Breweriana and vintage beer ads
I have a thing for those old painted magazine ads. Some of them are striking...
some have gusto...
and some, um, hearken back to another time.
I also have a thing for vintage glassware and bottle openers. I posted some photos of my collection in the beer thread a couple of years ago, and it's a topic that comes up from time to time, but I've always wanted to start a breakaway thread. (I guess that would make this thread the Swamp's Transnistria.)
I'm not going to get into that tonight, but I'll use this space as a placeholder for future tomfoolery. In the meantime, if you find any great ads or want to share your breweriana, put 'em on the glass, Swamp.

Re: Breweriana and vintage beer ads
I see a lot of beer ads/promotion stuff when I go to antique shops, and it's astounding how much some of it costs. There's a shop in Willoughby (eastern suburb of Cleveland) that has a long wall of nothing but beer signs. The last time I was there, they had an illuminated sign for Schoenling Brewing Company, which was a Cincinnati brewery until it merged with Hudepohl in the 1980s. What was cool was the sign showed an aerial view of the Cincinnati riverfront, and it was distinctly missing Riverfront Stadium. That place opened in 1970, and I imagine it took a year or two to build, so the sign was close to 50 years old. The only reason I didn't buy it was because it cost $250.
Beer pulls are becoming quite the collectors item too, but again, it's kind of silly how much they cost. Pulls for common beers like Bud and Miller Lite will still run in the $20-$30 range. If you can find an obscure brewery or beer, the price can be three to four times that cost.

Those top two are photos, right?
Hold on, I'm trying to see if Jack London ever gets this fire built or not.

I know it's effective advertising when it makes want a Budweiser.

This thread sent me into a rabbit hole looking at images. Here are a couple favorites:

Totally Kafkaesque
Re: Breweriana and vintage beer ads
Interesting topic.
I was at a pub in Halifax and saw a vintage Kilkenny beer sign with a redhead lying on a white carpet and it's maybe the most gorgeous woman I've ever seen in an advertisement. It's probably (the sign) about 30-40 years old now and I've not even ever been able to find a picture of the sign on the Internet, much less try to find if there would be any for sale. (I've looked).

Au contraire mon frère. Blatz had a whole series of these ads. Here is just a sampling of what else I found.Shirley wrote:I think the artist only knew how to draw one dude.

'I lived in Milwaukee. I ought to know.' I love that. I'm going to start using that as a qualifier for all of my arguments. 'I drove thru South Carolina once, so I ought to know...'
Is this the poster you were looking for, Brian?
I enjoy playing Internet Detective, so I'm going to look for your poster tonight.

Oh good god no, though I didn't see that one in my internet sleuthing so maybe you'll get there. It's a VERY short-haired redhead laying on a white shag rug giving a very "come hither" look.

I love the Schlitz Gusto series.
We've been posting together for years now, and I suppose that some of us have become easy to parody. I don't care. I'm leaning in. I know who I am.mister d wrote:Not a single person here won't know who created this post just from the title.

A joke my mom told me that was evidently popular with her college classmates in the 50s..
Why shouldn't women drink beer at the beach?
They might get sand in their Schlitz.

Did you see that ludicrous display last night?

Re: Breweriana and vintage beer ads
That Budweiser/jazz ad is perfect. I've seen a lot of Budweiser ads from that era, and they're all pretty great. I'm surprised I had never seen that one before; it might be my favorite.
I'm striking out on our Kilkenny quest. Even the Russian sites are letting me down. I'm not giving up, tho.
Anyway, here's my favorite Kirin poster.

On a lark, I did an image search for 'Halifax bar,' and I found a bar in Halifax that features axe throwing. Alcohol and axes. I don't know what could go wrong. I would love to see a Pittsburgh bar feature this after a Steelers loss.

They have that in Toronto. Last year one of the documentaries produced by my students was a look at the axe/bar.bapo! wrote:On a lark, I did an image search for 'Halifax bar,' and I found a bar in Halifax that features axe throwing. Looked kinda fun as a one shot thing.
Nicely done doc.

Re: Breweriana and vintage beer ads
Okay, so, there's actually a chain in Canada, with 10 of these places spread out all over the place. One just opened in Chicago, and there's an indie axe-throwing club in Philly. Judging by the photos, tho, American axes are much smaller than Canadian axes.Pruitt wrote:They have that in Toronto.

There used to be nothing I liked more than getting drunk on Michelob and tossing some blades around. Now axe throwing is just so corporate. Money and popularity ruin everything.testuser2 wrote:Is this some kind of new fad? I'm going to https://urbanaxes.com/ next weekend in Philly. Just saw a making fun of Paul Ryan take on this. Had I seen this in HS I might have taken up smoking.

Re: Breweriana and vintage beer ads
I had a friend from High School who worked a liquor store for a while. His apartment was decorated in what I called 'early american alcoholism'. He had a hallway that was full done up with St Pauli girl posters.
And then his living room was covered with mirrors like these:
and neon beer signs. It was pretty amazing. I bet that stuff would be worth a lot these days.

This is fantastic.'early american alcoholism'
Fun to see this thread bumped. And funny to see references to axe-throwing bars. The last time I saw my family (almost two years now), I learned that my nephew was dating somebody who worked at one of those places.
Still searching for that damn Kilkenny sign, Brian. No luck. But the word 'Kilkenny' reminded me that I haven't listened to The Pogues in a while, so tonight has taken an unexpected turn. 'I looked at him. He looked at me. All I could do was hate him.'
Re: Breweriana and vintage beer ads
Ha, I still think about that ad from time to time. Usually when I'm in a bar and see a vintage ad. I've not given up hope myself yet. Thanks for keeping the flame alive (no redhead pun intended).bapo! wrote: ↑Sun Oct 24, 2021 6:07 pmThis is fantastic.'early american alcoholism'
