa, Cleveland and Atlanta. Fooey!

Arizona is playing a cadaver at QB. Why would Carolina punt from the ARI 38 on 4th & 4?

You're not guaranteed to pin them. Could have been a 18 yard net. They got lucky.

Also the officiating in this game sucks. Expect nothing less from Hochuli.

How is Cam Newton overrated? Who is he being rated over? And by whom?

Laws to protect referees from being referees. Basically a defender must get to a QB before his arm goes forward (empty hand) to cause a fumble otherwise it's incomplete. No grey area.

I hope he has a 30 rating in Madden next year.

Assume (and I hope I'm wrong but assume) Dallas wins tomorrow. Seattle might be a -13/14 favorite over Carolina. And I'd have a hard time taking the points.

hmmm Seahawks offense struggled at times this year and those Panther linebackers are really good.

I'll gladly bet about any amount of money on Seattle less than 2 TDs vs this Carolina team. Their LBs are good. But that's about it.

I hope Lindley saved whatever he's made to this point. He's not going to throw another regular-season pass in the NFL ever again.

Time to remove "one of" from that sentence. And switch "games" to singular. Might want to remove the word "playoff" too.

Yeah I tend to agree. Can Carolina run the ball would be another question. I don't know if Seattle could cover 14 but I would not be at all comfortable watching Carolina survive and my money on the line.

In a scheduling quirk Seattle has played in Carolina each of the last 3 season and all their games were something like 13-9. Of course being in Seattle this time is a huge difference.

This is the nature of the beast. If we saw every other team's backup QBs play against play-off quality teams, there would be blood running in the streets. To make the games interesting they'd have to require defenses to play with 10 on the field, and give the offenses 5 downs.

That might not be enough. Perhaps blitzing would have to be outlawed. And cornerbacks would have to run with potato sacks tied around their feet, like in a sack race. That might do it.

Jay Kornegay (who runs the Westgate (formerly LVH) sports book) told one of my buddies here who works for the sports talk radio station that the opening lines would likely be around Seattle -11 vs. Carolina or GB -8 vs. Carolina. I'm going to be hitting refresh on my sports betting app repeatedly tomorrow after the Lions game to bet my mortgage against the Panthers regardless of which it is. I think they'll get destroyed against a quality team. That did not look like a team that should have won a playoff game today, Ryan Lindley as the opposing QB or not.
